Clark is more your inside mid these days.
I know that is where he plays, but I see him as a Dal Santo type of player, whose courage and determination has led to some horrific injuries, jaw, facial, upper body injuries. Now with the injection of a few players more suited to the physicality of inside play, we can get improved performances out of him as an outside mid. I don't mean stick him on a wing type outside, I mean have him be the first receiver more often, let him use his world class evasive skills, rather than continue to grind him to paste against 193 cm 95kg mids

Yeah I guess all the talk about Macrae is how much he'll help Steele, but there's a very real chance that he allows Clark to reach his potential as an inside/out distributor. Good call

Gees its going to be tough watching Membrey & Battle run around in opposition colours next year. The other thing is in the short term they will have more chance of winning a flag than the 44 blokes on our list.

I'm sure Hawthorn and Collingwood also have openings at their clubs for overly pessimistic supporters.

We have very few proven consistent players. If you divided the team on the basis of guaranteed decent to excellent contribution week in week out -

These groups having nothing to do with raw talent.. just output and impact every single week with the odd exception

Call ‘em Group A

Sinclair
Wilkie
Marshall
Hill
Webster
MacCrae

That’s it

Group B
…..either works in progress or promises, hopes, and our desperately wanting them to finally succeed.

Hunter
King
Owens
Sharman
Caminiti
Wilson
Henry
NAS (he’s almost groupA now)
Phillipou
Windy

Then Group C
Professionals who have a crack for better or worse. Sometimes standout performances, sometimes quiet

Howard
Butler
Steele
Wood
Jones
Stocker
Higgins

Group A is a bit light, way too light!
Group B is way too big but there is upside
Group C a bit long, but every team has em

NAS definately group A, Webster more like Group C. Higgins, Steele & Wood in group A for mine.

I see where you are going, but generally you need speed on the outside something Clark doesn't have. He is an in and under extractor and everyone has been suggesting for years he needed to develop a midfielders physique, but it seems the gym is not his favourite place.

Surprised to not see more Hugo.

From what i saw towards the end of the season, he's best 22.

He's the player i am most excited to see in the new year. I have a very high opinion of his skill set.

I would have him at half forward, linking up with the midfield.
Who are you replacing though? Henry is a lock, Wilson is a lock, Hill is a lock. We saw him replace Butler this year and that didn’t work for team structure

Doesn’t really matter tbh, injuries are inevitable and he’ll get a look in even if not best 22

He was last picked to end the year and of the mid/fwd types, we have Henry, Windy and Macrae to add to the rd23 side.

Not to say he couldn't improve to be best 23 over preseason but based on performance right now, it's hard to have him ahead of those guys.

yeah Nas group A for sure, Webster I'd say B, he's criminally underrated but A is too high.
yeah, but to be fair, I am just based on consistency. Webster, at best, maybe just a 6/10 player, but he produces that 6/10 week-in-week out. So he's good enough, to make the 22 and qualifies.
NAS, yeah, I see..maybe now. Guaranteed high output?

The quality in Group B is huge, but the performances are patchy.

For Steele, maybe he should be Group A there too, as long it is based on the '23 - '24 Steele, 7/10 player and not the '19-'20. 9/10 player. They are surely two different players. Notwithstanding, he could be reborn in '25? Just going on track record here.

Considering the past couple of years we've debuted our 1st rounders in Round 1 (Pou, Wilson) I think we'll need to find space for them in the side too

Also think Ross really likes Clark so not sure if he makes way

Might be a case of 'earn your spot' for Hugo with a good start to the VFL season

Steele and Higgins group C is beyond laughable
Both experienced campaigners.
Nowadays, I see Steele as a young Seb Ross. In the engine room, working away. As he is now, he might settle and be a contributor like that, and goes into the Grade A group because it’s not based in talent. Higgins is, like many small forwards hit and miss but is certainly a goer.

Ross never quite managed what Steele has been doing reasonably well all year.
Ross was never that player.
Contested ball, clearances. Steele, not Ross.
I don't see either of them how you see them.

Seb was two time B&F!

But I do feel Higgo and Steele are definitely classy players. Actually maybe Steele is somehwere between Lenny Hayes and Seb Ross at his peak in 2016. And could still be the champs in the hour of triumph. If Steele or Higgo kicked the winning goal in a flag it would be deserving...

Just make him the sub.

Do you remember this time last year? When we would try to predict the best 22?

Who were the players that ended up surprising you that they were picked so often?

For me, I’d say Ronnie Byrnes comes to mind. Perhaps even Hunter C! I thought Ronnie was gonna be a reserve regular in ‘24. Not to be.

Bonner was still in everybody’s good books back then. Do t know exactly when that changed, but boy did the switch flip!

But then, to make it even more interesting, Bonner was consistently picked, over and above others too.

And to add the final twist, was one of the first chopped!!

It was a very odd year in retrospect. Agree?
