I'm not expecting this trade to eventuate but if you're looking for an example of how we try and improve our draft hand in a different strategy to selling the farm for one player at pick 2 then read on.

Collingwood retain: Pick 16
Collingwood gain: Pick 10, Pick 20, Pick 29, 2021 3rd round selection (all GWS)
Collingwood lose: Pick 14, 2021 1st round selection, 2021 2nd round selection (as we have two we are able to trade one!)

Whether we'd need to exchange future selections beyond round 1 to get a deal done or whether we could exchange pick 16 for 13/15 in the process of this deal are the finer details that can only be haggled over by the list managers. What I will say is that I hate seeing embarrassingly one sided trade suggestions and something of value would need to be on offer for GWS to entertain sliding back their earliest pick and I'm not convinced that our future 1st on it's own would be accepted for an end of 1st round and mid 2nd round selection.

My first point of thinking with any trade scenario is ending up with a pick that should see it falling prior to a bid on Reef eventuating and one that is also low enough to still be in the mix for that next best key position player after the likes of McDonald, Thilthorpe and Grainger-Barras are gone.

Someone like Reid or Cox.

After that it's about extracting value knowing a bid for Reef is expected to eventuate around the 15 to 25 range.

If it comes after pick 10 but prior to 16 then with our discount it should still see a situation where we have 1 selection remaining that falls at the very end of the 1st round. If it comes after pick 16 but prior to pick 20 then we'd still be left with a second round selection which in itself may have improved slightly from 29 owing to other clubs using picks to match bids before us. In all scenarios Reef is paid for and no points deficit will be carried over.

Hine was on radio earlier in the year and he appeared quite positive about the quality of the top 30 prospects available so having a selection remaining in the 2nd round and after the expected bid for Reef might appeal to him.

They've talked about replenishing the list and clearing the slate in one fell swoop in order to have more recruiting flexibility. I'm hoping that means having the full list quota as we search for additional talent for the next crack.

Maybe we go in a few short and see what emerges later on, given the AFL is hinting at potentially multiple opportunities to add additional players?

Could very well be the best year ever to go with that strategy, considering all U18 draftees hailing from Victoria are coming in off a missed season in 2020?

John Bertrand is 74 years old, he'd be our version of Jo Biden.
Based on his answer to the direct question on SEN the other day Bertrand has no interest in being on the board and supports those charged with making the decisions.

Regarding DFAs, I heard on Triple M Adelaide during the trade period via Mark Ricciuto that the Pies were keen on Jordan Gallucci. Haven't seen one mention in Vic press and if mentioned here I've missed it.

No idea of likelihood but speaking hypothetically he might be a cheap Stepho replacement in that forward role? Coming off a nasty injury though, Achilles rupture

As i have said before, please tell me which young tall forward has Buckley developed?

We didn't go after Lynch

Now failed to have a crack at Cameron

"We couldn't afford his salary" = extremely poor list management and planning.

Buckley can coach another five years and i would be surprised if he developed a young key forward in that time.
None. That doesn't give us anything to trade with or salary cap space to pay one. What we need is beside the point. what we can afford is - NOTHING! Yes, it's poor list management of the highest order.

One of the worst footballers at AFL level I've seen.

if we are talking about Galluci then I agree. apparently he has been injured a fair bit since he got recruited so maybe he might just needs an injury free run at it, from I've seen of him I always thought he was average but he has great burst of speed

I think that particular comment was about Matty Parker, could easily apply to Gallucci though!

What's the story with Matt Kennedy at Carlton? He's delisted, but Carlton have committed a rookie draft pick to him? Or has that rule changed?

If available in the national draft I'd be interested, a definite upgrade on Wills for an inside mid role, and age is on his side too

Teams can still take him before Carlton does

Can't say I've watched him closely enough, but he does some electric things. What's the issue with him?
He just doesn't, he kicks a couple of goals but thats it for the year, I watched him vs us in 2019 when we were 1/2 best team in the comp, he was on the bench more than he was on the ground and he wasn't injured.

Were better off taking a chance on a younger indigenous kid in the draft.

I would totally be getting into his agent's ear if I were other clubs, potentially including ours. He's better than being rookie-listed depth for the Scum and given some actual opportunity for a decent side could turn out to be good as a mature-aged recruit.

I don't mind Parker, he has a lot of X Factor about him. 2019 was his first season in the AFL and he averaged basically a goal a game as well as three tackles which I reckon you'd take from a first year forward. Would've been nice to see him improve or show something more this year, but I guess if he'd done that we wouldn't discussing him on here as a DFA.

I don't foresee him being the "solution" to our forward line issues, but I do think he'd provide something more than JT would i50.

I would have been fine with us taking a chance on Sydney Stack, or at least asking Richmond the question if they were on the fence re: giving him the flick.

Alas that opportunity appears to have passed and in hindsight we probably don't have the support network within the club anyway, given that we don't have any other indigenous players on the list to help him settle in at our club (only bringing this up as he's been a little wayward again this year as we all are probably aware).

Kid has talent and work ethic (as evidenced by his rapid rise in 2019) when he gets the bit above the shoulders right though and would be well worth a punt.

You can only have two Cat B rookies, so one of Tohill or Keane is Cat A (side note: did we ever figure out which one was which?).

We don't have to go in with the full 44 players and, given the state of our cap and how heavy our top end contracts still are (despite clearing 1.5 mil+ of salary net for next year), I'd guess we wont be going in with a full list of 44 next year.
Pretty sure we decided it was Keane.

Yeah achilles are not the injury you want at any stage of your career. Not sure we can afford to nurse a bloke through a full season with list sizes now.
