It's been reported in The Advertiser that Tony Armstrong has walked out on the Crows. He has asked to be traded to a Sydney team so he can be closer to family.

What do you think he's worth?

Not much at all. He's an ordinary player who's out of contract and requested to move to one club. There won't be any other bids that force Sydney to give up anything of value. I think he'll end up in either the ND or the PSD.

I think an Armstrong/Sumner trade would be a pretty good one. I imagine Adelaide would want more than that, considering what they've gone through with him, but they would have no leverage in any trade.

Sumner is a little guy, around 175cm from memory. Without knowing what his form in the Sydney reserves was like that, I was big on him pre-draft. Tough forward/midfielder with elite kicking skills. I haven't seen many kids his size kick a ball as long as he does.

I agree with your summation Chirs. Sumner left Sydney mid-year so they would be happy to get something for him. I'd personally be hoping for an exchange of Sydney's 2nd Round and Adelaide's 3rd round included in the deal.

I don't think either have great trade value, but potentially are both very good players and could benefit from new settings.

:thumbsu:Would be fine with that. From what I've seen Armstrong has shown slightly more than Sumner ATM (but not that much more) so his value is probably slightly higher. I expect the deal to involve lower picks so it ends up being something like Armstrong + 4th for Sumner + 3rd. However, I would be stoked if we got something like Armstrong +3rd for Sumner + 2nd. Considering how Sumner walked out on Sydney mid-year, both teams' players should benefit from a change in scenery. This trade could end up being a win-win.

What position does he play?
How good a kick is he?
Is he fast/fit/slow/small?
Does he have much potential to be a star, or is he a role player at best?

According to wikipedia, he has played 14 games. No wonder I haven't seen much, seeings as I'm not to interested in the SA teams (yes I live here though)

He's a rebounding defender. Has elite kicking skills.
Wouldn't say he's ridiculously fast, but he's far from slow.
Probably will never be a star, but could play a similar role to Suckling at Hawthorn.
Someone who can break down a zone at times with his kicking.
Biggest knock is his hardness and defensive game. Had a bit of off field driving issues last year.

Would be fine with a straight swap, Sumner was homesick* and has returned to Adelaide, so won't get anything from another club.

*there are some other stories floating around that he was sent home by the club

That's a bit harsh, me I could understand ... ;)

Armstrong was odds on to be delisted until the last few rounds this year, my guess is Sumner was also slated to be delisted, so a straight swap should get the deal done.

I reckon the Crows will end up slightly in front on the deal.

"Byron has been struggling for some time with the commitments and demands of AFL football."

While Sumner was on indefinite leave because he couldn't handle the training regime, Armstrong was playing AFL footy. Averaging 18 disposals per game and beginning to make a name for himself.
So if It's a straight swap, the Crows would be far from in front in the deal.

hendo8888, I'm thinking more of "what could be" regarding both players.

Both are a risk, both may bomb badly, but I reckon the player Sumner could be is a bit better than the player Armstrong could be.

Not going to get into an argument over apparent worths, however Sumner went home because he was homesick. The demands he couldn't handle of AFL football was living in Sydney playing reserves trying to force his way into senior team.

easy...

Armstrong for Lewis Johnson

Reid has overtaken L Johnson as the future of the swans forward line, and Johnson looks lost coping with his early injuries and current opportunities at the swans

Lewis Johnston signed a new two year deal just a couple of months back, suggesting both he and the Swans see him as part of their future plans.

Not sure when having one teenager who can take a big grab makes every other young forward on the list redundant. There is plenty of room on the list (and in the senior team) for both Reid and Johnston if/when Johnston gets over his injuries.

and henderson had just signed prior to leaving the lions...you can still get traded when newly contracted.

Crows offer a better contract and he takes that lure plus the chance to return home...could happen ;)

also, didnt johnson get over his injuries but was dropped back to the ressies???

Sydney/GWS should just wait until the PSD.

He'd be running the gauntlet trying to get to Sydney via the PSD with how thin this draft is supposed to be. GWS on the other hand can't take him unless we agree to it.

Never going to happen, Swans rate Johnston much too high for that to occur.

Johnston plays a completely different role to Reid and will likely find a spot in the side in 2012 pending injury.
