The List. It has its own thread now.
Be gentle. I'm still developing this little gem....after 5 years.
I will publish this every week after teams are announced.
All the stats will be updated from footywire.
All unavailability will be updated from the Swans injury update(includes unavailability other than injury). Also includes estimated number of weeks out of action.
Here is where I'm at.

Things I'm working on
  • I'm thinking of putting coaches votes in the space at the top left hand corner. Say the top six listed in order. Something like that. Let me know what you think. I don't want Brownlow votes as they don't include every player equally. This is about the Swans. Is there a better weekly measure to track how our players rate?
  • BOG or something like that for each round. Sheldrick already won round 1. Something like that.
  • Last 5 results against the team we are playing next. Not sure.
  • Any ideas?

Just noting you are a legend and thank you p.s. for your contribution. Thank you for the time you spend to bring cheer to follow supporters. p.s. sorry my phone is buggering up formatting on the forum of late.

Four extremely minor nitpicks:

Firstly, you misspelled Corey Warner

Second, I think in the Home and Away section that Sydney's score should always be on the left regardless of who's home game it is.

Third, the 23rd man section should get its own colour

Fourth, Clarke should be listed as a forward

Should be a Google Sheet

Great work rusty!

Rather than coaches votes I would suggest using Champion data points from the last X number of rounds. Coaches votes is also good but everyone will get Champion data ratings but not everyone gets coaches votes.

Thanks for the update Rusty. Love this resource as a handy guide of the entire list makeup. Only note, and all subjective, but would be surprised if a top 22/23 included the two rucks in Hickey and Ladhams along with the three tall/key forwards ... Buddy, Reid, Logan. Bit top heavy for mine.

No, but Champion Data ratings come from Stats alone. That is not necessarily where the best play is. For instance, Parker gets 30, 10 of them go to opponents, batting at 66% whereas Gulden gets 20 at 100%. Who is more valuable? Are they both equal? To me it has to have a component of seeing the game on it's merits as well as stats

It's true that Champion Data comes from stats alone but they use quite sophisticated stats - they value disposals differently according to whether they are effective or not, whether they are part of a scoring chain or not, where in the ground they happen etc. etc. So, for example a successful kick inside 50 is valued much more than a sideways chip to a teammate, let alone an up and under that gets marked by the oppo.

First of all I will admit I make mistakes.
Second, I appreciate it when you let me know what they are straight away. I appreciate that.
I go out on a limb and rate players in different positions based upon my own perspective.

A bit of history.
I only became a fan of AFL in the late eighties only because I worked with a gorgeous blonde who loved the Swans. She introduced me to the Swans. Previously I was a rugby league fan. Unfortunately I needed to moved to Victoria but fortunately that culminated in me becoming a fanatical Swans fan.
I love the Swans. As you all know now my nephew is currently training with the Swans. He will play in the VFL this year. He did not make it to the AFL. It was his dream.

I did not grow up with AFL. In NSW that is pretty impossible back when I was a kid. I was pretty good at most sports. I represented schools and regions and things, but I never took it seriously. I think I never took anything seriously. I had ability but I was lazy. I took it for granted. But I have no regrets. I had no amitions for becoming a professional sportsman. The repetition of weights and all of that would bore me.

A long story short. I came to Victoria. I did not understand AFL. I did not understand the list composition. Main list, Cat A Cat B, draft, rookie draft, mid season draft etc I reckon I still only understand 90%.

So. I decided to create an Excel spreadsheet and build my version of what the Swans list looked like in my opinion. So that I could understand. In the initial years I changed things and it became clear to me. I understood the list. Basicly the Best 22 has to have a mirror depth. So that in the event of unavailability we have a player to step up and play. But that is simplictic. There is much more going on as players play multiple positions and sometimes end up in different positions to where they where drafted.

So we have where we are today. I have a pictorial of what I think our list composition is.
I look forward to discussion about the list and the categories(DEF, MID, RUC, FOR) as I have designated them. I expect even the Swans have not settled on positions of some players.

Who is available for selection in what position every week has conjecture. When you can see the list as I have developed, the you can see the possibilities.

I think the real benefit of what I have developed, and how it is portrayed is that you can see the possibilities. I will show injuries, suspensions, retirements etc. You will see the best 22. Then you will see who missed out and who is available and unavailable and why. At a glance.

Back to Max
First: I will fix that
Second: I agree. I confused myself when I looked at the first three fake scores I put in.
Third. 23rd man will be the colour of the position of the player that fills that position. At this stage. I may change my mind before the season starts. I never considered this. Thankyou for the idea.
Fourth. I put the players in the positions that I think they are. I recognise that Clarke played a major role in our surge to the Grand Final. But I also think that with Sheldrick, Konstanty, Hall-Kahan etc that Clarke has competition. He did not have that level of competition last year.

I think where I have "labelled a player in a certain position" will become the main source of conjecture in this thread. And that is good. Lots of discussion about players best position.

I will post the list after the sides are annouced each week, including the 23rd man. Also I will have provided an update of unavailability from the Swans injury update weekly which will show the reason for unavailability and number of weeks out.

I just want to thank you for your input. I will make changes as a result.

The best 22/23 will be whatever is announced each week. I have no control over that. I will just report who is in the side.
The rest of the players will be depth. In that depth I can delineate why and how many weeks players are out. The rest of the depth are the players that missed out.
