I'm not sure which one to buy. I would mainly play sports games but some shooters as well.

Any thoughts?

inb4 owners of each console come in here making huge arguements for why the OP should buy the console that they own like it's a political election.

We need a stickied thread for this in the games section, as I've seen this question asked quite a bit.

If sports games and shooters is all that you're after then both consoles really cater to that. Most sports games are multiplatform so there is no advantage either way with that. Alot of shooters are multiplatform but each console has some really good exclusives as well (360 - Halo, Gears of war 1/2, PS3 - KZ2, Resistance 1/2).

Then you have to determine:

Do you want to play online?
Do you want to watch blu ray movies or stream HD movies from the internet?
How much are you willing to pay?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I do want to play online and the movies doesn't really matter but I heard you can record HDTV onto PS3. Is this true? Anywhere up to about $600-700 would be ideal.

Yeah, it's called PlayTV, around $150 (maybe less, not sure.) You'll have to update your PS3 HD though, I think you can get a 500GB HD for around $100. So essentially it is about $250 all up, much cheaper than buying a HD recorder :thumbsu:

EDIT: I think you can get PlayTV in a bundle or something.

$139 at GAME currently.

You can get PlayTV in the 250GB PS3 bundle.:thumbsu:

So all 250gb PS3 bundles come with play tv?
No not all. There's a few bundles for the 250GB model THIS is the one with PlayTV. But there are other bundles that have Uncharted 2 + 2 games. Assassin's Creed 2 + 2 games as well.

I have a 360 and I like it but...I have received the red ring of death twice and that blows goats. M'soft are good at repairing them quickly but it is still a massive pain in the bum. I only got a 360 cos I had an XBox and wanted to still use all my old games. If that wasn't a factor, it would have been a much tougher choice.

Quick checklist to look through.

1. Do your friends have any consoles? If so, which one do they have?
2. Any exclusives from either that you really want?
3. Do you mind paying to play online? Xbox costs $55 a year to play online.

Recording HDTV shouldn't be too much of a consideration, you could buy a USB HD tuner if you really want it and do it.

Weve had a PS3 for about 18 months, and recently son got an Xbox so we now have both.

The Xbox is severely underwhelming in my opinion. There was proably an argument for it when it was a fair bit cheaper but now PS3 has come down to under 500$ you are much better going that way I reckon. If you have a HDTV the Blue Ray makes it worth the extra easily IMO

Plus I can't believe Xbox charge to go online. LOL, typical Microsoft.

Having said that Borgsta makes a good point though about getting what your friends have.

FYI i have had play tv for almost a month now

it is pretty good. but it has its limitations. The TV Tuner i have on my mac is far more functional..

1. If you're watching something from your buffer, you can't record it. you can only record from live tv. (ie. if i rewind an hour and then i see something i want to record, i can't.
2. If you want to be able to transfer recordings from the ps3 to usb, you have to select "other" as your location. If you select "australia" you will not be able to transfer recordings or fast forward at 120x, or use the time jump feature. If you select "other" you can do all this, but you also won't be able to tune in any of the SBS stations.
3. If you have are trying to buffer tv while recording something, the recording (and the watching) will be very jumpy. this is reportedly only occuring on some hard drives.. so just assume it will happen to you. If i want to record something i have to turn the buffer settings to "only when paused" so that i know if i'm watching live tv there is no buffer.

4. i recorded something for about 2 hours in HD the other day - file is around 13-14 gig. I can't transfer it from my ps3 as my usb hd is formatted in fat 32 which has a max filesize of 4gb. I can copy it to an NTFS drive but then i cannot use that same drive for my mac (well i can but it will be read-only)

with that said.. for just watching TV it is pretty good. i don't have a hd tuner on my tv so it does the job.. for $150 i would have spent almost that much just for a stock standard set top box that has 0 features, so i can't really complain.

Thanks for the replies. Think I am going to go with a PS3.

I think the JB bundle is a good offer. PlayStation 3 bundle 2 (includes PS3 120 GB Slim console, HDMI cable, Grand Theft Auto IV and Assassin’s Creed): $499. What do you guys think?

Thats a great deal. Get on it. :thumbsu:

Nothing better than kicking your friends arse in games. PS3 was a better fit for me (God of War 3 and Metal Gear fan) but I got an Xbox because all my mates had it. Never been disappointed.

I picked up this bundle at JB last night for $529. Pretty happy. Borgsta makes great point in regards to getting what your friends have. I Got it to play a fifa online against a few mates basically.

Lets be completely honest here, if it wasn't for halo the xbox 360 would serve no purpose.

Halo 3 is a great game no doubt and you're right, is reason enough to buy a 360. Not many games of it's age could claim to be still in the top 2 played games on a system, it's a testament to its longevity. Compare that to a game like killzone 2 for instance, which some touted as the ps3 equivalent, how many people still play that?

That said, it's over 2 years since halo's release and i've lost count of the amount of games i've bought since on my 360, so for something that serves no purpose it's going along nicely;).

There's plenty of rad exclusives available for both systems, the best advice anyone could give you is what borgsta said earlier, buy what the majority of your real life mates have.

If you don't have gamer mates, look at the exclusives for both and make your decisions that way. TBH these days the bulk of the decent games are released on both and look more or less identical (to the point fanboys from both sides try to argue which is better using identical looking screenshots from both systems). But each system has some juicy exclusives so that might swing your decision either way.

Personally i couldn't do without my Halo, Mass effects, Forzas, GTA add ons etc etc, i'm sure you'll hear the same from some ps3 owners talking about Resistance or Uncharted and the like.

Both are good systems that do different things better than the other

As someone said, prob needs to be a sticky thread on this so the same answers don't keep coming up ad nauseum

 21 good posts then this opinion driven nonsense.

Sorry I didnt want to have to go in to an in depth explanation and using ther term "useless" was just a throw away line. Basically Halo was the sole reason many people bought an xbox and as a result they are brand loyal to 360. here is an extract from an article to prove my point :

" Then, of all things, Microsoft turned its hat backwards and tried to sit at the cool table. They released the Xbox.
And they lost $4 billion.
But all was not a wash. While some would say Xbox (original) lost money, others realized that Microsoft really just invested the funds. And from this investment, they'd gained a non-Winblows identity in the marketplace, along with a powerful icon that was nearly as synonymous to the Xbox console as Mario was to Nintendo or Sonic to Sega: Master Chief.
Fast forward to 2007. The Xbox 360 is beating the golden boy PlayStation 3. And Halo 3 is the top selling game—on any platform—all year in the US"

Then there is this graph

You could be pretty confident that if halo never existed xbox 360 would be struggling. What major benefits does the xbox have over the ps3?

Why would you buy an xbox when there is a high chance you will get red rings and you have to pay $55 a year to play online? In comparison to the PS3 where there is little chance it will f*** up and online gaming is free. Oh and not to mention the benefit of blue ray.
