Taken at no.58 in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, Steven Gaertner is an
athletic tall defender with plenty of pace and a brilliant aerobic capacity.
His natural position is at center halfback, although he impressed in the
ruck for the Sandringham Zebras, fully utilising his impressive leap to
pinch-hit when Ben McEvoy was called into the firsts.
Upon being invited to the 2008 NAB AFL Draft Camp, Gaertner impressed
with his pace, coming in equal second in the 20m sprints with a time
of 2.88 seconds, as well as coming 6th overall in the vertical jump
test (70cm) and 10th in the agility test (8.39sec), and was widely
expected to be picked up in the draft.
Despite still being slightly raw, Gaertner looks to be a very capable
key defender in the future.

Typical of Jay Clarke - a headline which infers a negative to our club
The fact is that Steven was very happy with the opportunities and treatment given him by the club, but he decided that a career in footy is not for him and left the club on good terms.
