Re: Team Changes

Looking at the spread of our players ranked by size/position one can see that the imminent retirement of half our small midfield group is of some concern. Cathal Corr may be able to work his way into that group (if I have his height right).
It also becomes clear why we sacrificed our first pick in the draft for a tall forward and why we also opted for a tall defender with our first available pick in the national draft.
The ruck looks OK, Rix being considered the best available adds depth.
The rookies are nicely spread through the categories.

Our middle tier age group 22 to 24 years age group:

  Brooks, Barry 7 21 24 Dec 1983 198cm 95kg Grassy Ruck

This group contains most of our rucking stocks in: Michael Rix, Blake, Ackland, Kosi, and Brooks. Around this age most ruckmen start to hit their straps. Rix and Brooks have yet to establish themselves at AFL level. All of the remaining players (with the exceptions of Murray and Schwarze) have established themselves as regular players. The standouts are Nick and Kosi.

Re: Team Changes

Our players at peak performance years 25 - 27yo

Code:
  Voss, Brett 136 27 22 Feb 1978 181cm 84kg Morningside Defender
  Hayes, Lenny 140 25 14 Jan 1980 186cm 85kg Pennant Hills Midfield
  Milne, Stephen 97 25 08 Mar 1980 176cm 80kg Dandenong Stingrays Forward
  Baker, Steven 114 25 22 May 1980 179cm 83kg Geelong Falcons Midfield

All players are established as "best 22" but there's not many of them.
All would probably walk in to any other team of the league.

Re: Team Changes

Our aging stars 28+yo

Code:
  Harvey, Robert (V+) 317 34 21 Aug 1971 181cm 84kg Seaford Midfield
  Peckett, Justin (V+) 235 33 05 Oct 1972 182cm 84kg Karingal Utility
  Thompson, Andrew 194 33 21 Oct 1972 180cm 81kg Old Melburnians Midfield
  Gehrig, Fraser 213 29 03 Mar 1976 195cm 104kg Murray Bushrangers Forward
  Hudghton, Max 173 29 02 Sep 1976 191cm 92kg Northern Knights Defender
  Powell, Stephen 132 29 07 Sep 1976 181cm 84kg Western Jets Midfield
  Hamill, Aaron 181 28 20 Aug 1977 184cm 94kg Tuggeranong Forward

This aging group contains a number of our midfielders; Harvey, Peckett, Thompson, and Powell as well as a key forward and a key defender.
Harvey, Peckett and Thompson are amongst the oldest players in the league, yet for different reasons, all are capable of playing a significant role in a premiership tilt. Aaron Hamill is still at the lower age end of this group and is likely to continue with his peak age performance (that we saw glimpses of in 2005).

Looks again to be a fine spread.Penny and Jones departures will hurt us to some degree but injury permitting they are covered by Fisher and X.
All guns firing at the same time 2006 should be our year!!:thumbsu:

Outs: L.Penny, A.Jones, B.Guerra, N.Stone.

If you look at the games played in 05, we actually had a pretty good run with injuries (except finals where we lost key players). Hamill, Kosi, L.Fisher, X & Penny all missed large chunks, whilst Riewoldt, Powell, Harvey & Fiora missed a portion of the season. Our midfield and backline (until finals) stayed very much intact.

Most young players improved on their career stats in 05, and mid-range players (Hayes, Baker, Voss, Milne etc…)continued to play excellent footy.

This season I would expect more output from Riewoldt & Gehrig and more games hopefully from Hamill & Kosi (these four are our most influential players). Steady progress again from our middle aged core group (Hayes, Baker, Voss, Hudghton, Milne – who will be joined by Dal Santo, Ball, Maguire, S.Fisher who now have more experience. Our older players will wane a bit you’d expect (Harvey, Peckett, Powell and Thompson) and one or two may be overtaken by some developing youngsters (McQualter, Montagna or McGough). Pfitzner, McDonnell, Gilbert, Sweeney, Raymond and Corr will all be given time at springvale to develop. The big improvers for me in 2006 will be Goddard, Montagna, Fiora, McQualter & Brooks with Schwarze, Gram, L.Fisher & Ferg all pushing hard for selection and providing good depth..

I think we have a good squad in 2006, not as good as last season, but with improvement and a bit of luck can win the flag.

