Liverpool play their best football without Carroll.

The best thing for your clubs prospects and start to the season would be him getting injured again.

So much this.

Suarez taking the penalty over Charlie Adam is one of the more bewildering decisions of gameday one. Next time you concede a penalty Carragher should tap Reina on the shoulders and stand in goal for him

Would've been Suarez's doing as well.
An 'I'm taking it' sort of thing.

If you have a specialist penalty taker let the specialist penalty taker take the kick.

A onfield leader should of stepped in and suggest "Hey we have one of the best penalty takers in the free world 15 metres away wearing our shirt, why dont you step aside". Fact that no one did this suggests a lack of leadership and direction. Exact same thing happened at West Ham when Carlton Cole :)o) actually took a penalty. Its not a good sign really as far as on field leadership goes.

People knocking Carroll Carroll hasnt been properly fit in 6 months hasnt even had time to strike a partnership with either suarez or kuyt.
give him time he wasnt good last nite but we should of finished the match in the first half.
He will come good.....

I think you're missing the point re: Carroll. Even if he 'comes good', it doesn't necessarily mean Livepool will be much better off.

I'm sick of this already, it's the first game of the season and yeah big deal we drew, I'm not disappointed cause I know we can bounce back. It's these bloody big mouth Man United supporters who keep running their mouths that piss me off. YNWA forever!

Nice thought, but that's just not going to happen; too many people have already made their minds up that it was a terrible signing or simply don't like him and want him to fail.

Short of scoring 50 goals and providing 25 assists per season he won't have done enough.

Carroll is not in our best XI

We play route 1 when he's in, it's like a red rag at a bull called Carra to hoof it

Pretty much but Carroll forces route one by not really pressing wide and or making any runs. He just kind of stands there expecting the long ball nowadays which is fair enough considering hes had it his entire career nearly. Its too late now but its almost ideal to have a tall CM with heading ability in the middle of the 3 in the Tim Cahill mould. Maybe with two weapons as opposed to one ie. Kevin Nolan method, Carroll can free himself up a bit more

I thought the most bewildering decision was to not start Kuyt.

Starting Flano over Kelly was much worse.

With the condition of the players prior to the game he should have set up:

--------------- Reina
Kelly ---- Carra --- Agger --- Enrique
-------- Adam -------- Lucas
Kuyt -------- Meireles -------- Downing
-------------- Carroll

Bench: Doni, Flano, Henderson, Poulsen, Suarez, Ngog

To be fair, Suarez is a terrific penalty taker and Adam was on debut. Nerves on debut with the whole stadium watching him. Probably a good idea for Suarez to take it over Adam. But Suarez then took a woeful pen. We shouldnt have had this problem if Gerrard wasnt injured. That's leadership there. No arguments when he is on the pitch. Secondly, we also shouldnt have had this problem if KK had started DK. As Kuyt always takes pens and rightly puts them away when Gerrard isnt on the field.

Erm why would you drop Adam? He was one of our best players against Sunderland whilst you keep Henderson in the team. Hendo was very quiet and provided young Flanno with very little cover. I dont mind Carroll going to the bench as I believe Kuyt and Suarez play extremely well together. But why drop Adam. Leave Adam in the middle with Lucas and drop Henderson to the bench and play Meireles wide right. Not sure about Kelly at CB, I know he can play there, and very well but id prefer him at RB as I dont think Johnson will be fit anyways. Kelly, CarrAgger, Enrique.

All in all, pretty disappointing start to the season. We played very well in the first half and deserved our lead, but it was a worrying second half. We didnt look match fit. But 4 players on debut would also not have helped with team cohesion. Once they all get bedded in, I think we are a much better side than last season. Downing was quite good, Adam very good, Hendo very quiet and Enrique did nothing wrong, particularly considering he signed pretty much 24 hours before the game.

One thing we must do is get Aqua involved. The guy is flat out quality and should have at least been on the bench. How KK is going to involve Adam, Hendo and Meireles when Gerrard returns will be interesting. Lucas and Gerrard must play. Arsenal next week. New signings Gervinho is suspended. Cesc and Nasri wont play you wouldnt think, or could be sold by next week. Good time to get them, but weve never beaten them at Emirates IIRC.

Problem you're going to have with Adam against the better teams is that he offers nothing defensively. You can carry him against the weaker teams but I reckon he's going to be the one teams exploit going the other way.

Not sure what the point in Henderson is at the moment though, so probably not missing much if he sits on the bench.

Dont really buy this. Adam provides the same amount of defensive cover as any normal CM does. Certainly no more or no less then a Jordan Henderson. People mistake his slowness around the pitch as inability/lack of desire to track back and press the ball. Adam showed at his time with Blackpool that when called upon he was quite good defensively (ie. when holding on to leads/covering Craineys runs forward). Its just that in a 5 man midfield system and with such a strong DCM like David Vaughan was last season he was given a free reign much like Ashley Young was for Villa last season
