ESSENDON will be granted approval to again use “top up” if Court of Arbitration for Sport deliver a guilty verdict against the Bombers 34.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is appealing the AFL Anti-Doping tribunal’s “not guilty” finding over allegations that 34 past and present Bombers used banned substance Thymosin beta-4 during the 2012 season.

The court could deliver its verdict any time from Monday after announcing last month that no decision would be made before January 11.

So obviously Port, Dogs, Melbourne and Saints can get stuffed for Ryder, Crameri, Melksham and Carlisle as they knowingly traded for players under drug investigations.

But Monfries is a bit more cloudy. Yes, there is no guarantee that a player you trade in won't just break his leg 3 times, there is always risk. But the club that traded him in was the one responsible for this predicament and they still benefited from the trade (maybe, I don't know who they got and can't be bothered looking it up).

I lean towards 'tough sh*t', but could be swayed.

With most high level players signed up to clubs in 2nd tier leagues, I wonder how Essendon will acquire the players they want.
Have they already selected their preferred top-up players and ensured that they have an escape clause in their contracts, or will they present an contract offer to players and negotiate a "release fee" with their clubs?

so port sue monfries - I am ok with that. But no compo - it was a risk they were aware of and accepted.
I think you're confused with Ryder. The Monfries trade was made before the doping scandal hit.

Ryder will certainly be missed, Monfries not so much. I don't see why we shouldn't be entitled to a top up player for Monfries. Ryder definitely not, we took the risk and lost.

Players are responsible for what they put in their body regardless of club

The AFL can consider more things than that when dealing with compensation within its own draft system. That doesn't mean your argument is wrong, but I think there are more aspects to this that need to be considered.
