Toast The Barassi Legacy

I was in the Shed yesterday looking at the Nmfc Team of last century and noted Pagan was our Coach of the Century Team.

It got me thinking about the RDB Legacy.

Pagan played under RDB and went on to Coach Flags.

Longmire played under Pagan and won a Flag.

What others are there?
Simpson, Clarkson and Hardwick also played under Pagan. Many other flag coaches played under Barassi or played under someone who played under him, don't remember them by heart. Malcolm Blight is one, and Simon Goodwin played under him.

These players played under RDB and coached a flag

Paul Roos
Robert Walls
Malcolm Blight
Alex Jesaulenko
John Nicholls
Denis Pagan

Then you have the one step removed like
Pagan
  • Simpson
  • Hardwick
  • Clarkson
  • Longmire

Blight
- Goodwin

What is kinda (well nerdily) interesting is the main heritage for successfull coaches seems to be either RDB, Hawthorn, or the Richmond side of the 70s.

So of the last 15 flags 11 were won by coaches who played under pagan at some level or worked with him as an assistant. Those coaches were Clarko, Horse, Simmo, Hardwick and Bomber Thompson.

I mentioned this on the main board on the priority pick thread and people said I was delusional.

That's the 11.

Every premiership coach since 1966 was either Barassi, Jeans, Hafey or Kennedy. Or someone who was coached by Barassi, Jeans, Hafey or Kennedy. Or third generation - Someone who coached by someone who was coached by Barassi, Jeans, Hafey or Kennedy.

Now that the four 'grandparents' are all gone, it would be fitting that the chain is broken by Chris Fagan, who never played VFL/AFL at all. (But played in Tassie under Paul Sproule, who was coached by Hafey)

Can agree with the cup sentiment, but for some strange reason l don't think it works.
Are we stealing the concept from other sports ? I'm thinking the " Lombardi " specifically. My ignorance precludes from knowing any others

Some great non-football stories coming out about the great man.

What an amazing life.
