AFLW 2024 - Round 8 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
In a day of mixed emotions at the Western Bulldogs, veteran Scott West pulled the pin on his season while key defender Tom Williams moved a step closer to a long-awaited return.
West finally succumbed to the painful knee injury that has sidelined him since Round 6.
The shattering setback raises fresh concerns about West's long-term future, given he is out of contract at the end of the season.
Williams, who has been earmarked as the finals match-up for Hawthorn star Lance Franklin, has ticked every box so far in his bid to return from a shoulder injury and quadriceps strain.
If he can complete training this week, the Dogs are likely to recall Williams for Saturday's game against Adelaide - his first senior match since Round 13.
The Dogs want Williams, who played on Franklin in the Dogs' Round 10 win against the Hawks, to step into the finals cauldron against the most exciting player in the AFL.
West had hoped to return from a knee injury against the Crows, but hit a roadblock when he pulled up sore after training last week.
The 33-year-old withdrew from a planned VFL hitout with Williamstown on Saturday, no longer able to push through the pain. It became clear over the weekend that West, desperate to play finals this year, was confronting mission impossible.
West has said he wants to play on next year.
It is unclear if the latest setback has changed his thinking, but the willpower of West should not be underestimated.
The Bulldogs last night said a final decision on his future would not be made until after the finals. It is a delicate situation given West is a Bulldogs Team of the Century member and seven-time best-and-fairest winner.
West played one game for Williamstown, winning the ball at will, but was clearly limping after halftime. He has been severely restricted by a stress fracture in his right knee.
Bulldogs football manager James Fantasia said West's ball-winning ability was not in doubt, but he was finding it tougher to cover the territory required at AFL level.
"The real issue for him was his ability to cover the ground," Fantasia said.
"It is so disappointing. He made a decision today to rule himself out for the rest of the year. Westy is such a club stalwart and it would have been nice to have him out on the ground in finals."
West has played 324 games and before this season had missed only eight games through injury.
Williams, taken the selection after Franklin at No. 6 in the 2004 draft, has the size and athleticism to at least attempt to match it with the Hawk.
The Dogs were pleased with his ability to keep up with Franklin at Aurora Stadium.
Lindsay Gilbee and Farren Ray, late withdrawals on Friday night against Essendon, are set to return.
A calf injury is highly unlikely to keep defender Ryan Hargrave out.
