Thought that gd needs a thread dedicated to all the things that go with travelling around the world.

I think it will make an interesting thread if it used to ask fellow gd'ers about places around the world or the experiences that have happened to you when travelling.

I'm heading off to Thailand and Laos for 3 weeks in January. I was wondering if I could get some ideas of the places to go when in Thailand and Laos.

* I know there is stuff like this on the lifestyle board but lets be frank who posts on there?

Fire away.

General Discussion is to be worded in capitals thank you

I've already booked and paid for this tour.

If left to my own devices I would royally screw up a backpacking holiday through lack of planning, mainly by running out of money before I saw everything I wanted. So just having to get up, get on the bus and have it take me to my next destination is perfect for me

I think rossi is doing that (no stalker). I'm doing 3 weeks contiki and the rest whatever we want. We're only booking for hostels before xmas after that we should be able to get accommodation pretty easy (apparently )

Strong tour:thumbsu: It is a good way to see a lot of countries in a short period of time. You are going to have a sore head after. I was spent 3 weeks on one of these tours and got plastered every night, very little sleep, but its an awesome experience.

One of my friends did the same one this year and all of their pics and status' on facebook got me extremely jealous, so I decided to do it myself.

I'm not a massive drinker so I won't be getting smashed every night. I chose that one in the end because I couldn't find anything as cheap, as long or that saw as many places and it included Egypt which I would've tacked on the end anyway

Fair enough, you will have an awesome time regardless.

Sorted.

Depends on where you are going. Some hostels in Northern Europe may be closed at that time of year. I'd say it is worth your while booking hostels ahead for the big cities (especially Barcelona and Berlin).

I've had two trips to Europe, one on Eurail one on Renault Eurodrive for three months.

Some of the budget motel chains (like Ibis) can be good value, especially those with a large business clientele. They actually have cheaper rates on the weekend in some cases. After hosteling for a while it can be nice to have your own bathroom and a double bed for a couple of nights.

After I get my degree and get myself a bit of money, I'll be off to Scandinavia, and probably by extension. the rest of Europe . Scandinavia has always fascinated me the most, the beautiful environments, differing climate, its history/culture and all.

As far as Laos goes, Vang Vieng is a combination of the most fun and most dangerousness i've ever experienced. Total anarchy.

Vientiane is a shithole, don't bother but for a stop over. Luang Prubang is nice. Going on the Gibbon Experience is meant to be amazing.

Thailand....everyone goes to Phuket, Phi Phi, Ko Samui + the other islands, Bangkok and maybe Chang Mai. Those are the main areas.

Your stalking is accurate. We're doing all our own thing for 3 months.

We've decided to book around Christmas and New Year as well as when we get there but leave the rest as we go.

Good choice, I've been to Sweden and loved it. Great place and the people are very friendly, hot blonde chicks everywhere too, pretty expensive though especially when it comes to going out drinking. Wish I could have spent more time there travelling around Norway, Finland etc.

I reckon you're better off travelling around Europe doing your own thing rather than Contiki type package tours. Depends on what you want though, if you just want to get on the piss and pick up chicks then go Contiki, if you want to do some proper travelling then just go it alone.

USA for six/seven weeks, but it's not until this time next year. it was supposed to be this year but I had to postpone it due to finances. quietly looking forward to it. :)

In order of preferance, I want to do

1) Kenya (got to see the plains of the Sarrengetti during the great migrations, and see the Lions, Cheaters and Leopards at their finest)
2) USA (Love American Football, going to have to do a sport trip here
3) Peru (Manchu Picchu, got to see it, sounds amazing)
4) Eygpt (Got to see the pyramids and sphinx sometime)
5) France + Western Germany + Netherlands + England (I love my history, and ww2 in particular, got to see Normandy, Bastogne and get an understanding on the military tactics of the day)
6) Russia + Ukraine + Poland + Eastern Germany (so quite, communism didn't really lead to a centralised economy, so it's rural, and I beleive it wuold be an amazing place to relax - as well as learn about the Cossaks, and ww2 history and understanding in more detail)
7) Italy (c'mon, have to see Venice and Rome sometime in my life)

and finally, if development continues at the rate it is at the moment

8) Dubai (tallest buildings in the world, palm islands, world islands, maybe the globe around 1 of the palm islands, at a current rate, in 20 years, this place will be the most amazing place in the world)

I'm actually thinking a perfect trip could include

Adelaide ----> Hong Kong ----> Seoul ----> Vladivostok
trans siberian express to see Russia, then go to Moscow to see the Kremlin and other places, before St Petersburgh to see the old Romanov places of the early 20th century, then heading down south to see Ukraine, and the pleasant surroundings of the area (except Chernobyl), then see Poland to work to Berlin, before heading down to Eygpt to see everything there, Nile, Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, then I might go to Kenya and see the great vast plains of the Sarrengetti, then I might come back via Dubai

I can knock off 1, 4, 6 and 8 in my travel list in 1 big trip! :)
