Jennifer Ruth TANNER died on the 14th November 1984 at the Tanner family farm from two gunshots to the brain including one gunshot through each hand, between the index finger and thumb (webbing) as if she was in a defensive position. It's argued that Jennifer committed suicide and also argued she was murdered.
The main suspect for her murder is her brother-in-law, former detective Dennis Tanner who is also said to be associated with the killing of a New Zealand transsexual sex worker, Adele Bailey (disappeared 1978, St Kilda). Dennis Tanner knew Adele having once placed her under arrest. Adele’s remains were uncovered in a mine shaft at Bonnie Doon, behind the Tanner family’s farm.
A 1998 inquest found that Dennis Tanner had murdered Jennifer.
Former detective Dennis Tanner has been the subject of two murder investigations in the past 30 years, for burglary, firearm and false report charges after a search warrant was executed on his Williamstown home in February 2014. These charges were dropped with senior police deciding they would not authorise the brief of evidence, believing a court case was unlikely to succeed but keeping all investigations open.
