Gabba, Brisbane
10am Friday October 10-Monday October 13

They do things differently in Queensland. Jimmy Maher dropped down the order last year for Shane Watson to open - at least that made some sense with Maher nearing the end - but it failed and Maher was opening in his last couple of games. After winning the wooden spoon they've decided to do it again this year, this time with Greg Moller dropping down the order for James Hopes. Moller did keep in a Twenty20 game last week but Hartley's got the gloves here. Aaron Nye misses out with Symonds in the side, while Clinton Perren hasn't found his way back and Lee Carseldine continues to be overlooked in the longest form of the game. Andy Bichel is another notable absentee, not ready to resume after missing all of last season, with Chris Swan getting a chance from the beginning alongside Noffke and new recruit Ryan Harris. Grant Sullivan and Daniel Doran remain in the picture and will seemingly fight it out for the last spot.

Tassie won the one dayers last year and the four dayers the year before, but their pre-season form hasn't been good, having lost all three one dayers in Queensland including one to the Redbacks, then beating them in a Twenty20 and an 80 over a side game, although two Redbacks batsmen passed 90 in that game, something that didn't happen in the whole season last year (nearly ;)). But then Michael Dighton made a ton, Travis Birt 80 and George Bailey 50 to chase down the 312. Rhett Lockyear and Michael Dighton are the surprise opening combination ahead of Dane Anderson and David Dawson who were there with DiVenuto in the late games last season. Gerard Denton returns to the Tassie side along with Ben Hilfenhaus who played in those two wins over the Redbacks as he returns from a back injury. Xavier Doherty probably won't play at the Gabba, with Tim Macdonald likely to join him on the sidelines so Denton doesn't have to bat at 9.

Re: Sheffield Shield Round 1: Queensland v Tasmania @ Brisbane (Fri-Sun)

I wondered why they forecast rain. Cricket on at the Gabba of course.

Opening with Hopes in 4 day cricket? What the **** are they thinking?

Just have to hope they play better than last year I suppose

Expect to see Divin and MacDonald to be dropped from the 13 when we name our final XI.

Dawson's poor form when given an opportunity last season explains him not being a game. About time we looked towards the future too, if Dawson can't turn it on now, he never will.

Re: Sheffield Shield Round 1: Queensland v Tasmania @ Brisbane (Fri-Sun)

Ive heard Dane Anderson is injured, which would explain Lockyear's inclusion

He must be, as he has shown far more promise than Lockyear and Dawson put together. Not sure if I like Dighton opening in the 4-day arena as he doesn't know how to play out a dour-type innings. Tassie are always vunerable when we are 1 or 2 down for nothing, so we need an opening pair who can say, we'll stick around til lunch, even if we only have 50 on the board. Big season ahead for Birt and Bailey, and will be interesting to see how Butterworth goes. I'm very excited about the season ahead.

Agree with you TFLUA-Tiger, Divin and MacDonald the two to be left out.

Re: Sheffield Shield Round 1: Queensland v Tasmania @ Brisbane (Fri-Sun)

Tasmania have won the toss and elected to bowl. Should be some assistance for the bowlers under overcast skies.

Probably be at least a couple of rain delays at some stage today too.

A good toss to win, as it will take a bit of pressure off our opening batting pair, and we can utilise our strength early in good bowling conditions (i'm imagining for the 1st game of the year at the GABBA)

Bowled 2nd ball.

These conditions will suit the Hilf. First delivery for 08/09 and he's cleaned up Hopes. Love it.

Also, where's Denton? Why is Tim MacDonald playing??

Great stuff by the Hilf, sounds like a pearler of a delivery- pitched on middle and took the top of off-stump.

Only just noticed MacDonald in ahead of Denton BCF. I've heard MacDonald has trained impressively in the pre-season, so maybe he has pushed ahead of Denton for selection. I hope this is the case, because if Denton is injured at that age then we may be the season without him or big Grif.

Geevesy picks up another one:
"Over 4.2: Geeves to Broad, no run, OUT, Broad half forward, pushing at the ball and finds the outside edge. Great ball again, moving away slightly and Tasmania on top. QLD 2/8"

:D

I hope so. Jury's still out on MacDonald though. I guess we'll see how he goes!

Geeva! :D

Typical Bulls start - they did the same in almost every game last year.

It's going to be a LONG season.

They may not make it to lunch.

Not sure what was more predictable - a Bulls top order collapse (yes I know conditions are perfect for bowling) or the CA scorecard crapping the bed 4 times already.

cricket.com.au saying QLD 4/13, only 3 down by my reckoning as Geevesy gets another one.

Over 6.2: Geeves to Love, no run, OUT, Love gone now as well, unbelievable! Back to defend, squared up as the ball moves off the pitch and finds an edge straight to Butterworth again at gully! QLD 4/13

A.Symonds - c:Butterworth b:Hilfenhaus 5 (9 balls, 7 minutes). FOW 3/13 (5.5), 3rd wicket partnership (Love/Symonds) of 5 runs (7 balls, 9 minutes). The new batsman is Greg Moller.

Over 5.5: Hilfenhaus to Symonds, no run, OUT, Symonds gone now, driving hard at a ball on off stump. Finding an edge straight to Butterworth at gully, slight

Definately 4/13

Over 5.5: Hilfenhaus to Symonds, no run, OUT, Symonds gone now, driving hard at a ball on off stump. Finding an edge straight to Butterworth at gully, slight fumble but holds the catch. QLD 3/13

10:49am: Umpires confer and players leave the field. A chance perhaps for the Bulls to regroup after a horror start. QLD 4/22 (Moller 1*, Simpson 8*, Hilfenhaus 2/3, Geeves 2/19).
