Pick 1 isnt guaranteed to be an elite player. It just gives you the a better CHANCE at landing an elite player.
you could argue it gives you a worse chance
1 extra dud in the pool
higher chances at picking a dud.

Except if instead of hindsight some of us were very vocal that the club should be trading up at the time and were despondant when they failed to do so having watched port who started with a weaker draft hand move right on up to get that player they craved
The only flaw in that argument is it's fine to say we needed to trade up, but what if there were no sellers and they all wanted to keep their picks. I can have $500k and decide to buy a 51 Penfolds Grange. But if the guys who have the wine don't want to sell it don't matter that I want it.

true..but considering we started with a better draft hand than port, we knew years out that this was a highly rated draft with some very highly rated SA lads etc AND port showed that for less they were able to get into the top 6, there really was no other excuse for us not to have got in first other than total and utter incompetence. If port or anyone else had NOT been able to trade up into the top 6 of that draft and then move higher, I would agree with your point

They did have to trade out Wingard and Polec as well to get their draft hand.

Wingard, Polec, Pittard, 11, 23, 30 -> Rozee, Butter, Duursma and Burton.

It was a bold play, but they gave up a lot for it.

But if you offer $500k and somebody comes over the top with $800k you don't get it. It was well noted the price Powa paid at the time and it's still not clear if they over paid.

but port paid the following for pick 6

THURSDAY OCTOBER 11

Fremantle trades Pick 6 and 2019 third-round pick to Port Adelaide for Pick 11, 23, 30 and 49.

now if we had offered picks 8 & 13 for that pick 6, which group of picks do you think holds more value and we most certainly could have offered those picks as we already had them - along with 16, 21 and another 20's pick from memory

Do you? I don't, it'll be the primary 3 with the remaining half a unit spread between him, Schoey, Pedlar, Berry and even Seed. A draftee just doesn't walk into our club and dislodge an existing starting midfielder, pick 1 or otherwise.
Think your sarcasm detection meter is broken

It was going to take another first rounder near Jones' pick to get St Kilda's first according to Gallagher.
he did. But say we had offered pick 8 & 16 for Brisbane's pick 6 (that would have been a better offer than ports). Pick 6 would have secured one of Rozee, B King or B Smith. Could pick 6 and pick 13 or 21 got to pick 4? How about pick 3 maybe?. But as we never bothered to have a plan B strategy to try and trade up it is a moot point

Think you need to go back and look at all the trades, you missed half. that wasn't even the final trade only one of a few.

I think it's about getting them in the one spot where they'll only have to deal with one government and no border crossing rules. Pretty logical move.
I’m assuming they can at least train in Melbourne

I find the whole thing to be a moot point when Port, despite their early song and dance about Rozee, traded up past Ben King who could well have been the foil they needed for Dixon. Won't win the flag this year largely because of it.
