Another one bites the dust!
The annual 2km time trial heralded the start of the Brisbane Lions AFLW pre-season on Monday night as the squad prepares for the 2023 NAB AFLW Season.
Sophie Conway was second across the line and knocked 14 seconds from her best mark.
Draftee Poppy Boltz was the one to watch out on the track. Boltz, whose parents are former world champion long distance runners, was right in the mix during gruelling repeated running sessions, while the likes of Orla O'Dwyer and Sophie Conway led the pack.
Following the announcement of Bre Koenen and Nat Grider as captain and vice-captain yesterday, the Lions are excited to announce four players into the broader leadership group for 2023.
Reigning league medallist Ally Anderson, who was part of the leadership group in 2022, will be joined by Cathy Svarc and Sophie Conway who are returning members of quartet from 2021.
Belle Dawes has been named among the leaders for the first time in her career as she enters her fourth year with the Club.
Dawes said she was over the moon to be viewed as a leader by her peers.
“I feel very honoured to be honest, knowing that girls have voted me in,” Dawes said.
“I’ve put my hand up for the last three years and I’ve been close Craig has told me.
“When he told me this year I jumped up and down in his office.
“I didn’t have any doubt that Bre and Nat would be voted in again, they were so good in those roles last season.
“Ally (Anderson), Cathy (Svarc) and Soph (Conway), I’ve spent a lot of time with them in the midfield and they are leaders on and off the field.
“Everyone in the leadership group are really great people who are always looking to grow and be better.
As someone who is new to the leadership group, Dawes said she will not shy away from remaining the energiser bunny of the team.
“For me the girls know that I bring a lot of energy to the group,” she said.
“The whole group knows how passionate I am about this team and the club which is something I want to bring to my leadership.
“For them to see me as a leader is really awesome and I’m looking forward to what we can do this year.”
Brisbane Lions AFLW coach Craig Starcevich announced the news to the players and was excited by the diversity of the leadership group.
“We are delighted that we have a cross-section of age and experience,” he said.
“It is a nice representation of the whole group through these six people.
“The leadership group that has been assembled, we feel, are great custodians of our values.”
Hard-running winger Sophie Conway's performance in Brisbane's 55-point win over Sydney on Sunday epitomised exactly what the Lions are about.
Covering a significant amount of ground, her want to get forward and attack is important, but equally important is her willingness to get back and support her teammates in defence.
The Lions work rate was on display from the opening bounce with their ferocity highlighted by the tackle count, winning 74 to 55.
Inside forward 50 was where the Lions were at their defensive best recording 17 tackles to five for the game.
Finishing the game with three goals, 17 disposals and four intercepts, she was rewarded for her hard work, as were the Lions.
Conway has booted five goals from three outings and has started the season on fire with disposals, tackles and goals per game all higher than her career average.
FORWARDS
Sophie Conway (Brisbane), Courtney Hodder (Brisbane), Kate Hore (Melbourne), Keeley Skepper (Carlton), Aine Tighe (Fremantle)
The running and firepower of Conway (17 and three goals) could not be stopped, while teammate Hodder (three goals, six tackles) added her own goal of the year contender.
INTERCHANGE
Sophie Conway (Brisbane), Sabrina Frederick (Collingwood) Ebony Marinoff (Adelaide), Georgie Prespakis (Geelong), Brenna Tarrant (Sydney)
Marinoff (34, nine tackles) hauled the Crows back into the game after the Lions got off to a quick start, Prespakis (26, eight tackles, seven clearances) did the same for the Cats, and Conway (26 and six clearances) emerged triumphant in the battle of the top wingers in the competition.
Already a star at the Lions, this season Conway has added a lot more attack to her game.
Pressing forward from the wing, she is punishing teams on the scoreboard with an equal-career high 10 goals only seven rounds into the season.
Her running capacity often catches opponents out as she pushes forward, but importantly, her willingness to defend has remained.
When asked about her improvements so far this season, Conway touched on a couple of key areas where she’s looked to grow as an athlete.
“I felt I had the best off-season I’ve ever had just changing up my stimulus and doing things that are different from the standard running and gym sessions,” Conway said.
“Daniel Webster our midfield coach is so encouraging in trying to get the best out of you and he’s really helped to drive the standards.”
So far this season, Conway’s averages 2.2 more disposals per game, one goal, one intercept and 1.3 more score involvements per outing from her career averages prior to the start of the season.
This was on show during the Lions pulsating win over the Crows as Conway had a day out.
The energetic winger collected 26 disposals and had 701 metres gained to be one of the Lions best.
A key cog in Craig Starcevich’s side, Conway will be a crucial figure for the Lions as they continued their push towards finals.
Vice-captain Nat Grider, Ally Anderson, Sophie Conway and Dakota Davidson are the quartet rewarded for their strong seasons.
Teammates Anderson and Conway were also selected for the third time in her career after a strong campaign in 2023.
“Sophie has enjoyed a great year with our outside mids and, as always, she’s been as good defensively as she has offensively and has improved in all aspects of her game this season.”
Brisbane has its fingers crossed All-Australian forward Dakota Davidson will be available for Sunday's Grand Final, but is confident it has the personnel to overcome her absence if required.
