If it’s a significant setback I hope he retires.

No way to live for him personally. Going through all that rehab still/again.

And the club needs to be a little more ruthless with players that are recurrent injury risks. Too many games lost to the same group of players

Elliot, Reid, Langdon, Broomhead, Scharenberg, Dunn... in recent years all repeatedly struck down players who have missed large chunks of footy. And their injuries have cumulatively reduced their capacity as players.

Elliot and to a lesser extent Reid are the only two of that group who post injuries are still best 22 quality... but injuries have changed their roles. Reid can’t keep up down back and Elliot seems to play smaller and be more a mid these days as his high flying days are over.

Football can be a cruel game.

Really sad for Langdon as a person. Knowing our luck Ed will go onto play 350 games lol

However, from the clubs point of view if he retires then that opens up cap space. The first domino to fall, in our pursuit of Jezza.

He should get a good payout (outside the salary cap) given his career was finished due to injury. A bit like Dane Swan.

And his family are very very rich anyway, so outside the tragedy of his career being prematurely ended, at least financially he will be ok.

Do we know for sure that Tommy is finished? Always liked him, even the laconic style which I know annoyed a lot of Pies fans. He more than made up for that in game sense and courage. An intelligent footballer.

If he really is gone, then I can reminisce about seeing his first game at Docklands. We were being hammered by Freo, but he stood up to the pressure. A sign of things to come.

After debuting, was he ever dropped for poor form?

I assumed what Buckley said about Langdon was alluding to possible surgery in the off season.
Perhaps, but a return to football seems unlikely. I think Bucks was just trying to frame it in a respectful manner, making sure Tom knows he’s valued and that he’s not being shown the door per se.

I was there as well, played on Ballantyne and was a shining light... fingers crossed for the bloke

He was always gonna be pushing the proverbial uphill but he's more than proved his metal. First by playing at the level with those knees and then by trying so hard to get back. I'll wait for the official announcement before putting a line through him though...

Having checked the AFL Record Season Guide(s), it looks like he was dropped in his debut season (2014). He missed the Rd. 15 game through concussion, but was in the senior team up to (and including) Rd. 19. For Rd. 20 he was named as an emergency (so must have been omitted) and played VFL the following week, before returning to the senior side: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/T/Tom_Langdon.html

After a long absence due to injury he played several Reserves games in 2017 before getting back into the senior team. It doesn't look as if he has played VFL since then.

He's played 4 Reserves games for Collingwood: https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/reserves-players-l-q/

For anyone who is interested in such things (and not aware of their existence) Collingwood Forever now has these very useful lists on the site:

The Dane Swan payout mechanism isn’t around anymore - and wouldn’t have applied anyway as Langdon is contracted for next year. If he and the Club reach an agreement on a termination payment it goes to the Cap in the last year he is a listed player.

Thanks for going to that trouble.

He's missed a bit through injury hasn't he? God, we've had some bad luck over last 5-7 years with good players getting injured.

But other than that, when available, Tommy's been in the side.

I've been trying since 19 season to explain it was a fallacy to expect a return

Damn shame
But it's why the last contract was delayed and low money as no one else wanted the risk

Failed two medicals ,got a lifeline from us through loyalty

My understanding on information I recieved

Lucky he's on a small contract
The club was well aware of the risk

That sounds at complete odds with the press at the time - when he was being courted hard by Sydney after a very good finals series.

He signed a 3 year contract in 2018. He didn't injure his knee until 2019.

Agree, and his brother who was in Africa with him while he was pondering the Sydney offer said it was an agonizing decision for him to make because the Swans offered more money. He passed the medical at Sydney.
