very loosely AFL related post but is anyone else watching the 20/20 tonight being played at the Gabba?
what's with the surface, it looks like my local footy ground. it's pretty much a disgrace and i couldn't see the lions being happy with it, not having much of a horticultural background but i reckon they'd be pushing shit uphill to have it afl standard for round 1.
anyone from brisbane know what's wrong with the surface?

It's been shit all summer, in both international and domestic matches. It's actually improved from what I saw the other night in the Qld v SA match. I think it's due to the massive storms they suffered late last year... you'll notice a certian part of the GABBA roof missing on your TV screen, which I also believe is storm related.

Problems with watering and a fungus have left the pitch in the state it is, should be fine for the footy season as not all of the grounds water will be dedicated to such a small area.

This is an AFL forum, and lets keep it that way. We may discuss the GABBA's surface when footy games start there.
Considering the AFL season is just around the corner, the surface of a AFL venue is a very relevant topic for discussion, especially when the surface has been below par for a while.

I'd imagine it would've been difficult to field tonight. Everytime the ball landed on the outfield it would bring up a chunk up dirt.

Hope they get it organised in about 2 months time !

I'd noticed that. I (and my kids) wondered why the hell anyone would design a ground with a big bite out of what looked like a roof that shold go all the way around.

Didn't even think of storm damage......thanks!

The ABC mentioned the fungus and the fact that the length is somewhat shorter for the cricket also makes it look a bit sick.

Say what? This discussion is entirely relevant to the AFL. The surface looked terrible apparently there is some kind of fungus. I imagine they have been clearing these areas. Hopefully cooler, drier weather will impede it?

i'm not sure what the fungus was but heals mentioned it on the commentary, to the brisbane supporters have the lions been training on it or have they been using alternate venues? i wouldn't think that the support staff would want the players do run through work on it, also would think the ground staff would want anyone on it??

The Lions do most of their training at Giffen Park,Coorparoo - a few kilometres down Stanley St. to the East.

Don't expect too much relief from rain before the start of the season - the long term rainfall averages are something like January 160mm....February 158mm...and March 141mm - and it looks like La Nina is still hanging around.

I certainly hope the state of the GABBA's surface improves. But footy is still quite a way away, and there should be plenty of time for it to be improved. After all, a cricket surface is vastly different from an AFL surface, as the surface of the whole ground must be good for AFL, where as in cricket it isn't as necessary, maybe that is why it is so bad. I am pretty sure that appropriate action will be taken.

And yeah, the reason I was originally annoyed by this thread is that i am sick to death of boring cricket on the news, then seeing more on an AFL forum didn't go down well.

After a second thought I know it is relevent to AFL.

If I remember I'm sure the surface was in the same shape about this time last year, maybe not quite as bad and it came back pretty well for football.

The surface looked shocking tonight, hopefully be right by round 1. Those storms have really hurt the Gabba.

Is the roof where it is missing being replaced or is a new look as the frame is totally gone?

so does that mean e can still discuss it??? or is it the end?

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
Ill never look into your eyes...again
