Sam Mitchell for Cale Hooker: Don't do it (please)

I just heard a rumour that we are considering trading Cale Hooker and a draft pick for Sam Mitchell who is upset at Hawthorn.

Don't know if it's true or not but it scares me. I feel we should not let go of Hooker under any circumstance. Is more than a capable CHB, his start to the season last year was exceptional.

Also feel he, Hurley and Pears can hold down the key posts in the backline...

At such a young age Hooker has shown more than I expected and think he is quite capable and will be a very good player.

Mitchell would be a good get, but perhaps only 3 good years of footy left, not worth it regardless of the short-term gain...

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

Surely not. Mitchell is 28 in a week..he has 2-3 years left in him and he's past his best. Still a great footballer, but not what we should be looking at. Fingers crossed

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

Hahaha sucked in. Essendon clearly wouldn't look at Sam Mitchell.

I'm not against trading Hooker but it'd be for someone that'll have a longer stay in Essendon colours such as Jordan Lewis - 4 years younger than Mitchell.

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

If were trading Hooker, give me Lewis.

Not Mitchell or Sewell.

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

Is he the player that Pelchen was talking about when he mentioned they are chasing a key backmen that had yet to be mentioned and it wasnt Tarrant. Good player to chase from the hawks.

Lewis for Hooker is a pretty even deal IMO. Maybe essendon would have to give something else, like a late draft pick.

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

Sam Mitchell will be turning 29 next year, his first year at the club if we were to pick him up. You must think Essendon can have a flag chance in the next 2-3 years.

Sam Mitchell will turn 29 when the season has finished and we have won our 17th flag. His birthday is next week.

Still i stated he will be turning 29 next year his first year at the club if picked. 30 in his second year, 31 in his 3rd year. By this time when hes 31 he will be no where near his best and it will put Essendon even further away from a flag by picking him up now. Would much prefer 7 years at of Lewis than 3 from Mitchell.

Mitchells also one of those players that cant play alot of other positions, when he passes his prime which will be in the next 2 years i cant see where he can be played after that. Its not like he can go forward as a target and i think he will become too slow for the midfield in 2-3 years time. If Essendon do this offer we deserve not to win a flag for the next 6-8 years. Poor decision.

Surely you dont think we can win a flag next year, have a look at our list mate. We have maybe one A grader and that can be argued.

Whoaaa easy tiger..

Firstly, his first year with us a player he will be 28, pure and simple..

Secondly, light up, I was not serious about us winning a flag next year. Unless we get Mitchell, in which case we will win the next 4! (again joking so calm down)..

Re: Don't trade Cale Hooker (please)

Would do that trade in a blink, considering its a football champion in Sam Mitchell, all rebuttal's aside.. But unfortunately in people's minds, old age is the key problem here.

There's a trend, where some current football teams have a need for wanting younger players, which I think has become over rated.. I think you take a big chance when you trade away (Or "Retire") older players to then pick up someone young from the draft. Surely it has its rewards but it also has mass flaws in the concept. i.e. Essendon in general in the past 3 years haven't really proven much at all "playing the kids".

In this case with Sam Mitchell, well for one I doubt he'd leave Hawthorn.. And secondly, we probably should look for someone that ticks over 27/28 years of ages in 2012/13 (Our projected years of success).. So therefore look for a midfielder someone around the age of 25/26 now..
