Signs on until the end of 2025.

“Tom is an outstanding person, despite being quite timid, and has shown faith in our program by recommitting early,” Cripps said of the 27-year-old.

This to me screamed he was going to be first picked all year ahead of McKenzie.

But then..... he goes and hurts his knee and might not leave the SANFL for the year.

Weird call. 4 years to go for a fringe key back is way too long.

Nah unless Skinner proves to be AFL calibre, I see Clurey replacing Jonas.

We should probably draft some key backs or convert Marshall though.

I dont mind it.

He is AFL quality.

Unless he gets badly injured is is going to be great depth or traceable at worst.

And probably an experienced 1st 22 defender when Jonas and McKenzie are gone.

Yep

There is not much between McKenzie and Clurey and both quality

Yes our defence is too short, even with Aliir but the 6 as a whole work well together.

someone needs media training

“Tom is an outstanding person and player. despite being quite a quiet man off the park he is a ferocious at the contest as any great Port Adelaide club man. He has shown faith in our program by recommitting early,”

Solid as a rock? the first clip is literally double fisting a ball he should have marked, with extremely timid body language.

He's no wakelin but he certainly better than a fatty carlile or aeroplane man

If he was the tall in the back pocket supporting a 194-196cm full back, he would be perfect for our needs. I'm hoping Skinner can elevate himself into our best 22 as full back or the "Bishop" role who supported Wakelin.

He's AFL quality but I'm not sure he's first choice in an elite defensive back 6. 4 years to run on his contract now - don't like the length but if the money is right it's not the end of the world - at the very least he's a dependable KPD who can play on some of the bigger bodies in the competition.

If he found any consistent form at the top end of his game he'd be a walk up start every week. His game against Hawkins in 2019 was as good from a KPD as we've had in some time.

Along with our now retired Brad Ebert, Tom had/ has (respectively) just the best hands overhead at our club.
His achilles heel is that he is an endurance athlete, who does not match up well on faster players.

Clurey is ok, but only ok. He's never going to be a star. The problem is in an ideal setup it'd be a 195cm+ lock down KPD, Aliir and Clurey as our KPD's. Instead we have Aliir, 'Only a KPD when wearing stilts' Jonas and Clurey, so he gets jobs he shouldn't, or it's Aliir doing them wrecking our rebound.

We still need to trade / draft a 195cm+ KPD. In the interim I'd still like to see Finlayson and Skinner tried more as KPD's at SANFL level. Ideally being able to push Jonas out of the side by the end of the year, so the regular nightmare of sides with multiple 195cm+ KPD's killing us when it matters most stops happening.

Clurey, Jonas and McKenzie are 3rd tall size at best and I suspect Clurey will replace Jonas in his role in a season or so, hence the contract extension.

As has been mentioned in the past we haven't had a key defensive general since Wakelin retired, the Power defence needs some genuine 195 cm plus height, particularly against teams with multiple talls.

Alir can be sensational but is nowhere near as effective when he is forced to body up on a gorilla and oppo coaches are very aware of that, the drafting of eg Skinner at least suggests the lack of genuine height in the back six has at last been recognised and the club is hopefully in the process of trying to do something about it.

Aliir is our Chad Cornes.

We need Skinner to become our Wakelin, Clurey to be our Bishop and Jones to be our Montgomery.

Finlayson is an AFL level KPF, which is the rarest commodity in football. We'd be wasting him playing in defence in the AFL, let alone SANFL.

Dougal Howard would be handy

I like Clurey , he’s not a world beater but he’s a good player , he’s been reliable for the most part and done some hard jobs , he has the odd bad game but he’s usually good . He’s not the best on a hard leading tall key forward but when he plays in front he usually does well .
The problem is he's usually stuck on the oppositions biggest KPF, where as our defense should be: A 195cm+ KPD to take the main KPF, leaving Aliir free to intercept and Clurey to be the 3rd KPD, taking the lesser threat. Get in a 195cm+ KPD, ditch Jonas and let Clurey play that role until we have a younger KPD (195cm+ ideally!) coming through to replace him.
