Tobacco Tax - who does it really hurt?

In the last couple of years I've noticed a increase in the amount of people who smoke, none of them smoke legally bought cigarettes.

Reality is prohibition has never, and will never work.
Wow im sold. I barely see anyone smoke now. So whos perception trumps whos?

Maybe we should just look at actual data.

Who needs data when my own eyes and real world experience shows me less people smoke than they did 20 years ago.

This is true.

The rate hasn't gone down as much as you would think though.
Out of sight out of mind.

I heard the latest data showed smoking rates were increasing, particularly in younger Gen Z types, for the first time since the 90s.

There's a bit of a pop culture and social media trend back towards smoking being "cool" again, plus the accessibility of vaping as a gateway to smoking.

Prohibition has never worked.

Your best bet is to educate people on the dangers and provide them with subsidised ways to quit.

I think your suggestion is exactly right, and was effective when combined with minimising tobacco companies' ability to advertise their products and manage the messaging of what it meant to be a smoker.

I think there's a direct correlation with any sudden increase in smoking and some combination of what appears to be relaxed rules around portraying smoking in media, and a complete lack of regulation of social media.

So no laws prohibiting the sale or purchase of any addictive or harmful substances..none?

Just 'educate people on the dangers' and give them subsidised programs to help them quit.

That's your plan.

You're not a deep thinker are you?

Works alot better than Prohibition.

Increasing taxation and introducing useless laws that no one follows isn't deep thinking at all

It wasn't long ago on this forum people were scoffing at the idea of a black market for tobacco.

Now the government is engaged in a unwinnable war on black market tobacco

Reducing smoking rates is important but we are going about it the wrong way. Do any of you actually know anyone who has given up smoking due to taxes and plain packaging? I dont. All I see is increasing poverty and a huge illegal black market for tobacco.

Talk to someone who is suffering from tobacco related cancer or someone who has lost someone through it, or someone who desperatly wants to quit. When you are addicted you will pay any price and go without other necessities, or go down the dangerous illegal route.

The only way is for government to subsidise patches and gum and make them free. Using taxes to social engineer has never and will never work
Sure got too expensive for me, I went from tailories @$2.10 a pack and moved to rollies when tailories got too expensive to nicorette to rollies to nicorette to rollies to champix to zero.

The price point added to the health benefits defo has an impact. Furthermore when a packet of smokes was 1/4 of my pocket money weekly it was easy to take up.

Dunno if kids get $200 a week in pocket money now do they?

Reckon it’s a decent disincentive to take it up in the first place yeah?

Just wish they wouldn’t treat it as a cash cow and that 100% of the revenue was spent on the cost of smoking in the health system / subsidising quit campaigns and drugs And developing safer vape programs as an alternative.

I'm sick of smokers trying to get around paying for their future health care by muddying the waters by saying taxes aren't helping and forcing themselves into illegal tobacco use.

Presumably you all know how to use Google.

Daily Tobacco use has dropped from 16% in 2007 to 8% in 2022-23 in Australia and it was 25% in 1993.

The % of people who have never smoked has risen from 50% in 1993 to 65% in 2022-23.

In 2022-23, the number of 18-24yo who have never smoked is 83% compared to 58% in 2001

Smokers need to face facts that they got sucked into something stupid in their youth and they're too weak-willed to stop killing themselves. That's nobody's problem but their own.

And don't blame the Govt for "forcing" people to give money to illegal tobacco dealers.

People rightly ridicule smokers these days. Walking around smoking is like walking around saying "I'm too stupid to not kill myself".

(Sorry for being blunt, friend of mine died of cancer last week leaving behind wife, children, grandkids in his 40's, and these excuses sound like the stupidest thing I've ever heard even more.) If you did smoke, but have stopped, probably still worth getting your lungs checked.

Easy to manipulate statistics when illicit use isn't counted.

Tobacco and alcohol use will never be at 0%. Prohibition will never work.

Taxes had some effect up to a point. It is now having the opposite effect. Have been on a site where 90% of the workers have been smoking. It's a trend that has been increasing over the last 18 months

Government took the cash and put it in their own pockets. Then the black market took control and young people are smoking again.

They have already lost the tobacco war

Why would you just state something with no facts? What is the purpose?

Who is manipulating statistics in a study going for 30 years?

It's got nothing to do with illicit use, it's survey-based, asking people if they smoke or not.

Strange that people in a clear shrinking minority always bleat the loudest that they're not really in a shrinking minority, it's all lies.

The number of idiots who smoke is decreasing towards zero. I agree it will never reach zero, there will always be stupid people. Soon enough people will be convinced the health stats about smokers dying is all lies and all the cookers will be "cleansing with tobacco smoking", given that's about the intelligence level of most remaining smokers.

Problem is groups like this

You have to do some digging to find out it was set-up and fully funded by the tobacco industry.

On the worksite I was on today I was one of the few who wasn't smoking.

It's a filthy habit but pretending that the numbers are still decreasing is a delusion.

Go to any worksite and see the majority of trades smoking, or go to a hospital/nursing home and see the bunch of nurses smoking.

Get out of the sheltered workshop.

I also work in Aged Care. Literally every statistic in that industry is a lie, yet we determine policy based on those statistics.

The best way to fight tobacco use is by education
