Autopsy The King influences Umpires a win over North by 3 points... #jessiewhitesque

Shit way to win, but at the end of the day it was a deserved free kick and we needed some luck to finally go our way somewhere.

Some of our mids had okay games but absolutely smashed in the clearances again today. I have no idea what the answer to that is, but clearly neither do our coaching staff.

Anyway, we got the W and it seemed to mean a lot to the players. Lets hope it's enough of a spark to get some semblence of momentum into our season.

It's great to see fans cheering a clerical error. It takes me back to the 2020 season, where the tiniest green shoots of hope brought cheer to a perenially grey landscape. It was deja vu all over again in 2023 as we faced yet another Q4 collapse.

It turns out that though we may be the second worst team for kicking goals from set shots, we're the number one team for kicking goals from interchange infringements. Who knew?

I'm sure I wasn't the only Swans fan entertaining a side bet at $5.40 for a Norf win. Entertaining? I was throwing a party on Norf. I bet the house, the car, the kids and the missus on Norf. Feck, it seemed a cert, a sure thing. Of course, even a free on the goal line wasn't a certainty. Not with our set shot record. McLean was probably the only Swans forward with a better than 50:50 chance of squeezing it home from the goal line. As long as they didn't give the free to McLean....."Nooooo, not McLean...Give it to Ladhams", I howled. But Ladhams was nowhere to be found. He'd embraced another noble Swans tradition of big men leaving the field on a stretcher mid-game.

So Norf snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I can still hear the screams of "Daddy" as the black van drove off into the dark street with the wife, kids and title deeds to the house. "Damn you Norf interchange steward. You had one job", I cried out. As the van disappeared around the bend I thought, I shouldn't get too upset. They weren't even my family.

I thought we needed a new version of the club song, to reflect the 2023 Swans

Cheer, cheer a technical win
It may not be much but we can begin
To lift our noble faces high
To look our opponents in the eye

Whether the odds be great ($5.40) or be small ($1.16)
Technical wins are wins after all
Pray that we can win the flag
On technical victories

WE WAS ROBBED!
Surely reversing an interchange is AN INTERCHANGE. So yes, we was wobbed, but we was also the wobbers, stealing the game from under Norf noses.

Poor Clarkson, if that fiasco doesn't tip him over the edge nothing will. Was it a deliberate conspiracy by Ratten to turn Clarko into a drooling mess so Ratten can keep the coaching job?

Goldstein was a big factor yesterday.

The bloke is still a fine ruck & it was only McLean (when belatedly sent there) that came close to breaking even.

I’m just frustrated with Horse. Ladhams out & McAndrew getting overwhelmed - but the McLean move wasn’t made until the game was nearly gone.

In my view - a strategic clanger.

Just a reminder we won clearances in the Grand Final last year

People seem to choose to forget that
Surely not the centre clearances? Felt like we were watching Geelong motor out of there on repeat. If we won the clearance they would have been poor and sideway hack kicks rather than any clearances Geelong seemed to win.

We again cop a pantsing at clearances. This time from the worst team in the modern era.

The Chad and Parker, two of the three standard CB attendees, ended up getting @ lot of ball but this was in general player. The other standard attendee didn’t get the ball in clearances or in general play, but it seems that is not his role.

Even allowing our rucks are prolly in the bottom 6 of the Comp, surely our Mids must do better than they are.

Are our mids over rated or is our system woeful?
Its both system and personnel. We lack a ball winner in the mids, a libba, viney, t Mitchell type of player. In and under and handpassing to a Warner running through.

Parker is not this type of player, gulden shouldn’t be this player (too skilful and an attacking gun with ball in hand). Rowbottom attack on the man and ball is fantastic but he is not a ball winner, per se.

Would love to know whose role it is within the club.

Because we don’t have a ball winner at the club it seems to impact the system in the midfield.

What tends to happen is teams get a run on and we can’t stop their momentum. Prior to 6-6-6 rules, we would throw a spare in defence. These days the best way to stop momentum is to win centre clearances. We don’t have the type of player to win the crunch clearance consistently.

Therefore IMO our system needs to change or we need to trade for this type of player.

It was a terrible performance, but a win was essential. I honestly can't believe there are people calling for us to tank in round 10. That's just a shocking attitude that brings shame to its proponents. Ofc we won't win a flag this season, but that doesn't mean we down tools and play VFL kids with over half the season still to go. As if you'd even suggest that. While there's life, there's hope and we might just surprise Carlton on Friday and be right back in the mix for the 8.

Pretty sure the move was made 5 minutes (game time) into the last quarter, so 75% of the quarter still remaining. So doesn’t seem as late as you’re suggesting.

I remember as I read your post calling for it as North kicked the goal and at the very next centre bounce McLean was there (so I took mental note of it).

Gotta back the actual ruckman in at the start of the quarter but the move was appropriately made when it was obvious McAndrew could no longer compete.

Yesterday was prolly not the time but if McAndrew has sense he will get in touch with Goldy

Our clearances were better (or wasn't quite as shit) when McLean was in there, in general people/coaches don't value rucks enough, and while there's no doubt our centre clearance setups need to be better... having rucks who are warmed up garbage is not helping, put a Max Gawn in there and our clearance work wouldn't be as atrocious.

The best our stoppage work of recent time has been in 2021 when Hickey had a cracking year, and last year when Sam Reid was in there doing the rucking.
McAndrew was in his first game and still has a bit of work to do with his ruckcraft, promisingly he got hands to ball which is a starting point that most our rucks don't.
Hickey is slowing down and Ladhams is not good in the ruck, I'd need to replay but at first glance a lot of the walkouts from stoppages North got he was the ruck. He falls when competing in the ruck over alot and is out of the contest. Maybe he'll get there, but personally I don't see it...Sinclair mk II, minus the unconditional effort.
McLean is probably out best ruck right now, McAndrew needs some time. Imo, trading for a ruck at the end of year is not quite but almost as important as a getting KD.

Perhaps you’re right - but I must admit, there’s no way I can bring myself to re-watch yesterday’s game to check … way too frustrating.

The way I see it judging a midfield performance is often a combination of clearance numbers and inside 50's both for and against. You can usually get a good idea of how a midfield performed using a combination of those two stats.
You can get a lot of inside 50’s through repeat entries. It can be misleading. A shallow inside 50 isn’t much.

Inside 50 marks and efficiency inside 50 with shots on goal helps break out the inside 50 stat. Swans had less inside 50’s than North but more inside 50 marks and for every second inside 50 it resulted in a shot at goal. North weren’t as efficient.

May explain why we won. Swans midfield when it wins the ball in general play was able to assist creating more scoring shots and the scoreboard reflects this. If it wasn’t for poor conversion in the first quarter the game could have been over. 2.5 to 0.

I thought Heeney got involved late is a big reason we won, again showing to me that we need him fit and involved, because his best footy is matchwinning. Having him do sod all for multiple quarters is killing us

He did the same against Freo last week, glimpses of his best, but it's too inconsistent.
