I think the Crows are doing the right thing from a list management point of view, and that's reclaiming it's culture and heritage.
What made the Crows special? What was it that was at the forefront when we won in 97 and 98?
It was that we were a default state team playing for state pride in the national competition.
We had a majority list of SA players, with a pride for playing for SA.
When we won the flags, it was the SA legend coach coming home to give us success.
That vein has been apart of our DNA and for a long time the club moved away from that. We had situations where there were many interstate clubs that had more SA players on their list than we did. It was almost like it was a deliberate action to move away from that heritage.

I have no doubt that the last five years has seen a list management strategy to get back to a core playing group who are SA born and bred, and also Crows supporters in the team.
You can't tell me that a kid playing for the team he idolised, in his home state, wearing the state colours, at home in front of his family and friends, isn't going to play better.
Look at Sydney, their best players are out of theiir academy.

if this draft goes as we think, bringing in both Draper and Welsh, we will have the following list of SA players.
Draper
Welsh
Fog
Thillthorpe
Rankine
Hinge
Michaelanny
Dawson
Pedler
Schoenberg
Cook
Milera
Dowling
Smith
Borlase
Burgess

It's been many a year since we have had that many SA kids on our list.

I'm interested in how many people think this is the right direction for the club, to focus on the top SA talent, and Crows supporters where possible, and the others who think it should play no role in our team moving forward, and you couldn't care if no players on the list were from SA.

Any list strategy that includes targeting SA players to some degree should only be in place to assist in winning a premiership. It should have nothing to do with 'heritage'.

I think in this day and age it's practical to consider the likelihood of losing good players and factor that into list management to some degree. It's worth noting that very recently we've selected Rachele and Curtin with top 10 picks, so we obviously aren't going gung ho and nor should we.

Given the pathetic culture of the AFL to accept and expect players to return to their home state I think its wise to have a focus on home grown talent, and if players are Crows supporters growing up that has to count for something. I am certainly not saying you forego the superior player but being homegrown and a Crows supporter to boot is worth something.

Yep, best available and back yourself and your system in to retain them.

How much better does this player need to be before you pick the local kid? 10%, 20% or do you have it as clear cut as best is best?

I know its hard to quantify but I would put more value on the home grown factor than an exceptional vertical leap in the combine

It's been proven that if we had taken SA players instead of Victorians at each of our picks, our side would be significantly worse

In fact the history of the draft shows, at least for top end players, that you are generally better off passing on the South Australian for the next highest rated Victorian midfielder or key forward instead.

Taking SA players is nice in theory for "heritage" reasons but we're a (supposedly) elite sporting club, so we should be making the best decisions to win premierships. Focusing on SA talent only is not making the best decisions.

Its a pro sport. the state they come from now should be regarded as meaningless. Take the best available at your selection to fill a need. Anyone talking state bias should be a priority doesnt understand the nature of professional sport.

Better strategy is bring them home later when proven, not usually that big a discrepancy in the cost draft picks wise required, more salary only. Rankine went higher than we paid .

It should be, 100% it should be, but its not.

Its only getting worse now with players not flinching at seeking an exit mid contract. There is an expectation that players will leave at some stage to return home, it feels there is more surprise when a player stays rather than leaves. Its been far too normalized by the media and fan base.

The only bias should be adjusting state rankings based on the quality of their development and competition the juniors play in. Lower standard junior league means it's easier to outperform the pack.

SA doesn't have a good enough track record of delivering elite talent at the top of the draft to give them an even ranking with Victoria

Probably better to base it on their performances at the U16's and more importantly the U18 Nationals. Also a factor can be their efforts as an underager at the U18 Nationals.

Most of the current top SA talent in the AFL had excellent Nationals campaigns.

I think it should be the key part of our identity and like the way we have targeted good SA players to come home.

I'm not SA at all costs in the draft - as i would hate to overlook an interstate star for a local plodder.

Bring back the kick a vic banners!

I'm not saying targeting SA kids who are worse than the interstate kids, I'm talking quality SA kids.

That's not what I said. I think we should factor in local to some degree.
Yes but it shouldn't be the only consideration. All things being equal, you'd go the local player. But if there is a player that is better than the local player, you go the better players every time.

An uber-talented list that was starting to blossom was at the forefront. Not any nonsense about state pride. It may have been a nice storyline, but let's be real, Adelaide squad was brimming with talented players on every line, to the point there are currently 6 AFL hall of famers in those squads (Riccuito, McLeod, Goodwin, Jarman, Bickley and Hart).

1997/1998 Adelaide was the Western Bulldogs of this generation. Uber-talented, inconsistent, and got hot when it mattered.

how much better though, what is the threshold?
How long is a piece of string? There are obviously metrics placed on each player (speed, agility, aerobic capacity, skills). It depends on your squads needs. Does that player have the needs you are looking for? Like I said, all things being equal, take the local player. But if your squad has particular needs, and the interstate player meets the metrics better than the local player, you'd take the interstate player every day.

I don't know about setting any targets about recruiting SA players but it would be nice if we could get the good ones when they come along. Bloody could have had Will Day or Kossie Pickett and we went with a Victorian who was a sour puss right from the moment he got drafted and wasn't even any good.

We should be looking at it as having a competitive advantage being one of two teams in a footy mad state, with a strong culture of football. We should also have the advantage of being a larger club than the other SA team.

I don't see why any of our main staff should be based in Victoria. That is a disadvantage, as 10 other teams already have a head start on us. We can't let a Lachie Neale or Corey Enright slip through the system.

We should be doing everything we can to advocate for the same advantages the NSW & QLD teams have in having an academy and first access to home grown talent.

We should be doing everything we can to advocate for equal funding for our junior development systems.

We should embrace the full history of footy in this state and the fact we were made to represent the SANFL and be the pride of South Australia.

We then bring in the best available talent. If that kid is from another state, so be it. But only after having full knowledge and intel of every player in SA.

Can anyone tell me why we wouldn’t have Rankine present the guernsey to our first draftee tonight??

Apparently it’s going to be NVB. Would any of the kids even know who he is..

I imagine it's more about honoring footballers who used to be it for your club (or who is available) than a kid knowing them.

I couldn't imagine too many knowing Lance Whitnall, Chris Johnson, Keith Grieg, Shannon Byrnes, Matthew Primus, Brett Kirk, Andrew Thompson or Justin Koschitzke either unless you were a massive fan of that club.