Davidson crumpled to the turf in Saturday night's preliminary final win over Geelong clutching her knee, but in positive news has been cleared of serious damage and will be assessed later in the week.
She is an integral cog to the Lions' forward line, kicking 21 goals this season to sit alongside Sunday's opponent Tahlia Randall on the goalkicking list, trailing only Melbourne's Eden Zanker (23).
Davidson's fellow first-time All-Australian Sophie Conway said the key forward was doing all she could to be available for the decider.
"It's only Tuesday, so we've still got a fair while to go," Conway said.
"She's already been in here yesterday and today trying to make sure she's ready to go. She'll do everything she can to get herself right.
"She's a vibrant Energizer Bunny. She's phenomenal, not just on the field, but what she brings to us off the field. We love having her out there.
"At the end of the day, we've still got a lot of personnel within our group that if she doesn't get up there's people that can come in and fill that void."
"The biggest thing about our group this year is we've been adaptable and versatile," Conway said.
"We've seen Shannon go forward, we saw her do it on the weekend.
"We're very flexible and that's a key part as to why we've done so well this year.
"Our group has been very open-minded to what the coaching staff has put in front of us."
Brisbane will do its main training session on Thursday afternoon before heading to Melbourne on Friday.
Brisbane Lions trio Ally Anderson, Sophie Conway and Dakota Davidson have capped off stellar seasons by being named in the 2023 AFLW All-Australian team at Monday night’s W Awards.
The three Lions accepted their All-Australian honours at the AFLW’s night of nights from a satellite event in Brisbane due to preparations for Sunday’s AFLW Grand Final against North Melbourne.
For Lions winger Conway it was third time’s a charm as she secured her first All-Australian team selection after being named in the squad in 2020 and 2021.
Her selection follows a career-best season for the energetic Lion who is known for her running capacity and ability to impact contests.
Conway has also been damaging up forward with her hitting the scoreboard in 2023 with 12 goals.
This season the 24-year-old averaged 2.2 more disposals per game, one goal, one intercept and 1.3 more score involvements per outing from her career averages.
Brisbane Lions AFLW winger and 2023 All-Australian, Sophie Conway has extended her stay at the Den to the end of 2027.
Conway penned a three-year extension during the pre-season following a career best year during a premiership winning season, donning her first All-Australian blazer.
Following on from Dakota Davidson’s contract extension last week, Conway said she was grateful to continue the trend of Premiership Lions committing to the Club longer term.
“I’m stoked to be going around with this group of girls for another four years,” Conway said.
“We’ve built an amazing culture here and having been part of the evolution of this team since 2018 I’m excited to see how far we can take it.
“Off the back of a flag last year and a strong pre-season so far, there’s nowhere I’d rather be playing my footy than for the Lions.”
Debuting in 2018, Conway is a two-time premiership player and now a permanent fixture in the Lions leadership group.
After a year where Lions AFLW senior coach, Craig Starcevich threw the magnets around, he applauded Conway’s ability to be versatile and noted her leadership around the group.
“Coming into her 8th season as our 4th most experienced player (60) Sophie plays a key role both on and off field for our group, so we are very excited to see her commit for another four seasons,” Starcevich said.
“Beginning her career as a half forward before developing into a hard-running winger, Sophie has used her athleticism to run hard both ways and is always a threat to the opposition when she has the ball inside 50.
“As part of our leadership group again this year, Sophie has exceptional training standards, regularly stands up in big moments on field, and is now providing more guidance for our younger players off field, her personality brings energy to our group and is a natural fit with her leadership style.”
All-Australian winger Sophie Conway has penned a contract extension to stick with Brisbane until at least the end of 2027 NAB AFLW season.
Conway enjoyed a career-best season in 2023, with her 12 goals from as many games, and serious running power crucial assets in the Lions' surge to a second premiership.
A two-time premiership player, Conway was initially drafted with pick No.45 in the 2017 Telstra AFLW draft and just six games into her career suffered an ACL injury that ruled her out in 2019.
She came back from the injury fitter than ever, allowing her to progress to her role on the wing, which she has made her own.
Now one of the most experienced players on Brisbane's list, she has played 60 career games and kicked 37 goals, proving to be a vital cog in the Lions' machine, exemplified by her elevation to the leadership group.
"I'm stoked to be going around with this group of girls for another four years," Conway said.
"We’ve built an amazing culture here and having been part of the evolution of this team since 2018 I'm excited to see how far we can take it. Off the back of a flag last year and a strong pre-season so far, there's nowhere I'd rather be playing my footy than for the Lions."
Head coach Craig Starcevich has enjoyed watching Conway evolve since joining the club as a teenager.
"Coming into her eighth season as our fourth most experienced player, Sophie plays a key role both on and off field for our group, so we are very excited to see her commit for another four seasons," Starcevich said.
"Beginning her career as a half forward before developing into a hard-running winger, Sophie has used her athleticism to run hard both ways and is always a threat to the opposition when she has the ball inside 50.
"As part of our leadership group again this year, Sophie has exceptional training standards, regularly stands up in big moments on field, and is now providing more guidance for our younger players off field, her personality brings energy to our group and is a natural fit with her leadership style."
Multi-year extensions have been a trend for Brisbane this year, after the club experienced instability around its playing list as the AFLW expanded. Conway is the 12th two-time premiership Lion to commit long-term.
