I have heard from a reliable source that the League have canned the Southern footy show for next year and beyond. Apparently their blaming AFL Victoria for putting pressure on them to stop it or something along those lines. What do people think? Personally I think it is about the only thing that seperates our league from others. Have heard that the footy show team are not happy!

It would be a shame as it is a fine show. However, its about $$. The show costs about $80k a year to put on. Last year it only recovered about $65k in sponsorship, meaning that the clubs had to foot the bill. They also levied the clubs a few years back. It also assumes that every sponsor is there because of the show- the league had sponsors before the show. Also, does it need to be 1.5 hours long if you are showing us highlights from Camberwell and Prahan back in 1980?. If it cant pay for itself, the clubs shouldn't have to pay out year after year.

That is a shame. I agree with other posters that it is a great point of difference for the competition. Also agree that we don't need 1980 highlights or reserves footage. Would an abbreviated 1hr show that focused on match of the day, with some scores/tips & maybe 1 interview be less costly to run?
And surely Springvale RSL must have made enough in burnt steaks and Over 40s dance classes to cover the difference?;)

Just a few points from what I understand (and no I am not Daryl Pitman, I am the one to his right!):
- channel 31 could not be more supportive of the show continuing, the Southern footy show is rated as one of their best and that comes from the CEO of the station
- the TV show allows the league to add something extra to their sponsorship package, otherwise all they can offer is the same as every other local footy comp
- the loss of the TV show will result in some sponsorship withdrawl
- more time (in minutes) is devoted to talking about Div 1 than any other division, also more games from Div 1 are covered than any other Division
- there is no point in the show only being about the SFL, beacuse then you will isolate your audience. Therefore it trys to be and needs to attract viewers from all over Melbourne and you're not going to do that with an in depth preview of St Pauls VS St Kilda City beacuse they couldn't care less. So you need interviews with guests, competitions, highlights like the VFA stuff that appeals to a wide audience. How many viewers do you think would watch a 1hr show featuring a couple of teams from the SFL their games and an interview or two??? And don't get me started on tips, watching people give tips on games has to be the most boring television there is. How many people watch the CH9 footy show to see who the experts tip??
- finally the reason reserves footage is shown is because its either that or watch three blokes talk about a game. Any footage is better than no footage. If there were more volunteers then maybe we could get more senior footage, but seeing as there are only four people who get footage and two of those are unable to get senior footage because they are preoccupied calling the match of the day then you can see the predicament.

And further ...Whoever said it costs $80,000 a year is in fairyland.
The budget for this year is actually around $53,000 and there are various spin-offs from that such as DVD sales, finals series coverage and DVDs (imagine hiring the professionals to package all your grand finals, presentation night clips, etc., etc.) which never seems to be taken into account by the detractors. All of that is done under the Footy Show budget.
It could be a rude shock next season if the league had to outsource all of those things.
And the radio is inextricably linked to it so that will either go or be of an inferior quality.

Fair points LFM and understand you want to appeal to a wider audience. (still debatable whether non-SFL people would be tuning in just to see old highlights though??). Not being critical, it was more about the idea of trying to come up with a more basic alternative in order to keep the show viable. So can you tell us if this is done and dusted, or just under discussion?

I have enjoyed the old VFA clips.....remember those days with much affection.

Apart from that, I think the SFL would be foolish if they cease to support the Southern Footy Show. As others have said, it is their point of difference and the SFL should be looking at more ways to capitalize on it.

Congratulations to Darryl and the boys, they do a terrific job in promoting the SFL and local footy.

Pull the SFL annual report from the end of the 2006 season and it will show you a loss for the media coverage of around $15000. This was tabled at the AGM, not fairyland. Exposure is nice, but it doesnt pay the bills, just feeds a few egos.

So your commenting on figures from 2006. The screening fees are significantly less now. What about last years figures or the budget from this year? How much sponsorship money will be lost without the extra coverage?

Just another f.u.c.k.up by the SFL. Worst league EVER.
Yeah fair call No.4, It has been that way for so long now i think everyone is just used to it. As far as the SFL Footy Show goes it will be a sad day if its dropped next year and the league should stop blaming other people and solve it in house for once in their lives. They take more than enough money from all the clubs to be able to sort it out. The boy's on the Footy show do a grreat job and i wish them good luck in keeping the show going.:cool:
