I was just wondering, how would you rank the interstate clubs in terms of how much support/how many supporters they have in Melbourne?

I'm a transplant from Perth, been here 3-4 years, and every time I go to a game here, I'm surprised at the number of Eagles supporters. At some games, like say the Dogs or Saints, it almost feels like a third at least. I mean there are enough fans that the crowd isn't totally against the Eagles, and they have plenty of people cheering for them.

I'm not sure how the other teams would compare. Would the Crows have more or less? Adelaide is closer but has a smaller population. I remember going to the 2005 PF final, West Coast vs Adelaide, and you could literally see the visible Crows fans on a hand, I thought it was weird how few there were. This was also during the height of the mining boom, so quite a few from SA here.

I would assume the Eagles, Crows and Swans would have the largest contingent. I couldn't rank them, or if there was a reliable way of doing so. A lot of supporters in Victoria aren't members. I assume the Lions would have a lot of old Fitzroy supporters, and a few Queenslanders and others. Freo and Port would probably come after. And of course GWS and Gold Coast way back, haha. I did see someone wearing a Giant's jacket here in Footscray though.

If you take out Brisbane/Sydney with their historic victoria connections then the most supporters would be Adelaide. I know quite a few Adelaide supporters who would cram a car on a Friday and drive down to catch their side play as well as 2-3 other games at the MCG/Etihad.

Also I believe the SANFL members have a reciprocol rights agreement to get seats in the AFL members area thats why you see quite a few on the outer wing when the Crows play in Melbourne.

Could figure it out quite easily with stats probably

Since 1997
Team - docklands - mcg
Sydney - 35k - 40k
Brisbane - 30k - 33k
West coast - 30k - 33k
Adelaide - 29k - 31k
Port Adelaide - 25k - 25k
Fremantle - 24k - 26k
Gold Coast - 23k - 25k
Gws - 19k - 26k

So you could easily say
1- Sydney
Daylight
2/3 - Brisbane, west coast
4 - Adelaide
Daylight
5/6 - port, freo
7 - Gold Coast
8 - gws

Have definitely felt at a couple of games in Melbourne that the Crows crowd has felt close to parity against the opposition

But I'm talking North Melbourne, St Kilda, Footscray in years when they aren't playing well

Adelaide easily gets the most to games. Sydney has a good turnout but I think the Crows push them in terms of people at the games. I reckon 70% of Crows fans at Melbourne games are in the city for the weekend, whereas a majority of the Sydney fans are actually from Melbs and are South Melbourne fans.

Adelaide gets huge numbers.

This is actually backed up statistically, kudos. Most of the other posts in here are just conjecture.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm curious as to any specific games you can point out where it felt that way.

i've been to some crows games over here against the dogs and saints in particular where it's felt like we've almost had a 50/50 share of the crowd

This. There's always been hoards of them, even back in 1991. Definitely the loudest supporter group as well.
