So, I've been thinking about trades recently. I figured, if anything, we need some quality defenders. Not knowing at all where to start I made a list of all defenders in the 'your teams trade bait' thread. I realise it'll be full of a whole lot of crap but at least it's realistic. It goes as follows...

Essendon
--------
Nathan Lovett-murray
Andrew Welsh
Malcolm Michael
Dean Dick
Danny Chartres

Port Adelaide
-------------
Toby Thurstans
Sean Dempster

Melbourne
---------
Christopher Johnson
Jade Bode
Nathan Carroll
Ben Holland

West Coast
----------
Jaymie Graham

Collingwood
-----------
Danny Stanley
Alan Toovey
Shannon Cox

Geelong
--------
Tom Longergan
David Johnson

Bulldogs
--------
Ryan Hardgrave

Richmond
--------
Jake King
Andrew Raines

St Kilda
--------
James Gwilt
Jason Blake
Leigh Fisher

North Melbourne
---------------
Shannon Watt

Does anyone interest us? Is there anyone not listed here, who may be worthwhile. If not, who's going to step up in the coming years? etc. etc.

Essendon
--------
Nathan Lovett-murray No better than Ladson or Guerra as a rebounding defender
Andrew Welsh seems to be used more by Knights as a tagging midfielder than a defender
Malcolm Michael no thanks. Past his best.
Dean Dick Don't know anything about him except what I read from Bombers supporters - and they say he's lazy. No thanks
Danny Chartres Don't know anything about him.

Port Adelaide
-------------
Toby Thurstans Hawthorn apparently was interested in him before we picked up Gilham. I don't think he is on our radar and in any event, I don't think Port would be prepared to trade him.
Sean Dempster Doesn't he play for St Kilda?

Melbourne
---------
Christopher Johnson not a key position defender
Jace Bode struggling to hold his spot in the worst team in the competition is no mean feat. No thanks
Nathan Carroll no better than what we have already. Isn't really a key defender.
Ben Holland washed up and will probably retire at the end of the season.

West Coast
----------
Jaymie Graham has never cemented a spot in the Eagles lineup and I doubt he's better than anything we already have.

Collingwood
-----------
Danny Stanley who?
Alan Toovey yeah nah
Shannon Cox no better than what we already have

Geelong
--------
Tom Lonergan I don't think the Cats would be keen to trade Lonergan at this stage. He seems to be doing well as a tall forward at the moment.
David Johnson no better than what we already have

Bulldogs
--------
Ryan Hargrave third tall defender in the mould of Danny Jacobs. As it's not what we need, no thanks

Richmond
--------
Jake King you must be joking
Andrew Raines not really a defender. Misused by Wallet.

St Kilda
--------
James Gwilt again, you must be joking
Jason Blake a player in the mould of Luke Brennan - tweener height and bad skills. Don't need him.
Leigh Fisher negative shut-down type player that isn't required at the Hawks

North Melbourne
---------------
Shannon Watt only if we could get him very very cheaply.

Comments on your prospects in bold. Thanks, zapproh, for taking the time to put together the list, but I don't think any of those would play a role at Hawthorn.

David Mundy may be a possibility - depending on whether the club considers that Birchall is at the stage where he could take on a key forward on a full-time basis and try to hurt that bloke going the other way. Mundy could then be used to fill Birchall's role.

We've seen the club make numerous attempts to trade for Bret Thornton, but I don't think that will be resurrected this season.

I really think that we'll be looking to the draft to fill that need.

Rumour has it we will make a big play for Chaplin from Port.

Will need to be a huge play.
Anyone know when he comes out of contract? Hopefully he's home sick :thumbsu:

Another player is Westcoasts jaymie graham. 196, 95kgs 25 yo.
They were singing his praises in 06 but had a horror run with injuries last year. His back playing but not rated anymore?

I would like to get Nathan Brown unfortunately not enough to give up what it would take to get him from Collingwood. They would not want to trade him unless we offered a class midfielder and even then.

Mitch Brown from West Coast Eagles and brother of Nathan Brown from Collingwood is a really good choice, 195cm 20 years old will be a great defender

A Victorian boy. Looked before before his injuries.
West Coast were playing him as a forward but if his twin brother can hold down CHB there is always a chance Mitch can do it also.

If Willo wanted out, a swap for Brown could suit all parties...??

ANOTHER port pillaging.

Guerra
Dew
Gilham
Hardwick
Clarko

We've done alright out of port. How about we get danyle pearce when crawf retires?

Can't say I've watched Chaplin closely enough to comment on him. How about we just grab the first guy that can beat Buddy in 1-on-1 contests.

Required a knee reconstruction at the start of the season so you question whether he'll be the same player after the reco than he was before.

In any event, I think the Eagles see Mitch more as a key forward than as a defender.

True, You would have to give us like Hodge or Mitchell for him and that won't happen.

Plus you had your chance in the 2006 Draft for Brown

hawthorn should make a big play for paddy ryder.
he is a gun.
just what we need.
gillham struggles on the opposition's second forward consistently, let alone the first when croad is out.

Bit early to be thinking trades isn't it? I would hate too see big money spent on securing a key defender from another club before the ones in our reserves have been given a proper crack. Especially since I would think there are a fair few players on our list in line for a pay hike in their next contracts.

How about James Frawley or Colin Garland from Melbourne. With Rivers back next year, one of their young CHB's will miss out. Straigh swap with Dowler. Melbourne need a forward we need a back.

Mitch Thorp for Nathan Brown?

2010,did a contract this year.

Mitch Thorp for Nathan Brown?

I don't think that would happen.

Nathan is proven at AFL level. Mitch has immense talent but is constantly injured and doesn't have a track record at the AFL level. As such, I don't think Collingwood would let him go unless we gave first round pick + Mitch I believe.

Sometimes I think we overrate our young talent and just assume every other club would trade away for it.
