News Tigers to play GWS in India

I think this will be a excellent move by the both teams and the AFL.

One of the factors is India's participation in the International Cup, finished 16th out of 16 teams in 2008, last place in the pool stages with mere 6 points scored for, 451 points scored against. They lost to Finland by 28-56, and in 15th place playoff, lost to China by 42-56. However in 2011, they won the first game in Division II against East Timor, 60-52 and finished 4th place in Division II out of 6 teams, a improvement comparable to 2008.

If the preseason between Richmond and GWS was held in Mumbai, it will help boost interest in India, especially among the Australian Rules Football clubs who played in Indian leagues. Who knows, maybe Richmond and GWS can bring over under-17s to play against some of those clubs to help the Indian clubs experience what it's like to play against an AFL club and help them develop for 2014 International Cup.

Waste of time.

I can think of two reasons for this initiative, who knows if there will be a payday.

1. Demographics of Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia's second largest city, a diverse and multicultural city. Almost a quarter of Victoria's population was born overseas, and the city is home to residents from 180 countries, who speak over 233 languages and dialects and follow 116 religious faiths. Melbourne has the second largest Asian population in Australia, which includes the largest Indian and Sri Lankan communities in the country.[2][3][4]
Currently approx 55K-60K Indians in Victoria.

2. A lot of Indian IT companies have a presence in Melbourne, and it is growing. There may well be partnership/sponsorship opportunities down the track.

Points 1 and 2 go hand in hand, with regards to forming a ground swell of interest from one of the largest populations in the world, but just as importantly, one with a large presence here in Melbourne.

(tamil) tigers?

yep, that would be the most innappropriate match up in history: Tigers vs Bombers in Colombo.

In India however, the term Tiger is primarily associated with their much loved and cherised, but highly endanged native Tigers / Bengal Tigers... and is occassionally used as the national animal/symobl.

Though well familiar with the Tamil Tiger terrorist group Indians dont particularly associate it with the term Tiger with them..its not in any way contentioius in the way the term 'Bomber' would be..

perhaps we could donate $1 from every membership to a tiger sanctuary in india
a very worthwhile cause, and something that has been discussed on this board before
would go hand in hand with this new india initiative, and show it's not a one-way relationship

is that all, gee, i would have guessed 10 x that, I reckon Ive met most of them then:p

stop buying your pies from 7/11 :D

Yeah from my recent travels there (before the Mumbai bombing) I'd agree that terrorist bombings by groups with a problem with the indian govt are a considerable problem, often to do with territories on the fringe of India like Kashmir, and Assam. Tamil tigers aren't /weren't on the radar
