i was glad to hear the promo this arvo - they mentioned during the hottest 100 in january that they'd be doing an 'all time' in june, but i assumed it must've been forgotten about when i heard nothing.

any announcement on when it'll be broadcast? i thought it'd probably be the sunday of the long weekend (7 june) but voting doesn't open til june 1...

i just hope this 100 isn't ruined by recent crap that will age poorly... i've got a horrible feeling that sex on fire will go top 10 :(

other than that, i expect proof of the decision to not have done one of these in 11 year... because after all this time, number 1 will still be smells like teen spirit, throw your arms around me will still be up that (no complaints about that), and hopefully love will tear us apart will make a return to the top 10.

songs of the past 11 years that have held up well that might get a run?

knights of cydonia (muse) for the top half

my people (the presets) will go well, with a national tour helping them.

these days (powderfinger) will have held up pretty well i think - top 30 i reckon

the hard road (hilltop hoods) will go well, despite not being in the hoods top 5 songs

7 nation army and my doorbell (white stripes) will both feature

woman and joker and the thief (wolfmother) will both go well.

are you gunna be my girl (jet) will be there somewhere.

other than that... well as i say, proof that there's no need to have these often. i can't see too much from the past 11 years that's an all time great song - especially when people get caught up in the nostalgia of songs like stairway to heaven that's been played on jjj once in the last 17 years...

edit: i was also going to say... i don't see as much danger of nova listeners hijacking the countdown as the do every australia day. maybe this is a much better opportunity to get a group together and all vote for a random awesome song to make it into the 90s.

my guess is that we'll have 100,000 people vote for "love will tear us apart" and "throw your arms around me" thinking it's funny and we'll end up with the same list as when they first did this poll

nb. i do really like "love will tear us apart" and it probably would be in my top 10

im assuming you get 10 votes?
Frenzal Rhomb - Kaan Kaant(actually maybe a song that gets played on radio every now and again)
Bad Religion - Generator
NOFX - sticken in my eye
Dropkick Murphys - Barroom Hero
The Living End - Second Solution
TISM - Greg! The Stop Sign
The Descendents - Myage
Dead Kennedys - Lets Lynch the Landlord
Madness - Baggy Trousers
The Beatles - A Day in the Life

it's really hard to pick a top 10!

for me though, it's likely to include a few of these (including a few which i know won't make it, but i'll be encouraging all my friends to get on!)

jeff buckley - grace
radiohead - karma police
white stripes - 7 nation army
the drones - sharkfin blues
you am i - berlin chair
gomez - see the world
metallica - one
frente - bizarre love triangle
tool - stinkfist

9. Hunters and Collectors - throw you arms around me
8. The cure - love cats
7. AC/DC - it's a long way to the top
6. Silverchair - straight lines
5. Muse - Supermassive black hole
4. Hilltop Hoods - The sentinel (my smokey)
3. Radiohead - paranoid android
2. Joy Division - Love will tear us apart
1. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Just to clear something up, are they doing a hottest 100 for songs from the beginning of time, or just from previous Hottest 100 lists. ie the Hottest 100 from the 19 odd years they've been doing it? I think the latter would be more intersting as it marks the period of time when the popularity of popular music has declined.

My understanding is you can only vote on songs that have been in the Hottest 100, otherwise it's the same as Triple M etc.

Opened today, super tough cutting the list down to just 10 songs. Using my itunes/ipod most played list was pretty tough considering I've only had my ipod for one and a half years so a lot of the songs that featured highly were just songs I was into recently.

First 8 for me were pretty much locks from when I found out an all-time list was happening:

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows
The Living End - Prisoner Of Society
Violent Femmes - Blister In The Sun
Oasis - Wonderwall
Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

Next two were a little harder but I ended up with:

Powderfinger - My Happiness
Coldplay - The Scientist

Honourable mentions to RATM (Killing in the name of), Cold War Kids (Hospital Beds), Snow Patrol (Chasing Cars), RHCP (Under the Bridge) and many others.

Picked Seven Nation Army as my #1 song.

My tip for the winner has to be Smells like Teen Spirit, although I get the feeling a more recent song may take it out.

dammit! this is TOO HARD!

i was really, really fussy to begin with... and still ended up with 45 songs. culled to 25, and now i can officially cull no more...

The Drones - Shark Fin Blues
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Gomez - See The World
Gomez - How We Operate
Regina Spektor - Samson
The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You
Radiohead - Karma Police
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Frente! - Bizarre Love Triangle
Kermit the Frog - Rainbow Connection
Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me
Paul Kelly - Deeper Water
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Into My Arms
Hilltop Hoods - Nosebleed Section
Everclear - Amphetamine

Crowded House - Distant Sun
Coldplay - Fix You
Oasis - Wonderwall
Green Day - Good Riddance (time Of Your Life)
Midnight Oil - Forgotten Years
Coldplay - A Message
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Powderfinger - Bless My Soul
The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Crowded House - Locked Out

Got down to a list of 20 before reaching these ones. Doubt most will make it, but oh well.

Top 5 will consist of

Greenday - Good riddance
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit
Oasis - Wonderwall
Jeff Buckley - hallelujah
A silverchair or powderfinger song, my tip either "my happiness" or "tomorrow"
