After the movie Sex in the City 2 came out, I thought this show had finally jumped the shark - never to be heard from again. How wrong I was. Along with Seinfeld and Friends, bloody Sex and the City has became a cable TV favourite.

There is a general understanding in the female community that it's not cool to subject your boyfriend, or any guy for that matter, to trashy shows like Bold and the Beautiful. Yet, for some reason (I gather because the subject matter is sex) women appear to have universally decided that it's acceptable to pressure men into watching Sex and the City with them.

At least men have the good decency to watch their pr0n in private. Yet with women, it seems to be a public affair. We all have to sit around and have a discussion about Carrie and who she's boning today.

It's gotten to the point that my girlfriend got pissed with me because I stuck to my guns and watched Family Guy instead of Sex and the City.

What does the rest of GD think of this show? Is it a good tool to bring up the topic of sex with a cute girl for you? Or is it a form of torture inflicted on you by your girlfriend and other female acquaintances?

hate it....but i can see why chicks like it.... dont know one that doesnt like it

not the worst show ever made....THE OC takes that prize easily

Hate it

Girlfriend always puts it on when there is nothing on i just grab the remote and turn it over i get a mouthful but i dont care im not watching Samantha Jones try and suck every man and his dog off in Newyork

I sit through the Kardashians, Khloe and Lamar, even Friends but im not sitting through that crap

Must say though shes pretty good she doesnt force me to watch she is fine when i just get up and leave the room any guy who gets forced to watch this shit is a coward

I didn't mind the show to be honest. Probably went on a season too long though, and the movies were overkill (particularly the second one, which made no sense considering the "perfect" fairytale ending of the first).

The short-lived copycat shows that followed - Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle - were just pathetic.

If there was an equivalent show but from a male perspective instead of female, it would get banned for being sexist.

You could say a show like Californication bears strong similarities, while being skewed towards a male perspective. Manchild was decent as a male-oriented show too (a US version was made, but the Showtime network decided to go with Californication instead).

It's a great show, some really good eps over the years, especially the finale. The way it ended with Carrie leaving the Russian and getting back with Big and then we find out his name when caller ID comes up on the phone was fantastic. Loved Carrie's last monologue

“Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous.”

The movies were complete crap  God help us if we get a third

Well as a girl I would only ever consider watching it if there's absolutely nothing else on. Not the worst show going around but I certainly have no interest in it. I did see however Sex and the City 2 with a couple of mates and I have to say it was the most disgraceful disgusting pathetic movie I have ever seen. Even my mates who love the show thought it was crap.
It also took the piss out of muslims and I actually agree with them for once that it went too far, and I'm someone who thinks society is too politcally correct. If it was any other movie it would not have made it to cinemas.

Girlfriend adores it because of the high end fashion and glamour. The commentary on romance and dating that forms the plot is appalling and a thinly-veiled excuse for women to vicariously live the idealised Manhattan single woman lifestyle.

Whoever said it's the female version of Californication is probably pretty close to the mark. That or Entourage.

That's not really got anything to do with the point I was making, but okay.

I used to watch Entourage a few years ago. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons but after they got bogged down in the whole Medellin saga I gradually lost interest.
