A man who has been charged with 22 domestic violence offences against his estranged partner who was found dead in May has been released on bail.
The 28-year-old appeared in court via audiovisual link from prison, facing a slew of domestic violence charges after his estranged partner Tatiana “Tania” Dokhotaru was found dead in a Liverpool apartment on May 27. He has not been charged over her death.
Mr Zayat’s defence barrister Ertunc Ozen SC told the court that his client discovered the 28-year-old’s body at the Norfolk St unit.
He was arrested at the scene and charged with the 22 offences, including choking, intimidation, breaching an AVO, assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault and destroying or damaging property. He has remained in custody on remand since his arrest.
The court was told Mr Zayat was at Ms Dokhotaru’s home 20 hours before she was found dead, and the pair had an argument.
Police allege Mr Zayat destroyed her TV while breaching an AVO and causing fear.
The court heard Ms Dokhotaru made a Triple-0 call the night before she was found dead and alleged that she was being assaulted.
NSW Police said she did not leave her home address, while the database had different addresses attached to her phone number, meaning they couldn’t find her among the 297 apartments.
Mr Ozen said it was “quite unusual” police were not able to find her apartment given there was an interim Apprehended Violence Order in place.
