It says on the AFL site that Peter Sumich has been named WCE Assistant Coach. No detail yet, just the headline. That will annoy the Dockers as he will have a good knowledge of their players after coaching South.

The momentum builds..........

Ahhh i hope thats true as it looked like we would again have a little tussle with Freo for his services but we nce again have come out on top. Sumich McKenna and Whoosha, i think we should bring in Louie, Mainy and Kemp and we'll be right :D

Hooray! Suma returns home :)

From the WCE Website:

"DUAL West Coast Eagles premiership hero
Peter Sumich has today accepted a three-year deal as an assistant coach to close friend John Worsfold.

Sumich, who kicked more than 500 goals in a decorated career which saw him play 150 games at a time when he was a central figure in the club’s halcyon days, has coached South Fremantle for the last two seasons.

He is held in the highest regard by the Bulldogs, having taken them to the grand final this season.

The dynamic left-footer, who often gathered possession totals worthy of a midfielder when playing at full-forward, was also feted by Fremantle as that club strives to build an alliance with South similar to that enjoyed by the West Coast Eagles and East Perth.

“It’s great to be back home,” Sumich said today. “I have watched from a distance in the last few years and it has been difficult to see the West Coast Eagles struggling.

“I’m excited at the opportunity to play a role in helping the club return to a position of power. I look forward to working with John and the other assistant coaches and we are confident we can turn this situation around.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching South Fremantle and will always value the opportunities they gave me, both as a player and a coach.

“The West Coast Eagles have an exciting young list and it will be great to see a lot of those players evolve and mature. We have a couple of early picks in the national draft next month and that will add further quality to the squad.

“I think this club is on the brink of some exciting times and I would urge all those West Coast supporters to get behind the club as we take those steps forward.”

West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said he was delighted to welcome Sumich back to the fold.

“Peter played a significant role in a wonderful era for this football club,” Nisbett said. “He was a great player and now he can wield an influence on a young squad which we expect to develop over the next few seasons into an outstanding group of players.”

In other appointments within the club structure, former Claremont wingman Dalton Gooding has been appointed as vice-chairman of the club while former Olympian Deane Pieters has been appointed as marketing manager.

Pieters has worked at the club for the last 18 months and replaces Ross Nicholas, who has made a significant contribution to the club in the last 14 years. Nicholas has resigned and will move to the Gold Coast next week, although he will remain attached to the West Coast Eagles as a consultant."

Seems these so called "Fremantle Boy" links mean naught to ex WCE players. You can take Freo out of the boys, but the Eagles remain in their hearts...

Welcome back Peter

I can hardly wait for next season. The Eagles have provided us with every reason to be excited about our prospects for next season. Whilst I am patient and will not expect to much in 2002 I think the future of our team is in good hands.

To think that Suma is coming home really jams it up Brad Hardie. I felt like throwing up last night listening to his radio show. He was saying how more beneficial it would be for Suma to go to the Dockers and stay with South Freo. Why would Suma who has aspirations at the highest level want to be a part time AFL Assistant? He will learn much more as Wooshas right hand man.

GO EAGLES!

What will Sumich teach the players? How to hook every kick or how to be as lazy as possible:D

Cheers

Sumich has been coaching South Freo for the past two seasons and got them in the grand final this year . He knows his stuff as a coach. I suspect WC will use him heavily as an assistant in our forward are as Woosha does not have so much experience up there (none at all actually) and will need the help.

Who does that make our assistant coachs now? Has lovell and German been sacked yet?

BTW, with your nickname, you're not really Brad Hardie, are you?

*chuckles* you really should go into stand up comedy VoR! I love your work :)

phatandphreaky, you obviously missed the fact that Suma was the first left footer in AFL/VFL history to kick 100 goals in a season and that he took South Fremantle to a grand final this year. He seems to have more football brains then you do.

Hi again guys & gals!

Good to hear Peter Sumich has been appointed West Coast's assistant coach! With such legends as John Worsfold & Peter Sumich at the helm - and Ben Cousins as Captain - things are certainly looking up for the team, the football public, and us - the vital fans!

Im already looking forward to next season - where West Coast will be rocking u in 2002!

Catch ya's later!

Journo Jo Cuzzy :)

I'm sorry but Woosha, Bluey, Monkey and now Suma in the coaches arena might seem like a dream come true but it all could lead to some fractured friendships amongst that lot. If things dont go the way they want them to then it could all turn to $hite!

Get a life mate. I was having a bit of fun, something that you obviously missed, lighten up and chill out.

And btw yes i did miss the fact that "he took South Fremantle to a grand final" , 3rd rate leagues in 3rd rate states don't really interest me. :D

Chill guys! I was going to make a light hearted comment about Sumich myself....
Pretty much all WCE supporters joke about Suma, but most are well aware of what he did actually achieve. I've always used Suma's career as an example of how fickle WC supporters can be - at games when he wasn't on fire I'd regularly find myself defending him to those around me - yet the next week he'd be getting them in and the same people suddenly loved him.

Maybe Wilson will be Sumich's first 'project'! ;)

Very young coaching panel, maybe Wiley should be kept on for a bit of experience?

I think Wiley being kept on was one of Woosha's conditions on accepting the job.....
