Swan Reach was stripped of points after investigation of player registrations.

July 05th, 2023

The leading team in the Omeo & District League's senior football competition has been pushed to the bottom of the ladder as a penalty for breaking AFL Victoria rules.

Swan Reach were on their way to a premiership when they were sensationally stripped of all their points by AFL Victoria after submitting incorrect player point assessments of four players and exceeded their total team points.

The Swans have also been fined $1000 for each of the four players concerned.

Swan Reach is still undefeated after nine rounds but they are now the only team of six in the league that mathematically can't make the finals.

The move puts Omeo-Benambra on top of the ladder, the club that Swan Reach will play this Saturday.

Swans president Paul Marsden said the club is in total shock, describing the penalty as "a kick in the guts".

Omeo District Football Netball League (ODFNL) ladder leader and premiership favourite, Swan Reach, has been stripped of all its 2023 wins after being found guilty and penalised for intentionally breaching the 2023 Player Points Policy.
Evidence was presented to AFL Gippsland recently about a possible breach by the club and after an investigation which it was asked to supply additional information in support of its assessments, the club was deemed to have operated outside the rules.
Players at all AFL Victoria clubs are allocated points which is determined by player's playing history and achievements and is structured in a way to promote player retention and loyalty.
Swan Reach Football Netball Club was allocated 40 points by the ODFNL for the season 2023.
The club has been deemed to have played four players whose points allocation was incorrectly assessed, with AFL Gippsland finding that had the players taken the field under the correct assessment, Swan Reach would have been over their allotted 40 points in all it's wins, so it had no choice but to remove the victories.

NTFL WOMENS 2023

Reigning NWFL women’s premier Ulverstone has been excluded from the finals after fielding an ineligible player in last Friday night’s first semi-final against Devonport.

The result of the match has been overturned, meaning Devonport will now play Penguin in this Friday night’s preliminary final at Girdlestone Park at East Devonport.

An investigation by the NWFL found three Robins’ players were wrongly listed on team sheets in rounds 15 and 16, with two of the three players not having played enough matches this season to qualify to play in the finals.

The league found the players weren’t on the ground or on the bench for the entirety of the match, which is a breach of the NWFL rules.

One of the ineligible trio played in last week’s semi-final.

  • The Renmark Football Club breached rules by selecting a footballer to play both A-grade and B-grade semi-finals
  • The club was fined $5,000 and had four premiership points deducted from its 2023 season
  • The Riverland Football League says the penalty is important to "set a standard" for the future

A summary of the penalties is as follows:

  • $26,500 fine ($9,500 of which is suspended)
  • Limited to a total of four points allocated under the Approved Player Points System (APPS) in both season 2024 and 2025
  • Loss of 8 premiership points in 2023 and 2024 (four points per year).

Happened in 1934 when Huonville won the Huon Football Association premiership against Kermandie, but unfortunately Huonville had played an ineligible player in the grand final and were stripped of the premiership and it was later awarded to Kermandie.
