The "We must get Tom Lynch at all costs...or maybe not" Thread

The thread title irks me. What is all costs? In hindsight was the price right for Treloar? Not sure. How strong is next years draft? Who can we get at pick 6? How does McLarty come on? How does Moore come on? How does Balta/Brander come on? Can we get Tomlinson on the cheap? Does Lynch/McCarthy from the rookie list make it? By the end of next year will we be the team most in need of Lynch's services?

Every team needs Lynch, I mean every team kills for the best KPF or mid, but what is all costs. If it's something absurd like two mids, Sidey Degoey and a first than it's a big NO! How much salary will he cost. We get Lynch if the price is right, whatever that is.

Me, can we please just go to the draft!

If we have to trade for him, not worth it, in terms of what we could lose. Agree
with you

Treloar costs us:
Pick 9 in 2015 was Sam Weiderman (GWS gave that to Melbourne as part of a separate trade)
Pick 8 in 2016 was Griffin Logue (GWS gave that to Fremantle as part of a separate trade)

2 years later it's an interesting debate...
On that we in front

This Tom Lynch to Collingwood thing is the biggest pipe dream on this board for the last 2 to 3 years. I have no idea where this originated from but I can't see any chance that it will ever happen.

get over it!

It all started from a leak out of the Holden center on EBnW, that he was our long term "big fish" we were chasing, the rumour centered around this trade period and using the fact he is FA as a bargaining chip.

All of this means little if Lynch doesn't want to leave and since it was leaked he has been made captain and now has a bribe from AFL house for more outside the cap dollars!

Howe would be a recent one who knocked back larger offers to come to Collingwood. He is now one of the go to guys for media work.
Can you rephrase that last question? I feel like I need to do BODMAS to work it out.
Likes for using BODMAS

Brackets* Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

Still good these days. Memories.

* Technically aren't rounded brackets actually parentheses?

Mind you, he was the next best choice behind Ablett who was clearly never going to get them anywhere with his style of leadership. Whether it was something he (Lynch) was aspiring to or something that will keep him there is yet to be seen or known.

I am not sure he is the next best choice or even the current best on field leader at the suns.

IMO Steven May should of been made captain but they were scared of losing Lynch so gave it to him instead, as not many captains "walk" from their club.

I agree re potential motivation for Lynch - although I think you mean May should've been sole captain. They're both captain ain't they?

With all due respect, players such as Moore, McLarty, McCarthy, Lynch (Coll), Tomlinson or even U18 kids such as Balta or Brander are not in Tom Lynch's league.

However Tom Lynch paired with Darcy Moore is a very exciting prospect - and would allow Reid to go down back.

I would give up DeGoey and Pick 6 for him in a heartbeat.

Lynch will not come at any price that will not cripple our recruitment for years to come.
His case is on a par with Carlton and the mercenary.
Yes they grabbed the best mid in the country with a brown paper bag full of cash but it trashed their prospects for over a decade.

It won't happen.

Hey!

It's a thread, get over it. Everyone's entitled to an opinion.

all this angst over what we trade for Lynch. hes a free agent next year, all it will cost is money no draft picks, having said that Mayne's contract probably means we will be outbid if he leaves Gold Coast (which i personally hope doesn't happen for Gold Coasts sake)

If it's Sidebottom De Goey and a pick for Lynch.. then I'll go to the Westpac Centre with 'Get f' blaring out of my subwoofers.. on repeat!

Yeah, that's not actually what happened. The years before Judd came to Carlton they finished last, last and second last. The year Judd arrived, they finished 11th then played finals for the next 3 years.

"But they gave up Kennedy!" you say. At the time, they had a dominant Fev in his mid 20's who won a couple of Colemans and came runner up on 99 goals. They would have expected him to be their KPF for a lot longer than he was and at the time Kennedy was surplus.

Apart from Judd and Fev, the Carlton list was horrendous and you could argue that if anything, Judd got a team into consecutive finals when it had no purpose being there.

I now need to take a bath and throw up in my mouth a little.

Judd was recruited for a premiership, Carlton made that quite clear and it was a failure. One man cannot make a team of also rans into a flag team - no matter how much money you pay.
You made my point for me - Judd got them into finals with no hope of ultimate success and yet they mortgaged the farm and their soul for him.
That adds up to failure to me.
Failure to produce the intended - and much trumpeted result.
And
Failure to visualise the inevitable result.
They are only now just starting to recover from that piece of absolute stupidity.

It's been years since we have flexed our financial muscle and gone for a big gun recruit.
This guy is in the best 5 tall forwards in the league and by getting him we can use Darcy Moore where he has always been best suited in defense. Even if we do continue with the vision of Moore as a forward, having Lynch will make us a top 8 side. Ben Reid is not the answer.

You're overlooking Mayne.

The Judd trade netted WC Kennedy, Masten and Notte. That's hardly mortgaging the farm, with Kennedy being the only one who hurts (see Fev discussion). Carlton were and have been rubbish for the past 20 years, bar a couple of Judd years. Even if they didn't do the deal, history shows that they would have cocked up their rebuild as they always do.

We aren't anywhere near the diabolical situation Carlton were in at the time. It's all opinion but I think we are closer to Geelong the year before they got Dangerfield.

Jasper this subject we don't agree on at all and there is no likelihood of either of us convincing the other so lets leave it by the side of the road and let the thread move on to Lynch and the possibilities.

Thank you for offering some logical and sensible info. It's sorely lacking around here.

Much easier to go off your head, two top 10 picks!!!!

If GWS said we'll give you Treloar and a 2nd rd pick for Weiderman and Logue, you'd try to hide your laughter and then accept the deal rather quickly.
