Sleep deprivation. Fan or Not a Fan?

I did the no sleep thing for a few days once; I was trying to switch channels on the tv without a remote and seeing cobwebs and spiders everywhere after hour 72. I was sure I'd permanently damaged myself for a while. Maybe I did...

I work permanent night shift so I have to stay up for over 24 hours every sunday as my work monday starts at 10.45pm on sunday night and I try and sleep normal at weekends. Ive been doing it for over a year now and I'm on really getting used to it in the last few months.

I prefer to sleep as regularly as possible......lately though I've been getting only around 6 hours sleep a night, and it's started to wear me down a little. I can't really go longer than 24 hours without any sleep at all, but then again I can survive a whole day on 1-2 hours sleep.

I had a habit of staying awake for more than 24 hours straight quite regularly.
I'm not a big fan of doing it, it leads to getting flu's and being run down too easily.
I very rarely do that these days, I'm getting too old for it.
We used to have a pub on the corner of our street which played wall shakingly loud music till 2-3am most nights of the week - that got me into the habit of being kept awake - I almost got to the point where I got ready to torch the joint for a good night's sleep - had the molotov's made up and ready to throw, the place suddenly got a lot quieter all of a sudden.

As for your original question, being sleep deprived is okay when you're a young bloke, but once you start hitting your late twenties, early thirties - forget it.

I used to work Night Duty with 2 littlies, with an ex husband who was not much help.A the same time one of the littlies had ADHD and only slept in 20 minute bursts. It was hard, but you got used to it.Now I struggle to sleep 8 hours, conditioning.

I used to combine uni (hour's drive each way to get there) with night shift five days a week, plus working some Saturday mornings.

Moved jobs, then worked anywhere between 8-20 hours in a single shift, not sleeping a helluva lot.

Basically slept 3-4 hours a day, usually late arvo, and the amount you can achieve in a day is amazing being up for 20 hours. Be it paid work, or errands you have to run, you get a lot done.

Come the end of the working week, I'd absolutely crash though. 16-hour sleeps were not unusual.

Overall, not recommended unless you're super-fit, in which case you get away with a lot more.

Well , for the last 25 years Ive been getting 3 - 4 hours sleep a night , Im very used to it.

But occasionally when a BIG event comes along eg. Olympics or world and european cups comps , i get about 10 hrs all together.

This years Olympics i got a total of 9.5 hrs sleep.

I was out of work for less than 8 days skip.. My new job is what caused my sleep dep this weekend..

An all night bender which included a strip bar, a private poker game, and then the casino till 6.30 AM then I had to be at a meeting for work at 7AM for 2 hours and then start a shift at midday.

I was told in the meeting that at least it smelt like I drank good scotch:eek:

ah. the old scotch aftershave. :D

Let's see, I got home at about 6 this morning, slept until 10, got up for rubbish fathers day stuff, and at 6 this evening i decided enough, I'm going to sleep.

Big mistake. I slept until 11, woke up and I now I have no hope of sleeping again tonight.

And I'm a really, really nasty person without sleep.

On a Saturday night?

You rebel!

I was out til about 3 last night (although admittedly it did involve a trip to the emergency unit!). Sadly that's actually pretty good for me. :D

Yeah was pretty freaky stuff last night.. Usually I have to set the ole JVC VCR to tape the little white dot, but last nigth I got to watch it live!

What happened for you to pay a visit to the emergency dept?

Thursday night has been my best for a while. Got up at 7am Thurs for a normal day.

Got back to hotel room at 5am Friday morn, in bed at 7am (yay awake for 24 hours). Up at 8:30am. Home at 11. Studied til 11am-3pm. Worked 4-9pm. Woohoo! And I wasn't really tired?

I was with a friend and some of her friends at the pub last night. After awhile we lost one of the girls and couldn't find her anywhere, and she was pretty drunk so were getting rather worried (as she had arranged to go home with one of the other girls). She wasn't answering her phone, and somewhere after 2am we got a call from her phone, from a doctor, and apparently this girl had collapsed at the pub and was taken to the hospital by ambulance!

Talk about sobering us up pretty damn quickly! She's alright though, which is the main thing. Apparently just couldn't handle the alcohol well that night.
