What is the smallest crowd recorded? I think it could be in real danger this weekend with Melbourne vs Freo at the 'G. Couldnt get any further away from a blockbuster if they tried. Would be very very surprised if they get 20,000 there.

In the last 10 years it was HAwks vs port on the coldest day in 35 years in melbourne (the highest the temp reached was 9 degrees). 11k at the G that day. Although, heading back a little further, the Tigers were only drawing 3k.

Nice excuse there for the pathetic crowd figure, but statistics show it was actually 13 degrees that day - and not anywhere near a record. 13/14 in winter is about the normal in Victoria. However, there was a record low at Mount Hotham, but sadly there are no AFL games played there.

The Swans only used to pull 6-8K in the early 90's and half of them were kids like me who had free passes from our local club. We would spend half the day out the back just kicking the footy while the seagulls would watch the Swans get pantsed again.

I'm getting some weird 'only 6k at a brisbane/doggies game in the mud at western oval where top score at end of game was 39pts' thought running through my head.

I could be way off though.

Hawthorn have featured in 9 of the 10 lowest crowds in the history of the game.

These crowds ranged from 2,000-3,000.

The smallest recorded crowd was 2,000 between Hawthorn and Melbourne.

Worst Home & Away Crowds (http://stats.rleague.com/afl/crowds/summary.html#03)
2,000 Hawthorn v Melbourne Glenferrie Oval 1941
2,000 Collingwood v Hawthorn Victoria Park 1942
2,500 Hawthorn v Melbourne Glenferrie Oval 1942
2,500 Western Bulldogs v Hawthorn Yarraville Oval 1942
2,500 Geelong v Hawthorn Corio Oval 1935

So i think we can all safely assume that the record will be broken this weekend :p

Barring the last one there at Corio Oval, these four games were played during war time so I guess it's an unfair comparison as many were at war and the standard of the game dropped. Many were also even scared to attend such gatherings like sports events.

Be interesting to get some statistics from when the VFL changed to the AFL in 1990 and onwards.

Smallest crowd I've been at was:

R19 31-Jul-1994
West Coast 4.3 7.8 10.11 13.14 92
Fitzroy 1.4 3.6 3.6 3.8 26
Western Oval 5334

I was a Footscray Social Club member and got in free so I went. I actually doubt that there were that many there from what I remember.

One of the worst games of the decade, if not all time - played in equally atrocious conditions.

is there any utoob of this game?

the bears used to get scant support as well didn't they?

What is the lowest crowd that has been actually counted and not just guessed?

So if the temperature reaches the same level for a Hawthorn game at the 'G later this year can we expect a similar crowd?

Not surprising considering that 4 of those games were during World War 2. Any information from say the 80's onwards?

Smallest crowd i was at was Fitzroy vs Fremantle back in 1995 or 1996 at the western oval.

Must have been about 7,000 there. God only knows why I was there!

A Bears Vs Dogs game in about 1991 made barely 3000 fans at Carrara, that would take some beating. I reckon they might get 9000 to the Melbourne-Freo game, and that would be a fair effort for the demons the way they are going.
