So who won trade week!?

It seemed to me like all trades were justifiable from the club's perspective. A lot of win/win trades. In the short term, Geelong and Collingwood were the big winners as they significantly improved their best 22. In the long term, god knows. Collingwood's strategy looks safe as the guys they brought in are young. Geelong's appears to be a more risky attempt at immediate glory. I quite liked Carlton's approach as I think that a full rebuild is necessary for them and it was a good idea to trade out a couple of talented guys whose inconsistency is likely a result of poor work ethic. You want to start your rebuild with establishing a hard working culture. Assumedly, the guys they brought in fit that bill. the clubs who needed to, found ways to get the points for academy players cheaply. GWS and Suns also did well to improve their positions in next year's supposedly stronger draft. Essendon got good value for the guys they traded out and had a win with free agency.

Carlton have 4 picks in the top 20, certain to draft Jacob Weitering, who is the best defender in the draft and building block of the Carlton back 6, and we got essentially 5 players under 24 years of age, 3 of who were former first rounders and Kerridge a former 2nd rounder for Troy Menzel. Good way to start a rebuild, especially if you get rid of senior players like Henderson, Bell and Yarran who were resigned to leave. Carlton did as well as anyone could have done in their position.

21/10 Brisbane supporters: Aish is a gun come 4th it the rising star and his still only 19. Will be a star we want a first.

Collingwood supporters: His shit couldn't get a game all year! Only worth a second.

22/10 Brisbane supporters: his shit couldn't get a game all year, no heart won't make it.

22/10 Collingwoog supporters: his a gun come 4th in the rising star and is still only 19. We got a bargain.

Or:

Aish will be a very good player and I'd like him very much to still be playing with the Lions. However the Lions were well compensated for his loss, picking up Ryan Bastinac and the ability to secure Top 15 prospects Eric Hipwood and Ben Keays, as well as 2016 Top 5 prospect Jacob Allison.

To be fair, those in the first two camps have largely moved on because he isn't at Brisbane (still think he'll be good, but obviously not for us) or he's now at Collingwood (still think he'll be crap, but don't want to pot their own club just yet). It's now different supporters in the latter two camps carrying on the "good" fight, with a couple of exceptions. And then there's those who's opinion literally did follow your example, and those generally make posts not worth the electrons they're written with. :p

Summed up beautifully. It is almost like the Lions/Pies war is over with this one post. :)

I think that there is a very good chance that Brisbane can really set up their future in this draft by picking up multiple talented kids

Just on Howe - all him being at #5 for us shows is that the player ratings are an absolute farce. Jones and Vince weren't even in the top 100 IIRC.

Now to Aish and Freeman - its really one in and one out. Freeman was always a name mentioned as part of Collingwood's great young depth, but now he's gone and a guy who hasn't proven a whole lot more than him is in. To call him 'elite' on both sides and to cite his footy intelligence before completely discounting Freeman on account of his pace potentially deserting him is a bit rich.

As far as the Pies go, its pick 7 in and pick 10 out. Neither has proven anything yet, aside from disloyalty to their original clubs.

Aish has actually played well at AFL Level in 1st Season then had a Disappointing 2nd Season.

Freeman has had 2 year Hammy Injury.

Bit of a Difference there

"Unfairly"? Please.

Are you suggesting that no matter what his form was or whatever team balance and management decisions were being made on a week to week basis depending on the opponent that James Aish should have been guaranteed a senior game by the Lions, no matter what?

Let's not forget here that the Lions early in the season were trying to find a team structure that worked with the addition of Beams, Christenson and Robinson, all of whom, like Aish, could play in the midfield.

The bottom line was that Aish didn't play well in the last pre-season game against Gold Coast, nor in the Round 1 game against Collingwood and in Round 2 he was sent back to the NEAFL for a week to get a bit of ball and be the main midfielder. He did that and was back in the senior side for Round 3.

In the Round 4 game against West Coast he had six possessions as a midfielder and was once again sent back to the NEAFL to find a bit of the ball. He was back in the senior side for Round 7 after doing so.

Being dropped happens to a myriad of 19 year second year players at all clubs who at times might struggle to play consistent senior football. But somehow when the Lions try to manage Aish to help him re-discover some form, by giving him some time in the seconds to get some ball winning form, it's "unfair".

I have nothing against how they Manged him Playing but did look like Lions put pressure on Aish to Re-Sign during the Year quite a Bit thru the Media

Can you? I don't recall any of them saying that Nathan Freeman was unfairly treated.

Because there is a Difference. Freeman was all but Permanently Injured. So was bit hard to do that.

Though ask some and they say Donavorn stuffed Freeman up

How exactly?

There where lot of Articles saying Aish should Re-Sign soon and There was never anything from Aish or Pickering saying he was.

I think he wanted to leave but Just could not Bring Himself to Commit to that until just before trade week when he announced he was leaving

Is there any reason why Schache, Hipwood and Keays wouldn't stay?

Well 2 out of the last 3 Off-Seasons you have Young Players Leave. Hipwood and Keays should stay as they are Local QLD Boys but Schache is a Vic Boy and he might want to come back home

You need to distinguish between media speculation and what the Brisbane Lions were doing. It's no secret that the lions wanted to retain Aish.

Pickering said Aish was genuinely undecided up until he made his final decision.

Schache's late father played for Brisbane and has already said it would be "cool" to play for the Lions. Certainly coming from Seymour, Schache would already be used to wearing the Lions' colours.

"I think that'd be pretty cool if I ended up at Brisbane. I could go back to where dad was and finish off what he did there,"

Aish played with Norwood and Port Adelaide is the Biggest Rival and they where Black and White

You are Correct but I remember Aish saying the Same Thing when he was Drafted:

But 2 years Later he Left.

NOT saying that will happen but just showing that when a Player is Drafted. They always say they where Happy to be at the Club

Nathan Freeman said same thing:

The difference is that Schache hasn't been drafted yet.

He made that statement that it would be cool to be drafted by the Lions before the 2015 ladder positions had been decided (June 2015) and it was far from certain where he would go.

He stated in another interview that he wants to emulate his late father.

Unlike Aish, Schache has an emotional tie with Brisbane.

Incidentally not all young players automatically want to leave Brisbane. All other 2013 draftees have extended their contracts with the Lions.

Fremantle - Got Bennell for cheap
Essendon - Added early draft picks , for their rebuild for the future.
Adelaide - Added Menzel , Seedsman , Hampton and Gore whilst keeping two first round picks. These selections improve our need for speed and decent foot skills
Port Adelaide - Added Toumpas for nothing and Dixon who gives them service for years to come.
