Re: Post your stats questions here

If Geelong win next week, would they be the only side to have four consecutive blocks of 10 games won or more? They have gone 15W, L, 12W, L, 12W, L(G.F):( and now 9W.

You know by saying that it now means they will lose?

Go Bombers!

Re: Post your stats questions here

When was the last time 16th place on the ladder beat 1st place on the ladder?

Wednesday, May 27: http://footystats.freeservers.com/Daily/Diary.html

Last has beaten first 21/140 times. In a greater than 12 team comp (post-1986):

Code:
1989-R20-C 14 d 1 Bri (14th) 12. 5- 77 v Haw (1st) 9. 7- 61 16pts
1991-R24-PP 15 d 1 Fit (15th) 14.15- 99 v WCE (1st) 12.17- 89 10pts
1995-R9-P 16 d 1 StK (16th) 11.14- 80 v Car (1st) 3. 6- 24 56pts
1997-R3-P 16 d 1 StK (16th) 19.11-125 v Col (1st) 17.16-118 7pts
2005-R9-MCG 16 d 1 Col (16th) 18.10-118 v WCE (1st) 15. 5- 95 23pts

One interesting thing to note. From the list of 21 wins by last over first, if you remove
- results in 1916 (4 team competition) [3 games]
- games within the first 6 rounds [5 games]
- games where last had a distinct home ground advantage [13 games]

you are left with no results. So it's fairly safe to say that last will not beat 1st playing at 1st's home ground, and definitely not after 6 rounds.

Re: Post your stats questions here

I have an interesting question:

What's are the biggest turnarounds in a game? Say being down by heaps, and winning by heaps?

One game I remember was in 2003, when the Brisbane Lions trailed Carlton by 30 points in the second quarter. But Brisbane got back into the game, took the lead and ran away to win by 77 points.

2 things

does someone have a link or stats for teams that attack through the corridor the most? i heard that we are 3rd (and since round 5 we are 1st) somewhere

also in the herald sun it showed teams points for during the first 5mins of the game, i was wondering if someone had those stats or a link to those stats

thanks guys

p.s i didnt know if these should be part of the 'question' thread or not

Re: Post your stats questions here

I might do this myself if I get a chance, otherwise

Can someone list the premiership coaches over the last 20 years and how old they were on Grand Final day?

I wouldn't mind more than 20 years actually.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Geelong at 9-0 have the best ever record for a team 2nd on the ladder.

Which 2nd placed team had the best x-1 record deepest into the season?

(Hawthorn were 11-1 and 2nd in 2008 while the Bulldogs were 13-1-1 and 2nd in 2008)

Question is, has a team ever beaten those records?

I was a bit bored before so I decided I'd give it a crack. So here it goes.

1988-Alan Joyce (Haw) 46
1989-Allan Jeans (Haw) 56
1990-Leigh Matthews (C'wood) 38
1991-Alan Joyce (Haw) 49
1992-Mick Malthouse (WCE) 39
1993-Kevin Sheedy (Ess) 45
1994-Mick Malthouse (WCE) 41
1995-David Parkin (Carl) 53
1996-Denis Pagan (Nth Melb) 49
1997-Malcolm Blight (Adel) 47
1998-Malcolm Blight (Adel) 48
1999-Denis Pagan (Nth Melb) 52
2000-Kevin Sheedy (Ess) 52
2001-Leigh Matthews (Bris) 49
2002-Leigh Matthews (Bris) 50
2003-Leigh Matthews (Bris) 51
2004-Mark Williams (Port) 46 <------yeh thats right :D
2005-Paul Roos (Syd) 42
2006-John Worsfold (WCE) 38
2007-Mark Thompson (Geelong) 43
2008-Alistair Clarkson (Haw) 39

Re: Post your stats questions here

LOL, thanks. I was just about to come back and say my main interest was in how many 'older' coaches have won a premiership. So Jeans, Parkin, Pagan, Sheedy and Matthews all won in their 50s, although all were at the end or towards the end of their reign at successful clubs (arguable whether Carlton were a successful side over a period of time).

Although I'm not sure how Alan Joyce aged just 1 year from 88 to 91 :)

Re: Post your stats questions here

On how many occasions in the last few years has a team, any team, been held goalless for a quarter?

For a half?

Been a few this year already.

And another one. Melbourne scoreless in the 3rd quarter tonight, goalless after half time.

Re: Post your stats questions here

What have been the best starts to a season?

Thought I'd give it a start. Have probably missed some, say that included a draw in the first 10 games:

20-0: Essendon (2000)
18-0: Collingwood (1929)
13-0: Geelong (1953)
13-0: Melbourne (1956)
12-0: West Coast (1991)
11-0: Carlton (1908)
10-0: South Melbourne (1932)
10-0: Melbourne (1955)
10-0: St Kilda (2004)
10-0: St Kilda (2009)
10-0: Geelong (2009)

Re: Post your stats questions here

From wikipedia re AFL Draft eligibility:

Currently to be eligible for the draft, a player must be at least 17 years of age on or before 30 April in the year in which they are drafted. This has been slowly increased over the past few years due to concerns about school age players potentially having to leave home to play football in another state. For the 2009 draft the eligibility age has been increased by 4 months so players must be 18 on 31 December in the year in which they are drafted.

Thus, which players have been the youngest debutants since the introduction of the VFL/AFL Draft?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Teams who have won Q2 after winning Q1
Alltime: 5902 / 13139 - 45%
Last 10 years: 985 / 1876 - 52%

Q3 after Q2
Alltime: 6143 / 13167 - 46%
Last 10 years: 1038 / 1871 - 55%

Q4 after Q3
Alltime: 6414 / 13152 - 49%
Last 10 years: 1041 / 1883 - 55%

Alltime figures seem counter-intuitive, but the sums look right.

Milestones in a round, and last beat first will take a little more work.
cheers mate. i really thought Q3 to Q4 would be a lot higher (i was thinking up around 70%) due to fatigue factor and being harder to stop teams getting a roll when your tired.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Over a career, or over a season, which players have turned in the most games of 20+ disposals and 20+ hit-outs?

Dean Cox seems to do it most weeks.

40+ points down at 3/4T and then winning: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VFL/AFL_records#Biggest_comebacks

In general, these are the biggest deficits overturned:

69pts Q2 (10min) Essendon 27.9 (171) d Kangaroos 25.9 (159) R12, 2001
63pts Q2 (5 min) Hawthorn 17.7 (109) d St Kilda 14.12 (96) R13, 1999
60pts Q2 (27min) Coll 14.23 (107) d St Kilda 15.10 (100) R7, 1970
56pts Q2 (28min) Hawthorn 26.15 (171) d Geelong 25.13 (163) R8, 1989
55pts QT St Kilda 15.22 (112) d Hawthorn 14.15 (99) R13, 1937
55pts Q2(10min) Coll 19.9 (123) d Richmond 16.13 (109) R14, 1978
52pts HT Coll 14.23 (107) d St Kilda 15.10 (100) R7, 1970

Was there ever any spotlight placed on Carlton in 1995? Top of the ladder against the bottom of the ladder St Kilda, to only kick three goals for the game seems very unusual. They also lost to the second-bottom Sydney that year I believe.

Did they have many injuries at the time?

I remember this happening with Carlton back in 1995; it just seemed to be an aberration more than anything. The Swans have been a bogey side of Carlton for the better part of 20 years - the Blues last beat the Swans in Sydney in 1993, a year in which the red & whites won only one game.

Changed Joyce's age to what it should be :) I was surprised at how young Worsfold was and what he managed to do with the WCE in under 5 years as coach.
