Swans told to end COLA - OR be banned from trading in players for 2 years

What happens if we want to (hypothetically) trade Sam Reid (on big coin) for someone on less coin? Is that not allowed?
We should be able to trade, if we run into salary cap trouble down the road than that's what we'll have to deal with- but banning us from participating in tradeweek is totally unfair (COLA is going/gone so now the Swans are disadvantaged compared to rest of comp). Fact.
Can anyone name another professional sport that adds, changes and makes up rules as they go? Now this, first Essendon/Port thing. Pretty Amateur.

I assume COLA applies to the entire length of contracts signed before the cutoff date? Stops them from putting together another half a dozen COLA subsidised 10 year deals
Happy as it screws Sydney but couldn't the AFL just remove the COLA if they wanted
Are you glad the AFL had the balls to open up the avenue of Essendon being compensated for Ryder leaving without Port Adelaide having to do a proper trade for him?
Theirs a difference between making strong and good decisions- to making stupid decisions based on carelessness or past mistakes.

Ballsy would be eradicating it immediately, if the AFL deem that to be the "right" thing to do. To potentially get rid of it in this fashion screams of being scared of being criticised for making a decision and thus they put the onus on the Swans to effectively make it for them.
Sydney has been told it cannot trade any players into the club this year or next unless the club is prepared to bring about an instant end to the cost of living allowance.
The Swans are extremely unhappy with the AFL directive, which also prevents the club from recruiting any restricted or unrestricted free agents to the club before the end of 2017.
It means the club will only be able to replace a player who seeks a trade out of the club with a draft pick or picks.

Whatever your thoughts on COLA how can the AFL punish a team that followed the rules?
And this isn't a minor punishment, this is about as extreme as it gets. Teams that have lied and cheated have been punished less than this.

Yes, it certainly is out of the blue, but a pretty logical and fair decision. Can't wait to hear the bleating from the AFL love child and their whingeing supporters.

No ballsy wouldn't be eradicating it immediately. It's very simple, if they don't want COLA anymore, don't allow it on new contracts. But Sydney shouldn't be punished for following the rules and that is what has happened here and it is what would happen if they got rid of immediately.
