Any time in Freo history that we have been legit good (2006, 2012-14) we have employed a tagger to great effect. Matt/Josh Carr, Crowley. It is part of FFC DNA.

Now, apparently Young was playing as a tagger of some sort on Bont yesterday.

1. It failed on a spectacular scale if true,
2. Employing your only midfielder with elite offensive skills as a defensive tagger is ridiculous.

So IMO we need a new Crowley/Matt Car, a big bodied mid that can run all day both ways and willing to sacrifice their own game for the greater good.

Do we have one of those in the WAFL? We actually do.

Struggling to think who that player is in the WAFL tbh.

Think it’s possibly something we need to look at though. A 190cm elite runner would be handy but someone with those attributes is probably worth a second rounder at the draft if their skills are complete garbage, more if they’re half decent.

Ok I was thinking Erasmus, but you could equally choose Banfield - they’re a similar size and similar athletes. Both could run all day with an oppo gun mid I think. Erasmus is much more inside and less 1 sided than Banners, but Banners has the Crowley esque knack for scoring a goal which was a valuable part of his game.

Erasmus would be worth a try as a tagger, nothing to lose as we couldn't be any worse.

Use Banfield to tag the main distributor out of the back half, he can also bob up and create/score a goal or two. Please for the love of god do not use the hard midfield tag, we should be trying to win that area not nullify the opposition. Young, Serong and Bray should be GETTING the tag not worrying about who to remove from the midfield to try and stop one player.

It seems to have worked for other teams recently.

Yes, we lost by 60+ points but we might've been a chance of winning if we shut down Bontempelli as well as Brisbane did. He was almost that damaging on Saturday.

Did you not watch us in 2013? Other teams have good players as well!, part of being the best midfield is taking out their guns and allowing our guns to dominate.

I think even if we tried totally to clamped down on Bont, and even if it was successful they had other mids who were off the leash

Main difference from last time we played them was libba.. forgot whether Richards was playing but he is now progressed as a mid . Also Treloar isn't the best but unmanned he can still accumulate

Banfield. His tank is underrated, fast and uses it well.

Or maybe JOM? He seems to be preferred to Erasmus, Brodie but hardly been damaging with the ball. If the coaches value him so much, why not just throw him on ball as a tagger?

Liberatore is the right amount both ways. Bullies off the ball then asserts his dominance with the ball. None of Serong, Brayshaw, Young have that.
Sorry but being a midfielder today still means have to work both ways.
Look at Collingwood. They’re pretty underrated in that Crisp, Pendlebury, De Goey, McCreery work defensively.

Bont is hard to tag big, strong, agile has a tank. Not sure we have anyone that can match those those qualities to shut him down for 4 quarters. Young is closest but he got sliced and diced

Not sure he could of tagged Bont. But wouldn't have minded just giving banners a go in the centre bounce for a few. Think his deft touches/ knock on plus quick handballs are good

If Switkowski gets a shot, make sense to add someone in like Banfield.

Aish did a great job at times last season. Seems like the coaches want to avoid that. He was struggling for touches as well.

I totally agree. Bodying up on a midfielder at stoppages is fine, doing what Windhager does is IMO a complete waste of time. Using Banfield as an example to hard tag a mid is going to be a huge net negative for us.