From the Stats for 05 and Career Stats, I have picked the best 22 for the start of the year IMO

Why do you think we've made "poorer draft choices"?
Here are our picks from 2004:

Pick #17, Andrew McQualter- Played 7 games this year and has shown huge promise, right from his 16-disposal 11-tackle debut at Subi vs West Coast. Went on and played consistently from there on. Has bulked up considerably over the pre-season and looks like he will over-take Andrew Thompson this year.

Pick #33, Cain Ackland- After a few injury-riddled seasons with Port, he finally hit his straps in 2005, holding down our number 1 ruck spot, and also proved that he was quite handy up forward. An absolute bargin at pick 33, will only get better.

Pick #49, Mark McGough- Probably the most maligned player at the club because of his dodgy kicking and lack of pace, however he has shown that he can rack up 20 possessions a game from 40 minutes of game time, and has significantly improved his disposal over the pre-season and has been working on his running style. Probable replacement for Powell in a couple of years.

Pick #63, James Gwilt- Probably the only person to ever dominate a qualifying final in their second game. Gwilty has a beautiful, long accurate kick, is good overhead and is a very big boy now. He certainly won't be pushed around in '06.

So the 2004 draft turned out to be excellent, and the 2005 draft looks very promising as well.

Pick #33, Sam Gilbert- Has impressed with his blistering pace and great skills. Difinate replacement for Hudghton in a few years. A bit too thin to play AFL yet though.

Pick #49, Michael Rix- The big, strong tap-ruckman everyone has been saying we need. Except this guy has good pace, excellent endurance and ok skills. But we're still not sure if he'll make it at AFL level though..could turn out to be another NicK Stone.

Pick #63, Philip Raymond- Too skinny to play any time soon, but has amazing skills, great pace and a good goal-sense.

Pick #70-something, Justin Sweeney- He has good skills, is very, very competitive, good overhead and can play with the big-boys. Has been accused of being a bit lazy at training, but when he puts his mind to it in practice games, he has been awsome.

So how exactly do you think we've recruited poorly? It seems we've addressed all of the flaws in the playing group, both long and short-term.

The key is to say things that make sense, because it overloads their little brains. After a post like that, they're restricted to immature, over-used one-liners about someone/something they don't like about our club (usually GT or our spoon collection).

If you look at the table below, we can make some simple comparisons between all team lists for 2006. The first section shows how many teenagers are on each club’s primary list (excluding rookies). These guys are the future of the club, their fortunes over the next 5 years will have a significant impact on how well the club does. Richmond and Hawthorn who are pursuing a strict youth policy lead the way with Port Adelaide, somewhat surprisingly next on the list. The teams near the top of this list can be interpreted as those clubs in the rebuilding phase of the development of their lists.

The next section of the table reveals how many 20-24 year olds are on each list. The effect of Geelong’s focus on developing youth from the late 1990’s are revealed with 24 players on their list in this age group. For many of the players in this age bracket this phase of their development is very important as they are heavily scrutinised in this period by coaching staff to determine if they will stay on the list or be delisted.

Having a lot of young players does not necessarily mean that success is years away. Premierships can be won with these groups of players. The 1993 Essendon team list before the season began had seven teenagers and five 20-24 year olds that would go on to be part of the premiership team that year.

The next table shows the number of player in the 25+ age bracket, these players should be at the peak of their playing ability and given that they have survived on an AFL list to this age should be talented. This is a very important group in the sense that it should provide leadership to the youngsters in the list and in game situations be able to keep a cool head in pressure situations.

Interestingly, the two Grand Finalists from last year both sit exactly in the middle of the table below which shows the average age of each list for 2006. It is apparent that Adelaide and St Kilda both have the oldest lists in the competition indicating that they may soon get ‘too old’, so any premiership success must be achieved in the next year or two before each of these clubs has to go through a new rebuilding phase. The numbers may look like they are close but the difference between Adelaide on top and Hawthorn on the bottom is over 500 days for each player on the list. For a list of 40 players that is 20,000 extra days (around 54 years) of experience. That is significant difference.

Age is but one factor among many that guides a team’s fortunes through any particular season. However, having a gander at where your team sits amongst the other teams in terms of age hopefully provides a little perspective about where the club sits now in terms of experience.

- Ages used were current at 24th Jan 2006.

Re: Team Changes

It is an argument buster.
I've encountered beligerant Melbourne supporters who try to belittle St Kilda's performance or a Collingwood supporter might argue that the Saints have only got where they are because the draft. I pull this out and show them that while they may be right, their team is worse.
