My friend over in England named her son that and I just.... I think dog whenever I hear that name, I think its awful for a human.

Recently a friend of my mum's passed away. All my life I thought her name was Vee. I've now found out that her name was actually Venus but she hated it so just called herself Vee. I can see a lot of people with the names mentioned in this thread doing this.

We saw a bit of this in my family - mostly in the boomer and older generations. The first name would be some "traditional family" name enforced on the birthing parents by some bossy matriarch, but the kid would always be known by some other name.

For example I had an uncle named "Richard", but he was always just called "Les" which was his middle name. A bunch of people at his funeral found out his actual name was Richard for the first time!
