This Or That WW 2.png

It's been a couple of years since I ran the first edition of This Or That Werewolf, so I thought it was high time to bring it back. It's pretty much a regular game of Werewolf, except rather than being randomly assigned a role, you’re going to be randomly assigned TWO roles.

Wait. Two roles? How does that even work?

Really bloody well, actually. Let me explain.

When the game begins, you will be assigned THIS role and you will also be assigned THAT role. Only one of the roles will actually be true, but at no point in the game will it be explicitly confirmed which one. It’s up to YOU to work our what your true role is using your undeniably gifted set of Werewolfing skills. And for some of you, your sexual charisma. You know who you are. It'll also help to pay attention to both the results and non-results of your actions, as well as other things that happen throughout the game. Slowly but surely you'll start to work it out, although that will be slower for some of you. In this case, you probably don't know who you are.

Your win condition will be linked only to your true role, but apart from that, like I said, it’s a fairly regular game of Werewolf.

The game will get started on Sunday night (23rd March).

This AND That roles will be randomly assigned to all players and will be communicated before the start of Night 1 via PM (Private Message) to everyone. The Village must identify and kill all of the Werewolves, Mafia and Neutral roles before these players can kill enough players to satisfy their own win condition.

Each day will consist of two phases, starting with Night 1 on Sunday 23rd March:

Night phase (9pm – 8am AEDT)
Players with night actions will nominate the targets of these actions via PM during this phase. These actions must be bolded and clearly stated to be valid. Actions will not be accepted after 7:59am, whether or not deadline has been announced in the game thread.

Day phase (8am – 9pm AEDT)
After the results of night actions have been announced, all players will publicly vote to lynch one player during this phase. Votes will not be accepted after 8:59pm, whether or not deadline has been announced in the game thread. The player with the most votes by the time of the deadline will be lynched and their role revealed in the game thread. In the event of a tied lynch, there will be a multi-lynch i.e. all the leading vote-getters will be lynched.

VOTING
Votes must be in the game thread and must bold the player being voted. Tagging the moderators is not required. You do not have to provide a reason for your vote for it to be valid.

FAILURE TO VOTE IN ANY DAY PHASE WILL RESULT IN A MODKILL

OTHER REASONS FOR MODKILLS

  • Failing to nominate a night action on TWO separate Night phases (explicitly choosing to not use an action is fine)
  • Any communication about this particular game of Werewolf outside of the game thread, except for those that have an allocated PM group
  • Any deleting or editing posts from the game thread
  • Posting screenshots of BigFooty of any kind in the game thread
  • Directly quoting any PMs from me as moderator in the game thread

And just to reiterate outside the spoiler tags:

FAILURE TO VOTE IN ANY DAY PHASE WILL RESULT IN A MODKILL

ROLES

1. The number of evil roles is capped at 1/3rd of the total number of players (rounded down to the nearest even number)
2. The number of neutral roles is capped at 1 per 15 total players (or part thereof)
3. The number of good roles (excluding Flogs) is capped at 1/4th of the total number of players (rounded down to the nearest number)
4. The number of Flogs is capped at 1 per 10 total players (or part thereof)

For example, if there are ...Evil roles:Neutral roles:Good roles:Flogs:Villagers:
19 players62425
23 players62537
28 players82738
31 players103747

5. The first Mafia role will be Godfather, the second will be Goon, the rest will be random
6. The first Werewolf role will be Alpha Wolf, the second will be Wolf, the rest will be random
7. The neutral roles will all be random
8. The first good role will be Vigilante, the second will be Doctor, the third will be the True Seer, the rest will be random

POTENTIAL ROLE LIST

Mafia Roles
(get a factional kill each Night Phase (EXCEPT Night 1) that cannot be Roleblocked)
  • Godfather - Night immune to kills; Seers as if they are a Villager; Gets one seer each Night Phase
  • Mafioso - Becomes the Godfather if Godfather is killed or not chosen as a role
  • Roleblocker - Blocks another player's action each Night Phase (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases)
  • Intimidator - Forces a player to only post in a certain way during the next Day Phase, but targeted player can still vote (Intimidation will need to be fair, at the moderator’s discretion)
  • Blackmailer - Forces a player to vote for a certain other player in the next Day Phase
  • Psychopath - If they are killed at night, they retaliate and kill the person who targeted them (or the lowest rung of the faction who targeted them) excluding any Night Immune or protected roles
  • Detonator - At any point in the game, can choose to detonate their explosives, killing themselves and another player of their choice. Both players' roles will be hidden by the explosion.
  • Goon - No powers, but part of the Mafia faction
WIN CONDITION - Eliminate all Werewolves, Neutral roles and Vampires (if there are any), plus equal or outnumber the Village.

Werewolves Roles
(get a factional kill each Night Phase (EXCEPT Night 1) that cannot be Roleblocked)
  • Alpha Wolf - Night immune to kills; Seers as if they are a Villager; Gets one seer each Night Phase
  • Beta Wolf - Becomes the Alpha Werewolf if Alpha Werewolf is killed or not chosen as a role
  • Werecub - No powers, but the Werewolves get an extra kill in the Night Phase following their death (that cannot be Roleblocked)
  • Manipulative Wolf - Secretly changes someone's vote in the next Day Phase to a player of their choosing
  • Evasive Wolf - Can escape their first attempted lynch (the next highest vote-getter will be lynched instead)
  • Mama Wolf - Can protect a player from kill actions each Night Phase (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases)
  • Wolf - No powers, but part of the Werewolves faction
WIN CONDITION - Eliminate all Mafia, Neutral roles and Vampires (if there are any), plus equal or outnumber the Village.

