They would use some winter rye grasses intertwined with the couch grass ( cynadon dactylon ) to give better grass cover in winter at Optus ( especially Victoria ) .

The rye grasses die away in hot weather so are useless in summer sports whereas the couch grass doesn't  grow well in winter ,  although they have hybrid couch grasses now that keep some growth in winter ( wintergreen , I think it is )
