And in more signings news. Apparently Christian Zapata is close to a move to LFC. Id welcome him, it's a bit from left field as we havent been linked to him at all. Marveuax is also apparently all but signed for free. Decent squad player. We still need that marquee wide player to come in. And that isnt Marveuax or Downing.

A player I really dont rate. Hes William Gallas like, but just a poorer version. Udinese play a 3 man defense and while hes a great attacking defender hes prone to the odd error/defensive lapse. IMO hes also way too poor in the air to partner a guy like Agger. Hes a Agger replacement as opposed to a Agger partner IMO. A strange signing

i'm sure we didn't waste six full months of exclusively trying to wrap up the Marveaux deal without looking at one other player

Your deadset pulling the piss if you think that 4-2-3-1 garbage system you played is anything like ones played by Liverpool/Valencia have and do. In the Villa system the front 3 had no defensive responsibilities whatsoever. Really apart from "dont fall over" the front 3 had a license to do whatever they wanted in a attacking sense, they drifted and switched positions all through the season. Downing played RW CM and LW in that front 3 during various stages of the year and never truly settled at the LW position

Mata has played the position his whole career, is more settled in the role and his stats suggest hes played the role better. Not to mention he also has the one thing IMO Downing hasnt and that is the long range passing game to go with his dribbling/crossing set skills.

Id also argue against the potential side of it Borgsta. If we were arguing over his potential he wouldnt have stats that outshine Downings by the age of 23.
you talk so much shit mate.
none of what you have said is true there. you obviously have NO IDEA what role Downing played last season, or how Villa played for that matter.

and downing played at boro and villa. mata has been at valencia his whole career.

mata might be better but at present, on the evidence of last season - being proven in the PL, and considering the price there isn't much difference in the singings.

Look we should be happy if we sign either Downing or Mata. Downing is a proven EPL performer, British (important with the new squad rules coming out) and versatile.

Mata obviously has more flair and has the potential to improve even further. We don't know if he will suit the hustle & bustle of the English game so there is more of an element of risk signing this guy.

I'm happy with either player, I don't think there is a club in the EPL that would not want to sign Downing so anyone who thinks that he is "beneath" Liverpool needs a reality check.

One other thing to consider is whether Villa will sell Downing to us if Young goes to the filth as expected. If I was the Villa president I wouldn't sell both but then again as AC can attest the American owners have proven to be incredibly tight fisted and may just want to cash in.

it wouldn't make sense, and shouldn't happen. downing has 2 years left on his contract, I think as well, so it's not urgent, urgent.

but I am concerned because 1) downing quite obviously wants to go 2) villa haven't been firm at any stage (having no manager doesn't help) in saying they won't sell young and downing.

good post btw mate. a well disected comparison on the strengths and weaknesses of either signing.

Christian Zapata has claimed that he is on the verge of signing with Liverpool. Good defender.

Thoughts?

If the price is right would be a great addition I would think.

Yeah Marveaux ended up at Newcastle. Im happy with that. He isnt a star and spends more time on the stretcher than Owen. Would only ever have been a squad player anyways. We should just sign Downing and Mata. Downing can pretty much play anywhere across the midfield anyways.

So the Marveaux saga has finally ended, it seems he had a medical with Liverpool and failed, denied that he failed said medical and couldn't agree on terms and then ends up at Newcastle United a few days later.

He could of possibly been a good signing, but really he has had a lot of injuries of the past couple of years and I am glad that he has ended elsewhere. I don't want to risk another injury prone player on big wages.

It has also been announced on Valencia's website that they are playing a pre-season match against Liverpool at Anfield on August 6th.

Interesting...

A friendly? Something is definitely going on.

Maybe, but they have played pre season friendlies against English sides pretty much every year for 4 or 5 now.

If your looking at omens, they played City and David Silva last pre season, but we also played them a few years back without any transfers taking place.

Been on the phone to the other half of my family who live in Speke. Wickham rumored to be done deal and Mata strongly rumored to be announced on July 1st. Not sure if I believe the Mata rumor but Chopra is likely moving to Ipswich meaning the Wickham rumor is most likely true.

Like how KD is building for the future, we will almost certainly dominate the league in 3 to 4 years time. Next season should be a top 4 finish minimum plus FA Cup (not the worthless cup, that means nothing).

With the best youth academy in England currently and all of England's hottest young prospects going our way LFC have never been better placed to take their rightful spot as England's number #1 club.

They played us too before the start of the 09-10 season. Nothing came of it in terms of players moving our way.

Chopra signed with Ipswich like 3 weeks ago, but Ipswich have pretty deep pockets nowadays so that really means nothing.

As for apollo_creeds comments. Ah you went on a big rant last season explaining Downings versatility and how hes not just a LW, now hes just a LW. Make up your mind man
