Got very good mail that no football in SFNL and MSJFL this season, ' you' can wipe season off. Don't worry about lightening weekend competition or half seasons comps. AFL will look after itself. VFL comp "stuffed" and regional leagues may get reduced comp in to help regional areas.
"Take it to the Bank."

Strange they would release a statement about 50% reduction in cap if they had already ruled out the season proceeding
A lot of leagues in Victoria giving clubs hope at the moment. Maybe alerting them to a budget they will need for players payment IF some type of season gets going

OR

Cricket Victoria have told AFL Vic "you're dreaming" & they've had put a line through playing past September into cricket season

Well I'm sure the Renegades will enjoy playing at the Junction Oval. Just quietly, cricket does not want to take on the AFL. They may decide to start the AFLW & AFL season a lot earlier and suck what oxygen there is for cricket. How about a Boxing Day triple header at Marvel for the AFLW. Carlton-v-Collingwood & St.Kilda-v-Richmond, Melbourne-v-The Dogs free entry..
Then have a double header for the next day.. See how cricket enjoys that.

I've been told Cricket Victoria are preparing for a delayed start to their 2021 season, November start instead of October.

Its looking grim. The last article I read raised the possibility of playing with no supporters allowed. That is not viable for local footy.

Financially I think it could still work.
  1. Players subs + sponsorship is the clubs revenue.
  2. Remove player payments for 2020 (mercenaries won't like it but it is needed for footy to survive 2020)
  3. League to ensure the fees they charge the clubs are the absolute minimum to cover the necessities (footballs, umpire salary etc)
  4. League to reduce costs where possible inline with point 3.
  5. Defer any monies owing by clubs (pre-2020) to the league to be paid back in 2021 onwards.
  6. Div 1 & 2 to play a 9 games season (play each other once)
  7. Div 3 & 4 to play a 7 game season (play each other once)
  8. Finals to be reduced from final 5 to final 4, saves a week. If they want to go even further then make it 1 v 4, 2 v 3 with winners in the GF. Not keen but an option.

That way season could potentially run from July 4th until August 29th (9 weeks) with then finals to be Sep 5th to 19th (3 weeks). Div 3 & 4 could start finals earlier.

All of this depends largely on the government restrictions of course, but 9 weeks from now wouldn't be out of the question.

A large expense is umpires fees. If players are playing for nothing, umpires might have to share some pain. Also, you have severely underestimated how much is generated from home games. Sponsors are also far from guaranteed at the moment, spare cash is hard to find for businesses.

Yep umpires very much might need to take a haircut on the $$ just to get this season through.

I don't disagree, I know home games can generate a lot of money, I was the St Paul's treasurer for a few years.

I'm just saying that if we want to see some footy, as long as the subs and any sponsorship can match the league fees etc then we can press ahead without reliance on home crowd $$. At least if the clubs are told "you need to find a total of $40k for the 9 week season", they can work out what the gap is after subs are factored in.

And how would you stop people from coming in to watch. Half the clubs have no fences around them
With the current climate at Cricket Australia does anyone think they are going to give football a free kick by letting them play in October at any levels.
Face the facts no local football this year.

wont be their decision, will be made by the state sports minister.

Less than 2000 active cases in a population of 24 million people. Stop reading into the fear mongering. Cancelling all local sporting competitions is overkill at its finest

The touted return date for community football is 12 July. That is just under 3 months away. We have less than 120 active cases in a state of 6 million people. Daily new cases are in single figures and more people are recovering each day then being infected. For footy and other activity to start then present measures will have to be relaxed but surely current trends give cause for some optimism

The suggestion is not that spectators will be banned from local footy, just that some common-sense measures and mitigations will have to put in place.

Maybe we won’t see community footy this year. If we get another spike then that will probably be it but based on current tracking it is way too early to put a line through it just yet.

Which is the sole reason why local football will not proceed.

The league will not run a finals series without people coming through the turnstiles & paying their $12. Which club in their right might would forego $20K to host finals without a crowd

Clubs can't afford to operate without canteen/bar sales/functions either from patrons

May 11 is D Day, and if the rate of contraction continues at the current rate round 1 will be Saturday May 30, would give clubs a 2 week preseason to get themselves sorted and straight into it.

the elephant in the room is that the extended balmy summer/autumn means we have had very little cooler weather and the spread of the virus may have been kept away... what happens once we eventually do get a real wintry cold snap is anyone's guess.

Don't forget the government would have to ease public gathering restrictions to at least 200 people before anything goes ahead.

200 so your allowing around 75 supporters. Each team has around 25 once u count coaching staff runners etc need to allow 450+ to make it workable

Agree.
So it makes it even more less likely for footy to return. To go from a public gathering of a maximum of 2 to a gathering of 450+ within 3 months will be unlikely.
Anything less & if footy were to commence then it would financially ruin a lot of clubs
