Now when Roughy returns and IF and thats a big IF we get Gunston. I believe we should play him off the half back line at CHB or even on the Wing.

We should not play him the Ruck we do not want him getting battered around. His best work was being able to run around and take contested marks on the wing and in the backline. If he plays CHB he doesnt have to play on the key position forward. He can play similar to Scarlett, I believe we need a player which can take marks in the backline rather than just spoil. Watching the cats Harry taylor and Scarlett do this all the time.

Scarlett and Harry among other players are no better at marking than roughy or buddy but the difference is the forwards arnt concenred with spoiling all they care about is getting the ball themself which would enable roughy to use his lead and take a great number of contested marks. It would also solidify the backline.

ONly if we get Gunston. Thoughts?

For mine he plays forward like he always has and if he's not touching it he has a run on the ball. Franklin/Roughead are the best 1-2 forward combo going around (still kicked more goals than Cloke/Dawes this year 98 to 96), I can't understand why people would want to break that up.

Ever since we learned Roughy was a decent ruck I've hoped we'd line up with Roughy at CHB, Hale at FF and Bailey/Renouf as 1st ruck. Leaving us with three effective rucks in each third of the ground. Benefits obviously being that we can afford to have the single pure ruckman in the team and two guys who can help ease that rucking load over the back and forward halves the ground.

Roughy can always swing forward if we need to go on a big attack. Whether that be to roll the dice in a game we're losing to come back and win it or to take advantage of our momentum when we have it and put the foot on the throat of teams that make us pay when we don't (Geelong).

Id like to see what hes like at fullback i.e on Cloke of J Brown

agree 100% with SPURSFAN. Roughy is a forward and should play there.

If he isn't getting involved and the fitness staff deem his body is right - back into the ruck rotating with Bailey.

If this means Hale is left out of the side - so be it, Roughy playing back is crazy talk for mine.

Roughy will play more of a lead up and stay at home Full Forward. An occasional run on the ball will also help him build his fitness. As for Ruck - it is over. It would be negligent if the club played him as a Forward/Ruck.

In any case, this is his best role. I can see him doing a lot of body on body work in his training and I hope his main focus is kicking goals and dragging a Key Defender away from Buddy. I can also see us using a crumber at his feet.

NOTE:

At the age of 35 David Beckham returned within 6 months to play for LA Galaxy - 35 is pretty old. That's actually playing, so you'd think he was back in full training at least a month before that.

Roughy is what...24?

I see no reason why he won't be back by Round 1. I believe he will be in full training by late January 2012. Backham had some setbacks too as he tried to recover as fast as possible.

Now the club will probably take a more conservative approach and give him close to double the usual time to heal. (A lot of Elite Sportsmen come back within 6 months). That would still mean a comeback by around May/June 2012, giving him enough time to start his pre season in February and get match fit.

Roughhead will be a ruckmen next year. He has asked for this and Hawthorn think it's his best position. He could of done his achilles in the goal square playing at Full forward. They expect him to make a 100% recovery and to be able to possibly become an All-Australian as the second Ruckmen, which he was surely ahead of petrie in before he went down this year

I'd be glad to be proven wrong. I honestly doubt we'll risk him. Possibly in 2013. In any case, Roughy would of been a huge asset in the forward line against the Pies. We were fine in the Ruck.

I hope you're right and we can play him in both roles. I sincerely doubt. To compete against 200cm+ Rucks requires a lot of effort from a torn achilles. If Roughy isn't prepared to jump that high, then he will be less effective. As an onballer or around the ground Ruck where he competes from the boundary line is different. That's more body work.

Anyway, time will tell. I'll be rapt if he gets back 100%.

I'm loving the Hawks line up next year. Renouf CHB, Rough on the wing, maybe Buddy as the sub - massive impact player. We will be awesome.

Rough was playing easily the best footy of his career as ruck/forward. Get him fit and play it again. Let's not forget he didn't injure himself in the ruck - he could have just as easily done it crossing a road it was that innocuous.

This! Well, maybe not the first paragraph, which did give me a laugh. I vaguely remember people saying Roughie should be sent to the ressies when he was a stay-at-home forward coz he seemingly wasn't getting into the game. Well, it certainly was a different story when he was swung into the ruck when Bails was resting. Not only did these two prove to be a great ruck combo, but in my mind Roughie suddenly became our most valuable player out there!

Those who want to wrap Roughie up in cotton wool and restrict his output to just playing FF once more just aren't thinking it through. Hey, this is a man's game and injuries are gonna happen. Should we hide Max Bailey in a forward pocket and maybe Ben Stratton in a back pocket? They've had some significant injuries themselves, rumour has it.

When Roughie is set to rock-and-roll again, he plays forward/ruck just like he was doing earlier this year. And that should be from his first senior game back. If he's lining up to play, then he's right to play in whatever possie(s) he's best at. At the end of the day, this could be the difference between simply competing with the Geelongs and Collingwoods of this world and actually thumping them.

I'd play Roughie as ruck rover in the same mould as Sam Kekovich - for those of you old enough to remember.

My impressions of Roughie are that he has great, natural instincts but when he has to think about it he takes too much time. He needs to be in the play where he can do the most damage to the opposition.

I like this idea. The six weeks or so he spent on the ball this year were his most productive. Furthermore, we have been crying out for an attacking/ goal kicking midfielder for god knows how long. At six foot five he makes an awesome ruck-rover much in the vein of Goodes from Sydney. I have no doubt this is how he will be used in the future.

buddy and Rough rotate from chf into the middle as ruckrovers...sounds scary, for the opposition!!

Roghy as a ruck rover who drifts into attack may have some real merit. He could also drift back to help the defence when opposition teams have the momentum.

If we could get 40 odd goals from him in the above role/s, it would excellent.

I honestly don't want to see him leaping against a 200cm giant just for a tap. Better for him to use his strength and nous reading the play with Max/Hale in the Ruck. I am hoping Max can really improve in presenting as a big forward.

Like him to be used as a utility...

Moved between forward, on the ball and BACK if needed.

With Hale showing enough this year, moving rough back is no longer a problem in regards to Buddy been triple teamed.

Could easily become an AA CHB for mine.

Clarko just needs to pull the trigger and explore him down back for extended periods.

Jonathon Brown was used in a similar vein by Brisbane a few years back. Played so well there he was considered a Brownlow contender. Big body who has good skills when the ball hits the deck. Failing that he pushes forward when he gets a size mismatch to use his marking skills.

It does sound good, but I'm not as confident. Sniper Thug-brain 'I'm so innocent and a media wonder as well as a coaching genius that back-stabbed my own coach because of my peerless ego' Lloyd took well over 12 months to come back from a very similar injury.

No disrespect to our netballers, who are the best on this planet at least, but I think it's drawing a long arrow to compare Sherelle McMahon's recovery to Roughie's. One was a full-forward who didn't have to move much in a 'non-contact' sport. The other plays Aussie Rules.

I don't seriously expect Roughie back till the second half of next season. Hope I'm wrong.
