Review The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Hawthorn Hawks

Long time lurker first time poster, I can except losses in a rebuild period. What I can't except is 5 years into a rebuild and still playing with the same midfield/senior players and showing no signs of improvement and other clubs leapfrogging us in their development. It's clear Nick's isn't the guy to take us to the next step, the question is wether the club is ruthless enough to move on knowing this or if we accept the same mediocrity through the next two seasons. I for one won't be renewing my membership next year with Nick's at the helm he clearly can't get the players up in critical contests.

When we struggle to find a single free option 90% of the time we have the ball, but then the opposition have free players everywhere as soon as we turn it over, there are only two possible excuses. Poor structure, and poor workrate. Or both, I guess.

That match was an embarrassment to both the coaches and the players.

wow we were smashed in the clearances today and lost contested possession.

The more I am reading, this is turning into a Nicks special, complete with a mini comeback after the game was out of reach.

Wonder how many people didnt see the game, saw 27 points and think, not to bad, 4 goals.

But the reality was so much worse.

At one point it was 10 goals to 2. We were 7 goals down well into the 4th quarter. It was a smashing from the get-go.

Welcome.

Not a bad first post either!

Yep, Nicks sucks!

I'm convinced it is both. At the very least it is evident that the team as a whole does not work hard enough.

Watching at the ground - Burgess was mainly playing up the ground, while Fog was deep. What kind of decision is this when Fog has clearly been so much better marking and using the ball up the ground, this year?

Sums up our coaching staff, really

So much poor today I can’t be bothered typing all of it

Good - Borlase, Sholl, Burgess was serviceable but do we really need 3 x glacial Key Forwards in Walker, Fog and Himmelberg? Also thought Jones was OK today.

Bad - Inside 50 differential. Hawks made F50 pressure their priority, applied pressure, and didn’t let us play smoothly out from the backline, causing repeat entries. Outcoached
  • Brayden Cook. Had registered ONE possession up until the end of the 3Q, where he proceeded to pull his finger out, impacting the game far too late. He can’t be a training cone for the best part of 3Q’s though..
  • Don’t let Crouch and Lairds stats deceive you into thinking they had decent games, they didn’t. Absolute garbage in the contest, and the majority of their disposals weren’t contested. Junk. I mentioned the ‘plodding’ of Laird the past few weeks, and he was at it again today…
  • Schoenberg (57% DE), Soligo (65% DE) Smith, Rachele huge concerns for the future, his ceiling looks very short, his appetite for repeat efforts isn’t there, and he doesn’t want to get stuck in.. , Fogarty contested marking..

Ugly - Selection. I know we came off a 99 point win, but we KNEW Hawks are second best in the comp for points scored from transition through their backline, and for their contested clearance work. Our F50 pressure, particularly without Rankine, and with Rachele doing his best training cone impression, is deplorable. I think we should have started with Berry to try and clamp down on exits from the contest..

Our list is in a terrible position

This is what I don't understand. Fog has always been a better player when he plays the tex linking forward role and roaming the top of the 50. As a natural midfielder, he is always more comfortable getting the ball and being able to run.

Good: Maybe the club can stop pretending we are any chance of making the finals this season now, and start prioritising development.

That has been the * problem!

There was a total lack of motivation from this team in the first half, they did not even care. Walker subbed off, he'll be rested next weekend.

You cannot expect to show up against a proud club like Hawthorn.

I also think it is time to play Tom Murray or this mid season draft is useless. Give him a go.
