Tony Modra - What is his heritage?

Out of curiosity what exactly is his heritage? He does look Croatian and I've heard he is. I've also heard he's German, and Italian. Champion player. I remember this lad back in 92 having some standout games against the Pies booting 5, 5 against the WCE and 7 against the Lions. Back in 93 As a young fella on holiday in Perth with the folks we were at a West Coast game in round 1 and I recall some bloke in the crowd saying someone had kicked 10 goals { against Richmond go figure} and it wasn't Scott Hodges. I knew very well who it was, none other than the great emerging talent that was Tony Modra. What a breakout year for this champion, good to see him inducted in the hall of fame.

He's most widely reported as Croatian but I heard that he's Italian also - quite possible if his family is from the North, what with those flowing golden locks... I'll be back shortly.

His fathers side (Modra) is Lower Wendish. We are a Slavic minority that immigrated to Australia with the Prussians (and as we resided in Prussia referred to ourselves the same way). Upper and Lower Wendish are two Slavic groups living in a small part of nowadays Germany (in the Lusatia/Brandenburg area).
Our two languages are like a halfway mix between Polish and Czech.

He is still my favourite and most exciting Adelaide Crows player by a million miles. No one has ever came close, not even Andrew McLeod.

Not quite heritage but some other bits from his earlier life.

Went to Loxton HS. Troublesome student. Brothers and he would dominate local footy games and then have big nights out in the town that didn’t always end wel.

Supreme athlete. Almost threw Olympic qualifying distance javeline throw after not using Javeline for over 12 months.

Best not to say too much on “domestic” issues whilst he was at crows

Ah fair enough. I'm germanish. My fam came over at the end of WW1, when they found themselves living on the Serbian side of the Danube. Unfortunately at that point it was no longer owned by the Austrian Empire, so they found things were getting a bit too murdery.

high jumper.
Would love to chat to him about his time growing up. Without doubt picked up something spiritual.

I've never seen a more natural footballer or one who played so hard but fair.

He phuqed his knees taking spekkies because that's what we went to see. Not because it was how to get kicks.

Mods was many brilliant things but I have never heard him called a 'hard player' before. Thats a real stretch.

Went down like a sack of spuds R2 1994 against Worsfold in the West the week after kicking an unbelievable 13 against Blues in R1. Some thought that he never fully recovered his best form after that hit. Many times he seemed to go down a little softly in my view.

Hope my memory's not off ... but I recall Modra kicking 10 goals in a game and the Crows still lost.

Sometimes I wonder if there were or could be some potential Modra unkown father sons floating around.

My god he was a beautiful man, my mum specifically asked if we could get season tickets behind the goals so she could stare at his bum for a half, apparently it looked better in Navy over the white.
