Hope you don't mind me posting on your board but I thought you might find this interesting. Time will tell if India clash between the Tigers and GWS happens

RICHMOND'S ambition to play an AFL match in India looks set to be realised, with Greater Western Sydney agreeing to play a pre-season game there against the Tigers next year.
The Tigers and Giants have agreed to play the match in Mumbai next February, most likely at the DY Patil Stadium, a state-of-the-art 60,000 seater that hosts Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale has been floating the idea for some time, but had struggled to find an AFL club willing to participate, with Essendon angling for a post-season clash.
But the Giants, coached by the lateral-thinking Kevin Sheedy, are open to the pre-season date, and see it as an opportunity to snare new fans and even players.

I like the idea, especially the way it's trying to appeal to the Indian Community here by playing a game over there.

Is a little annoying that, assuming they run the NAB cup the same way next year, the match will need to being the second week as tat'd be the first 'one on one' match.

I still think the best follow up would be to ensure we play a home game during the regular season against GWS and have it as an Indian themed round.

I like that Essendon have been cut out of the picture

I think it's be we avoid any other Vic teams, so the Melbourne based Indian community gets less of an option :)

Broadly speaking, I don't think we'll get that many fans in India, but hopefully any Indians coming here will be a little more open to the game and will 'remember' the Tiges, so we'll be the first club they'll look at and consider supporting.

I agree that an idian themed game, home & away or NAB cup in Melbourne would be a far better option. We need to get the Indian community in Melbourne involved. Also other initiatives such as an indian participation in family day or an actual cultural day at punt road.

I have my doubts it will be all that beneficial but all for the boys getting the experience, will be something they wont forget.

You would want to take plenty of bottled water. A simple thing like a stomach bug could wipe out half the list for a week.

Like the idea of appealing to Melbourne's Indian population though. You just want to make sure it doesn't inhibit your preparation.

its a great Idea, I just worry about playing a game in India too close to regular season(if they keep the same set up as now).

All very valid points relating to on field football.

However i think this is an extremely smart move for off field reasons. India is a HUGE economy (top 10 in the world). All you need to do is have a look at the IPL cricket where teams with powerfully back sponsors play hundreds of thousands of dollars for relative no names to play for 2 months.

Could you imagine the amount of $$$ that could go the RFC's way if some Indian company decides to sponsor us to gain international exposure? Especially in this day and age where we are trying to strengthen international ties.

Add this to the cultural significance of Bengali Tiger to the Indian people. Even small things like that can attract people to buy a membership.

Potential extra members + Potential cashed up sponsors = $$$

An excellent move by the RFC.

Ive been to DY Patil Stadium a few times (hell, Ive even met DY Patil!).. its a absolutely beautiful stadium.. and I fully endorse the clubs venture in this direction (Im in Mumbai now as it happens).

As a regular visitor to India for the past 6 years within the sports-business industry I think the venture has great possibilties - it will just need to be percevered with over 3 years or so. Dont worry about bottled water etc.. those old cliches dont really apply.. and I would strongly encourage any one inclined to use the match as an excuse come visit this wonderful country.

my only doubt is the ground size... its smaller than the old SCG.. it will be squeezy. they might have to have a rule like you cant shoot at goal outside the "35" meter line! and a smaller centre square... but thats a small quibble.. thank god our club has got out there and done this FIRST. great stuff by the club!

(play the game any time in January and the weather conditions will be absolutely perfect.. India would be great place for a pre-season camp. I even know a high-altitude place!)

HAHAHA.:D

So true.

Waste of time.

Disagree.

Know two major companies that have been notified of the potential of sponsoring an Australian Rules Football team with their push into the Australian market.

If the worst thing out of it is we get a couple of good money sponsors it would be well worth it.

I think great things will happen from this.

Did anyone see the bummers official in India ? lol they always have to butt in don't they?

"But daddy I want it nowwwwwww"

In reality, could you anyone think of a more innappropriate team to bring to Mumbai than one called "the Bombers"?

its half funny but in all seriousness, they couldnt possibly be involved.. it would be not just awkward, it would be really quite offensive.
