The great thing is the flexibility of our squad .:.. it’s almost like Dimma has been playing the long game in 2022 …. ;)

Baker: fwd, mid or def
Gibcus : def or fwd
Balta: def, fwd or ruck
Short: def, wing or mid
Bolton/Dusty: mid or fwd
Miller: def or ruck
Ralphsmith: hbf or wing
Ross: mid or wing
Mansell: def or fwd

I think 2022 was always planned as a year of experimentation and development. Then all of a sudden we were a lot better than we expected …..

But it holds us in really good stead for 2023 when the inevitable injuries hit.

Grimes Tarrant Vlas
Rioli Balta Short
Kmac Prestia Pickett
Bolton Lynch Cumbo
Ryan Dusty MRioli
Nank Tarantino Hopper

JRoo Cotch Broad Baker

Em: Miller Hugo Graham Gibcus

I reckon this is our best 22 if everyone is fit and firing which probably wont happen once ever, but a man can dream.

I'd personally play Miller ahead of Ryan, he might be an option in 2023 though after Jack passes on.

You are most likely correct and I dont hate it. I just see Ryan as a future gun Ruck / Fwd - he is already better than Miller IMO.

Fair enough, Ryan has had no exposure to AFL yet (I wont count his debut) and Miller was being played as a KPD in the magoos, so it's a bit of a long bow to say Ryan is better at this stage. He might have more potential, yes, but Miller's flexibility in being able to play fwd/ruck/def has him ahead IMO.

Would be a huge bonus of Ryan could step up next season and make that 2nd ruck spot his. I have high hopes.
He has been so good in the VFL either playing KPF or Ruck. If Miller can impact after playing almost exclusively as a KPB, then I believe Ryan can be even better.

Yeah I think he definitely has a higher ceiling but who really knows until he gets a chance. Miller could be a very good ruck/KPF with a pre season training there but I still reckon he will be a KPD long term. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if Grimes pulls up stumps after next season especially if he has another injury riddled year. Miller, Balta and Gibcus is a good young mix in defence going forward.

What I’m excited about is what our team looks like in 2025 with players already on our list … even though Lynch, Broad, Dusty etc… will still likely be going, I’ve taken out anyone 32+ - 2025 age in brackets:

B: Brown (22). Gibcus (22). Vlastuin (31)

HB: Baker (27). Balta (25). Rioli (28)

C: Ross (25). Hopper (28). Ralphsmith (23)

HF: Bolton. (26). Ryan (24). Cumberland (24)

F: MRJ (23). Bauer (23). Clarke (21)

R: Nank (31). TT (27). Sonsie (22)

I/C: Banks (22). Graham (27). Miler (26) Short (29)

E: Macca (31). Mansell (25). Stack (25). Dow (24)

The only players here who have not shown form yet at AFL level are : Brown, Ryan, Banks, Bauer. I’d be confident Ryan makes the grade, and 2 of the other 3 also based on exposed VFL form.

No wonder we seem willing to give up a lot of draft collateral for TT and Hopper. Our list looks very well balanced and set for many years to come.

I've been adamant all year that Riewoldt and Cotchin shouldn't be walk up starts if they were to go on in 2023, no reason to change it now even with us adding Taranto & Hopper to the list. Long term success should take precedence over short term success.

I get that, but Tarrant needs to play as does Jack and Cotch, they wont play every game and Jack even intimated that he'll be playing some games in the magoos, probably tongue in cheek, but maybe not.

Gibcus, Sonsie, Ross et al will get enough games given they are our 24th-25th-26th players after Graham, once the older boys are gone they will then get their chance.

Grimes Balta Gibcus
Rioli Broad Vlastuin
Kmac Prestia Pickett
Bolton Lynch Cumbo
Martin Riewoldt MRJ

R: Nankervis Tarantino Hopper

Int: Cotchin Miller Baker Short

Em: Ross, Sonsie, Hugo Stack Graham

Ross very unlucky
Would like to see Sonsie over Cotchin but won't happen.
Love to see Stack in the side. If he stays and the fire returns he is best 22 on talent.

I like it.....

Pretty good squad where Tarrant and Soldo can't make the emergencies ;)

FB: Grimes Tarrant Broad
HB: Rioli Balta Vlastuin
C: Pickett Taranto McIntosh
HF: Cumberland Bolton Riewoldt
FF: MRJ Lynch Martin
FOL: Nankervis Prestia Hopper

INT: Baker, Ross, Miller, Cotchin, Sonsie (Assuming five on the bench)

You'll probably notice Short is missing, which is harsh. I'd just rather put games into Sonsie.
Short will rotate in for Cotchin as Cotchin won't get on a plane all year most likely.

Gibcus, I couldn't find room for, im hoping he will eventually force out Tarrant at some stage this year. Even though I still believe we will try and develop him to take over from Riewoldt.

Our spine is something to behold though.

One of short. Baker. Graham is going to be unlucky if Richmond can get it's best side on the park.

With Tarrant. Ross. Sonsie. Gibcus. Etc. The top26 or so looks quite competitive

💯

Tarrant wears Hawkins like a glove. Cotchin finished equal 6th in the B&F, missing a fee games and coming second in our clearances. Jack stepped up in the final and found a place in our forward line where Lynch could he number 1 and we were the highest scoring forward line in the competition.

We don't win next year's flag without a fully fit and firing Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt and Grimes. These guys should be playing around 18-20 games next year excluding finals
