Suns in the Media - Part II

All clubs will have a 3,5,10 year plan that includes x premierships and x off field growth depending on where the list is at. Few achieve it, but it’s there.

Bob was just silly enough to mention it to one of the leeches during a dead time of the year. (Unless they want the heat for some reason).

In our case, the current chairman making public statements about club expectations is a good thing.

We don't have the local media setting expectations for us, putting us under the pump when we underperform or bigging us up when we do play well.

We also don't have expectations based on past performance. The Lions, Swans and Giants have all been in grand finals in the last 5 years, plus multiple prelims. No one needs to hear that the goal for these 3 northern teams is to win a flag, that is just a given.

Fill the void, Bob.

It does not look like Bob actually said winning premiership by 2026. Certainly, ambition to play finals and to win premership but no deadline.
At least that's what Whiting reported, and Bob certainly did not say it on SEN this morning.

It's pretty obvious to me that we must play finals in next 2 years otherwise we are screwed again.

Although the Suns' leader hasn't gone as far as demanding or declaring a flag during Damien Hardwick's six-year contract as coach, East says it's an opportunity the club must seize for itself and the community.

He’s not wrong though. Turn Metricon into a fortress and make it intimidating for the opposition. Make every team dread having to play us at home cause of the noise!
Would love to experience it, but just can’t see it happening against the Melbourne clubs at least.

VIC supporters/local opposition fans are always going to buy out the single reserved tickets as soon as they come out and very few Gold Coast locals (non-members) are ever going to pay $50+ for a single ticket and get in early enough to beat them for a ticket. We’ve priced out the casual GC locals.

Unless we can get to like 20,000 full season members coming every week, which would be incredible.

The AFL house will be hoping we can keep growing and soon get 15-20k most weeks (rather than 10-15k), regardless of which team each person in the crowd may be supporting.

Getting around 70% of that as pure Suns supporters would be massive though.

Sustained on-field performance is the last thing required. Should see a solid uptick from that alone.

Gold Coast this week announced the opening of a second childcare centre to boost earning capacity with East also commissioning former Suns chairman John Witheriff to look at improved transport links to the club’s Metricon Stadium venue.
For anyone that's not aware, John Witheriff is the current G:Link (Gold Coast trams) Chairman. This may well be the first step in us securing that elusive light rail spur line from Broadbeach to Nerang train station with a stop at our stadium along the way.

I reckon a fair bit of it has to do with developing our fan culture as well. The majority of Suns fans I see at home games are fairly quiet for most of the game but there have been moments where we've really shown our voice and that Noah Anderson goal after the siren was one of them. Can confirm for anyone that wasn't there that night that it was LOUD when Noz's kick sailed through the big sticks and it's obviously a moment that still sticks out for Dimma due to the noise that was produced.

Another one that comes to mind was when we played the defending premiers Melbourne in round 2 of the 2022 season and we were right with them for most of the fourth quarter until few questionable late umpiring decisions looked like they cost us a famous victory over the Dees. I distinctly remember how put off the Melbourne players seemed by the noise and pressure that our fans were creating in that fourth quarter. That was just a taste of what we as a fanbase/city are capable of if we can start using our voices to our advantage. I'm certain that a team like Collingwood wouldn't win nearly as many games as they have in their history if it wasn't for their rabid fanbase that always shows up in droves and are always loud.

You cannot underestimate how intimidating that can be for opposition players and how much of an edge that gives a team like the Pies. It's something we rarely see on the GC, but I hope it's something that we as a fanbase really start to harness over the next few years with Dimma at the helm. They've set the goal of 70% attendees being Suns supporters at each home match so if we're to assume that our home crowd average grows to around 20k then we need at least 14k Suns supporters showing up to every home game and (hopefully) making a lot of noise. This is absolutely achievable and, IMO, necessary for us to reach the mountain top.

Some 2023 stats are damning.

12th-best attack
5th-worst defence
16th in the league for disposals
15th for tackles
14th for inside 50s
15th for marks inside 50

I doubt Atkins and Ellis will play in defence.

BEST 22
B:
Wil Powell, Sam Collins, Mac Andrew
HB: Brandon Ellis, Charlie Ballard, Rory Atkins
C: Sam Flanders, Matt Rowell, Brayden Fiorini
HF: Ben Ainsworth, Jack Lukosius, Bailey Humphrey
F: Levi Casboult, Ben King, Malcolm Rosas
R: Jarrod Witts, Noah Anderson, Touk Miller
Inter: David Swallow, Sean Lemmens, Nick Holman, Darcy Macpherson
Emerg: Connor Budarick, Joel Jeffrey, Ben Long, Hewago Oea

PS hype has been Budarick/Uwland/Sexton possibilities in defence. Agree about Ellis, he will be needed on the wing.

The bang it on the boot gameplan is at fault for alot of those stats. It makes it harder to be effective in attack, lowers the number of disposals and once the opposition marks it it puts the defence under pressure. Considering rowelly had the most tackles ever in a season it doesn't read well for the rest of them, we need a bit more mongrel to take the load off one man.

Tackling is a really disappointing stat. It surprised me. We need some serious improvement in most aspects of the game. Here comes Dimma to the rescue. I hope I am wrong but it may take more than one off-season. The wings are issue.

Be amazed if the tackling stat didn't improve. Dimma is all about pressure, he won't tolerate blokes not giving 100%.

And a few players have mentioned this new game plan they are basing their system on pressure