Neutral Roles
  • Serial Killer - Night immune to kills; Seers as if they are a Villager; Gets one kill each Night Phase
WIN CONDITION - Make it to the final 4 players.
  • Arsonist - Night immune to kills; Seers as if they are a Villager; Can douse OR ignite all doused players each Night Phase; Night Immune and Protected players do not ignite (but stay doused)
WIN CONDITION - Make it to the final 4 players.
  • Poisoner – Night immune to kills; Seers as if they are a Villager; Can poison a player of their choice each Night Phase who will die from the poison at the end of the following Night Phase (unless they are Night Immune or protected either night by the Doctor)
WIN CONDITION - Make it to the 4 final players.
  • Head Vampire - Seers as if they are a Villager; Can recruit (up to 3 more Vampires at any point in time) OR kill each Night Phase; Recruited Vampires retain their night actions, but their win condition changes to the Vampire’s win condition; Once the Head Vampire is killed, the Vampires can no longer recruit, but can still kill one player each Night Phase
WIN CONDITION - Eliminate or recruit all Mafia, Werewolves, Neutral roles and equal or outnumber the Village.
  • Evil Doctor – Is given a list of players in the Mafia/Werewolf factions, but doesn’t know their exact role; Can protect a player from kill actions each Night Phase (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases); N.B. Does not count when calculating the Mafia/Werewolf/Vampire win condition.
WIN CONDITION – Wins if either the Mafia OR the Werewolves win.

Good Roles (Village)
  • Vigilante - Can kill a player each Night Phase
  • Doctor - Can protect a player from kill actions each Night Phase (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases)
  • True Seer - Can seer a player each Night Phase; Always gets the true result (except for those stipulated otherwise); Does not know if they are the true or fake seer and cannot seer themselves
  • Fake Seer - Can seer a player each Night Phase; Always gets a randomised false result; Does not know if they are the true or fake seer and cannot seer themselves
  • Jack Of All Trades - Can either Kill, Protect, Roleblock or Seer a player each Night Phase (must use all the actions once before using an action again and can't use the same action on consecutive nights)
  • Town Drunk - MUST either Kill, Protect, Roleblock or Seer a player each Night Phase, but either the target or the action will be randomised
  • Nurse - Replaces the Doctor if the Doctor is killed or not chosen as a role (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases)
  • Bodyguard - Choose a player to protect each night; If that player is targeted with a kill action, Bodyguard dies instead and so does the person who targeted them (or the lowest rung of the faction who targeted them, excluding any Night Immune or protected roles) (cannot target the same player in consecutive Night Phases)
  • Watcher - Chooses a player each Night Phase and is told who targeted their chosen player with a Night Phase action (if anyone), but not what the action was
  • Tracker - Chooses a player each Night Phase and is told who the chosen player targeted with a Night Phase action (if anyone), but not what the action was
  • Follower - Chooses a player each Night Phase and is told what Night Phase action the chosen player took (if any), but not who they targeted
  • Voyeur - Chooses a player each Night Phase and is told what Night Phase actions were actioned against them (if any), but not who targeted them
  • Bus Driver - Chooses two players to switch at night, so any actions targeted on one player will instead be targeted at the other (and vice versa)
  • Bomb - Seers as if they are a Villager; If killed overnight, the person who killed them (or the lowest rung of the faction who killed them, excluding any Night Immune or protected roles) dies as well
  • Sniper - Gets a one-off Day kill
  • Mayor - Their lynch vote each Day Phase is worth two votes
  • Local Celebrity - Due to their popularity, starts each Day Phase with minus one (-1) lynch votes
  • Saint - If lynched, the first person to have voted for them in that Day Phase also dies
  • Doppelganger – Chooses a player on Night 1 (in a PM) and if that player dies, takes over their role; Sees as doppelganger until takes over someone else’s role and then seers as that role
  • Agoraphobe – Chooses a player each Night Phase to hide behind. They will be protected from any kill actions targeting themselves, but if the person they're hiding behind is killed, they will also die.
  • Pollster - Once per game, forces all current votes to be invalid and restricts the lynch votes to be cast between only two players of their choice
  • Flog - Shares a PM with the other Flogs; Flogs share a choice of a one-off kill OR a one-off protection OR a one-off seer in any one Night Phase
  • Villager - Has no powers, but feel free to choose it if you want
WIN CONDITION - Kill all Mafia, Werewolves, Neutral roles and Vampires (if there are any) before any of them reach their own win condition.

AMULET

An amulet may be included in the game, and if so:
  • It will be randomly allocated to a player at the start of the game
  • The holder of the amulet will be protected from ALL Night Phase actions and the next day’s lynch (the next highest vote-getter will be lynched instead)
  • It must be passed on before the Day Phase deadline
  • It can only be passed onto someone else in a PM (Mafia/Werewolves/Flogs) once
  • If not passed on before the Day Phase deadline, it will be randomly re-allocated to another player
  • It will explode at a randomised pre-determined day and time, killing the holder
